Not that anyone cares at all, but since I don't have my own blog, I'll bore you all with my thoughts on FCP X:
*In Defense of the New:*
I have to admit, I'm kind of surprised at those who think the price is high. My first thought was, wow, that's actually too low. If they make it too low, it will seem "cheap". My guess is that they want to blow Premiere right off the Mac for good and they are pricing it accordingly.
I also don't agree with the notion that any of the good things from iMovie are bad for FC. iMovie has some very good things. No reason not to make a professional's life easier too. As was mentioned before, you still have to do the creative part yourself. You still have to put your fingerprints on the edit. Sounds like it's all optional anyway, so I don't get the fuss. As a professional myself, I just don't agree with this notion that a feature from a non-professional app somehow dumbs down the professional app.
*The Good:*
Native AVCHD and h.264 editing. I will reward Apple by buying a shiny new multi-core Mac just for that alone. I am so sick and tired of transcoding my source to ProRes. This feature is worth the price of admission. I was an inch away from switching to Premiere for this reason.
The "auto" stuff sounds great to me. Anything that saves me time on the technical stuff so I can focus on the creative stuff is a winner. If you don't like the result, either turn it off or fix it. You can only come out ahead.
I've always been on the same page with Apple's philosophy of moving forward even if it means risking alienation from some people. I love that they scrapped everything and started over. I've been waiting patiently for all this "Core" stuff and 64-bit stuff and Cocoa stuff to mature and it looks like we're finally getting there. We'll find out if Apple's big talk over the last few years is for realz.
*The Bad:*
Actually, I can't think of anything that seems flat out "bad" to me from what I know so far. I'm sure there will be some things when all the details come out. I'm a bit concerned that FCPX may not be able to open legacy files. I hope I'm wrong on that because I don't want to have to edit in two versions.
*The Weird:*
People keep talking about this app being in Alpha stage and that it's come a long way since the recent private preview. ***? How can an app that's presumably been in development for two years and is a month and a half away from release be in any other mode than bug fixes? From Larry Jordan's blog— "the application has moved significantly forward since that time [private preview in February]." Really?
*The Unknown:*
I want more info on handling things like photos for basic motion graphics. Previous FC's handling of keyframes for such things was horrible. I would LOVE to be able to select a bin of photos and tell FCPX to "do something nice with these". I'm SO tired of manually keyframing images for pan and scans and such.
Is there finally an easy way to see which of my Bin clips are currently being used in a timeline without having to resort to a search? I just want a stinking red dot or something on my bin clips to say "Yes, I am being used somewhere". I've been asking for this for ten years.
Font management. For the love of Christmas, can we please get FCX to alert us for missing fonts or at least remember what fonts were used?
Please tell me I can finally have my video in FCP look like my video in Quicktime and everywhere else on my Mac. Hopefully colorsync will fix all that.
What about priority rendering of a given section?
Auto-ducking?
*The Verdict:*
I can't wait for FCP X. I am all over this. The native AVCHD editing alone is 90% of my need right now. For me it's going to come down to performance. I want everything I do in FCPX to be instant and responsive. I understand there will still be rendering, I just want to feel productive throughout the process. FCPX seems to have that handled.
For me personally, FCPX sounds great. I don't care about Bluray. I don't even care about DVD authoring. My stuff is going to the web these days. It looks really geared toward my style, so I'm counting down the days!
