Remove or at least turn off Game Center

I can't stand it that I HAVE to have Game Center. It's absolutely frustrating that I cannot completely disable it. I do not care what my score is compared to anyone, and if don't log in, I end up having to wait for it to load just so I can click cancel. Absolutely ridiculous. Poor setup, poor customer service with this issue. Allow full user controls on this. Why force a user to have to use an app? Not acceptable.

With my angry birds, I decline hte terms, then cancel the sign in three times and I'm given the pop up to disable Game Center. Which i then say 'yes, please'.....problem is next time the game starts I have to go through it all over again. Game Center refuses to accept that I don't want it and refuses to respect my 'no thanks'. Definitely a glitch or deliberate set of programming with iOS6.

Next time I'm going to try signing in to see if there is a permanent opt out for it. I love playing angry birds but I'm honestly to the point of never playing it if I have to go through the three times opt out gig. I've tried to communicate with Rovio, but I haven't gotten anything beyond form mails.

So, all in all, Game Center seems to be something hard to opt out of with iOS6 - unless someone knows some other way.

With iOS 5.1, it would not popup and ask for login credentials, nor welcome me back if I was logged in. After upgrading to iOS 6, it immediately started popping up. I did the logout and multiple cancels to get the stop asking dialog, but even selecting "don't harass me anymore" only works for a short time.

How do you delete your Game Center account?

If logged into game center, why doesn't turning off notifications work?

Arrogance is much too weak of a word to describe this.

I never had a Game Center account and still it harasses me. I tried logging in to see if i can then opt out and there is no option to opt out. The only options you are given is to sign up and see what games 'all your friends' are playing.

My only experience is iwth angry birds and bejeweled, I bought those before i started looking only for non-game center games, but with these anyway it seems Game Center popups are mandatory if you want to play the game. Opting out just gets you a temporary respite from the popups, they come back as soon as the game restarts. ANd for me with an ipad 2, the extra demands placed upon my device by iOS6 means that many of my apps are constantly restarting because the OS is using so much of the system resources that background operations have to shut down. Meaning, for me, if I play angry birds I have to deal iwth the popup on a 'several times a day' basis.

I contacted the company that makes a couple of the games, and the NYT. They say the game center is an Apple thing.

I tried to contact Apple, and was told to go the Apple store and talk to a "genius". They didn't have a clue how to disable game center, and insuated the problem is the fault of the application developers. I asked for a number that I could contact to get an answer ("please give me a manager's e-mail address or phone number), and was given a phone number. The 800 number goes to some voice prompt mechanism that does not allow you to speak to a human.

Frustrating.

My daughter's iPhone 4s had the issue where the power button no longer works (it gets stuck). Find out on a Monday, make an appointment for Saturday, go to store and they say "yeah, it's got a problem but your one year warranty expired a few days ago". I tell them I couldn't make it in until Saturday, but it doesn't matter because "the system" won't allow them to take it in under warranty. I'm given the option of paying $200 to have it fixed. The frickin' phone costs less than that to produce! The switch is defective - you can search on it and find that a lot of people have this issue - and it's also a $1.49 part. Amazing.

I've never purchased an iPhone on contract, and a rue the day I did as Apple's support has really waned. That's what happens when a company gets too big for it's britches and starts believing that it's infallable. Oh well, profits are up.

Anyway, as I stated earlier, it appears that if you're not logged into Game Center, and you log into iTunes, that will automatically log you into Game Center. Seems pretty obvious, I guess.

Apple doen't read here. Your comments are best directed http://www.apple.com/feedback/

It does appear that Game Center being so 'pushy' is something that came with one of the iOS6 updates (prior to that you could totally disable it in the setting, you can't do that anymore)

Perhaps if enough people voice their opinions that option may return....that or users stop using Game Center games and only use ones that do not use that interface. I know I've stopped playing angry birds because it annoys me to spend 5 minutes every day disabling an application I don't want on in the first place.

However I do also think that the game developer has some control over it. My bejeweled is a Game Center game. I've disabled it through the game and it's remained disabled. Same with another game. So being signed in is inconsistently applied, suggesting that some game developers have a degree of control over how pushy game center is.

