Out of curiosity, given it seems we are in the same boat, are you looking into alternatives (Premiere, Avid) or going to continue to cut on FCP7 for at least the foreseeable future?
We've learned a very old but important lesson out of this... don't put all your eggs in one basket. We (like many others) had a suspicion that Apple's focus was navigating away from the pro-app market share, as they were behind the curve on tech advancements in FCS apps. Even simple things like native AVCHD.
Sorry, to specifically answer your question, we purchased CS5 Production Prem. when it came out and began the learning and start-up curve, which was quite easy. CS5 was still kind of "clunky" to work with, but CS5.5 came with many improvements, and it's cheaper than Avid. Premier and FCP7 have many similarities that make the transition quite easy. Also, their support discussions site is actively monitored by knowledgable employees who have always been among those who have answered every one of my posts, which have been few. AND Adobe is now offering 50% off to switchers. We are still running FCS3 but only for migration purposes. We believe it is better to go thru any transitional pains now, rather than wait, as the pain will only be worse. All new projects are Prod. Prem. until and if we get some positive indication from Apple. And if we are wrong about Apple's seemingly apparent direction with regard to their pro market customers, we'll gladly purchase the trio, al'a carte for $400. Worse case for us now... if Apple comes back to the table.... we'll have two powerful NLE suites, which will only increase our diversity, agility, and ability to meet a wider array of client needs. If Apple continues on it's current course, we'll look at Avid or some other NLE, in addition to Adobe's suite.
