I guess that as Apple has told the world about FCP 10 then (basic) questions can be asked....

1) Do you still need to (officially) transcode into Quicktime? or will it handle say DVCPro HD natively?
2) Is there upgrade pricing or does everyone pay $299 regardless
3) A video I saw had the presenter refer to FCP 10... if I'm using the latest which is 7 where did 8 & 9 go?
Cheers

Out of curiosity, given it seems we are in the same boat, are you looking into alternatives (Premiere, Avid) or going to continue to cut on FCP7 for at least the foreseeable future?

We've learned a very old but important lesson out of this... don't put all your eggs in one basket. We (like many others) had a suspicion that Apple's focus was navigating away from the pro-app market share, as they were behind the curve on tech advancements in FCS apps. Even simple things like native AVCHD.

Sorry, to specifically answer your question, we purchased CS5 Production Prem. when it came out and began the learning and start-up curve, which was quite easy. CS5 was still kind of "clunky" to work with, but CS5.5 came with many improvements, and it's cheaper than Avid. Premier and FCP7 have many similarities that make the transition quite easy. Also, their support discussions site is actively monitored by knowledgable employees who have always been among those who have answered every one of my posts, which have been few. AND Adobe is now offering 50% off to switchers. We are still running FCS3 but only for migration purposes. We believe it is better to go thru any transitional pains now, rather than wait, as the pain will only be worse. All new projects are Prod. Prem. until and if we get some positive indication from Apple. And if we are wrong about Apple's seemingly apparent direction with regard to their pro market customers, we'll gladly purchase the trio, al'a carte for $400. Worse case for us now... if Apple comes back to the table.... we'll have two powerful NLE suites, which will only increase our diversity, agility, and ability to meet a wider array of client needs. If Apple continues on it's current course, we'll look at Avid or some other NLE, in addition to Adobe's suite.

Thanks for the input. I think we're feeling the same way here. We have Production CS5 - though admittedly, Premiere is the tool we use least out of it - but we've heard a lot of good things about CS5.5 and Premiere specifically. We saw the same signs you did about Apple's focus - but perhaps were a little too optimistic and trusting in Apple that they would put out a good FCP Product. Fortunately we've also invested in Adobe so a switch at this point would not be too difficult, time-consuming or costly.

Crack on with it then chaps. I can't wait to see what Apples responce will be. I bet they'll lose soooooo much sleep over this. 😁

Don't worry chaps Lions on its way to save you all... 😁 😁 😁

Why apple didn't make the option, in fcpx, to export a clip of a sequence to a motion project ? Like in fcp7 !!!! It's stupid...

For exemple, if I need to make a tracking from a clip in my timeline to add tracking text. The only way I can do it with FCPX is exporting the clip individuallly and re-import it in my project : a waste of time !

Apple really need to work on FCPX !

Bullocks-Chops, you're awake. I was beginning to think we lost you, Mate!

Apple's already given their response. I'm over it already. And I certainly am under no illusion that they are loosing sleep over it. I could still kick myself in the bum for not buying their stock when it dropped to $84/share in the last market crash.... arrrgggg, could have tripled my dosh.

Hey, I wanted to ask you... If memory serves me correctly, you were testing Lion... if so, many are wondering if FCS3 will INSTALL on Lion. Yes, yes, we know it is purported to run, but if one had to do a clean install, could FCS3 then be installed on Lion???? Also, have you run CS5.5 on it?

Ta,

J.

It IS stupid. But perhaps we were all under the impression that the "PRO" in many of Apple's products stood for PROfessional - well actually it stood for PROfit.

Yeah, I'm sure if I went back and reviewed some quotes from Apple @ NAB when they did their pre-release presentation, we'd find massive, intentional deception.

MacBookPro3,1 here, and after 3 free logic boards from Apple to fix Nvidia fiasco, still running strong after 3 years of service (w/Lion+FCPX) and one drop onto hard concrete with ice water poured over it to boot. It's a monster.

3 LOGIC BOARDS!!! I have a 4,1 and a 6,1. The 4,1 just had to have the LB replaced two weeks ago at the local Apple Store (for free) for the same reason... Are they putting in the same defective LB's with bad NVIDIA chips???? Why did your's have to be replaced 3 times????

Oh, and thanks for the tip on FCS3 install on Lion, Have you actually done it???? The problem installing w/ FCS2 on Lion is due to the installer relying on Rosetta, which FCS3 does not, correct? I believe you were one of the people I remember that was beta-testing Lion.