My biggest concern has been, if individual games are logging me in, then they're accessing my apple ID password, which means they have access to my Apple account, and if I had a credit card attached to my account, they have access to that. They also have access to who I am, where I live and other personal info. Info I don't want to share. If I wanted to share it, I already would have.

Solution for game center:

1. sign out of game center.

2. Close app.

3. Turn off both wifi and 3g.

4. Turn off all game center notifications.

5. Double click the home button to bring up the app task bar.

6. Press and hold on an app until an x appears.

7. Click x to remove app from app task bar.

8. Remove every game (including game center) from the app task bar.

9. Go back into the game you were playing.

10. Do not turn on wifi or 3g when your running a game.

Sign out of GC.

Start game.

You will be prompted to login to GC. Select cancel.

Exit and restart game, and when GC prompt appears again, select cancel.

Do this again one more time.

After the third time, GC will prompt you if you want to disable it. Select yes.

GC will no longer prompt you when you start your game. This always works. I've confirmed it, as have others.

But there is one problem. If you sign into the App Store or iTunes, that will automatically sign you into GC. For example, if you go to the App Store and install a new app, the App Store will prompt you for your login ID and password. Entering that information will also automatically log you back into GC. Yes, it's brain dead, but this illogical and unwanted behaviour doesn't surprise me given how anal Apple is.

Game center also does not remain disabled. I've found that with Angry Birds seasons at least, every time the game reboots, you are again prompted to sign into Game Center. Cancel three times to disable it and it does disable, until the game restarts again. Then you have to go through it all over again.

I have also removed that game from the game center account, but it continually reassociates itself. Basically it refuses to take no for an answer.

I think my biggest concern is what else is Rovio accessing(the makers of Angry Birds)? They get my password to my Apple ID no matter what I do, which means they theoretically have access to my iTunes account and any payment associated with that. They've apparently found a way out of the sandbox and what else can they access?

BeJeweled seems to remain disabled. Another game that I have that's a game center game is geared towards kids so I think they have or maintain a higher privacy standard. It too remains disassociated and signed out. Only Angry Birds seasons continues to force itself upon me.

The only thing that's kept me from deleting angry birds is if they ever fix it I would lose two years of progress. Although due to this, I'm barely playing it so it's getting to the 'no big loss' point.

I don't want to social game. I especially don't want to let my 6 year old niece social game. This just seems like a major privacy issue and the only comments I get back from Apple or Rovio are silence or canned responses.

This was posted in another thread, and it works.

Log out of GC.

Create a bogus GC account - one you don't care about, and one that isn't the same as you use for your Apple ID for the App Store or Itunes Store.

Log into bogus account

Log out of bogus account. GC will think this is the account you use for GC.

Start up your game and when asked to login to GC, press cancel. Do this sequence three times.

After third time, GC will ask if you want to disable it. Select yes.

Voila. As long as you don't log into the bogus account, GC will remain disabled. You can login to App Store or Itunes store with your regular account and download/install apps and songs and no longer have issues with GC. GC will ignore this account and will always associate the bogus account (which you will never use) with it.

Everytime I think I've disabled Game Center it pops back on if I make a music or app purchase. This is a serious flaw in the OS. Apple should be ashamed. Absolutely invasive and more than annoying. I DO NOT WANT TO USE GAME CENTER. This issue, unfortunately will be ignored by Apple. Are you listening Apple? No? Thought not. ********.

Apr 25, 2013 4:16 AM in response to peledog

That solution above does work. I've done it. No, you can't turn GC off, but you do anonymize it. So if the reason it won't turn off is data mining (likely in hte hope of spamming you with game recommendations) then at least it's mining false data.

I just won't spread it around or promote it because I fear, if the data mining is deliberate, the hole will be plugged. That code will be incorproated into the system to defeat this. (I guess if that happens it can confirm the suspicion that GC is nothing more than a data mining tool)

I've also noticed that it's not all games. Some respect your privacy (especially ones geared towards kids), while others are almost belligerant in forcing GC on you.

Apple is not here on this forum. If you want to let them know what you think about game center, use the contact us link below and send them some feedback. I've also let game developers know just how much i 'adore' their practices.
