I guess that as Apple has told the world about FCP 10 then (basic) questions can be asked....

1) Do you still need to (officially) transcode into Quicktime? or will it handle say DVCPro HD natively?
2) Is there upgrade pricing or does everyone pay $299 regardless
3) A video I saw had the presenter refer to FCP 10... if I'm using the latest which is 7 where did 8 & 9 go?
Cheers

Really? That's why he hired an editor?

BTW - I'm not against this FCPX software.

Among other reasons. One is he enjoy cooking large meals, and didn't have the time to cook, spend time with his family, and edit. Another is health related (mostly later in his life). Also in his early years, before he became a director, he made title cards and did some editing so he had the skills if he want to do it himself. He also quickly started work on another film as soon as the previous one was shot, and he wouldn't have the time to do that if he edited his own films. I just used him as an example.

As to the complaints, the reason I don't like the is because Apple might say "well gee, if people really feel that way, maybe we should rise the price" — and I don't want that. I wish people could just accept the $300 price tag and move on.

I've been laying low, sort of avoiding ye ol' FCP forum here for a while. And this thread sums up EXACTLY why. Too much whining...

1.) For years people have been complaining about the need for a FCP overhaul. Especially the "interface". Then, as would be expected, as soon as it happens, everyone starts complaining. To me the interface looks like a combo. between Motion/STP/iMovie. In other words: completely expected. If you're disappointed enough—shop elsewhere. Can't win for losing around here, it seems.

2.) Price. If you're belly-aching over the price—STOP! It's dirt cheap. If you disagree maybe it's time to go jump onto Premiere Pro CS 5.5. Oops! It's $800 MSRP. Or maybe you be looking at AVID. (Disregarding the New cross-grade from FCP) it's $2,500. Oops again. So, $300? Yes! CHEAP!

3.) Too much "auto-everything"? A.) You can turn it off—it's ALL non-destructive. B.) It doesn't auto-EDIT!! If your "grandma" gets more editing gigs it's probably because she's a better editor AND people like working with her. Not because her hammer said "Black and Decker" on it, instead of Stanley. Get it? There is no magical editing robot. Too, one person can't do every single edit job in the world. So if you're "competitor" gets the new-all-auto-editing FCPX, and you do too...what's separating you two? Yeah, the same things that were separating you before... Heaven forbid that you can't come up with that $300 though. How will we EVER survive???

This ever present "the-sky-is-falling" attitude around here is exhausting!

I'm going to slide back into my hole now and pull the rock over the entrance again... see you in a few months.

As an assistant, I'm worried about this "No tracks" idea..

How do I prep my layers for online? How about an OMF?

Is anyone beta testing? If so, can you guys tell me if their is an option to open everything back up onto layers (if any) to prep for other companies?

Feels like this is more for people who shoot, edit, and post stuff on youtube......but I guess I'll see when it comes out.

You forgot to mention that not only is Granny a better editor but she makes better cookies too. Everyone loves them.

Don't do that, tis about to get funnier around here. It's amazing how loud the whining and the gnashing of teeth is after only 1 day after a demo.

64 bit vs 32 bit is just bull ** marketing unless there are other real serious changes. People need to find an oxygen bottle, stop drinking the kool-aid and get a grip.

Well I don't know about you, but I hate having to wait a really long time to render and export a video. And I hate that I have 8 cores, but it only shows 2 max being used.

If you download and install MenuMeters, it will show you which cores are being used on your machine at any given moment.

Not that anyone cares at all, but since I don't have my own blog, I'll bore you all with my thoughts on FCP X:

*In Defense of the New:*
I have to admit, I'm kind of surprised at those who think the price is high. My first thought was, wow, that's actually too low. If they make it too low, it will seem "cheap". My guess is that they want to blow Premiere right off the Mac for good and they are pricing it accordingly.

I also don't agree with the notion that any of the good things from iMovie are bad for FC. iMovie has some very good things. No reason not to make a professional's life easier too. As was mentioned before, you still have to do the creative part yourself. You still have to put your fingerprints on the edit. Sounds like it's all optional anyway, so I don't get the fuss. As a professional myself, I just don't agree with this notion that a feature from a non-professional app somehow dumbs down the professional app.

*The Good:*
Native AVCHD and h.264 editing. I will reward Apple by buying a shiny new multi-core Mac just for that alone. I am so sick and tired of transcoding my source to ProRes. This feature is worth the price of admission. I was an inch away from switching to Premiere for this reason.

The "auto" stuff sounds great to me. Anything that saves me time on the technical stuff so I can focus on the creative stuff is a winner. If you don't like the result, either turn it off or fix it. You can only come out ahead.

I've always been on the same page with Apple's philosophy of moving forward even if it means risking alienation from some people. I love that they scrapped everything and started over. I've been waiting patiently for all this "Core" stuff and 64-bit stuff and Cocoa stuff to mature and it looks like we're finally getting there. We'll find out if Apple's big talk over the last few years is for realz.

*The Bad:*
Actually, I can't think of anything that seems flat out "bad" to me from what I know so far. I'm sure there will be some things when all the details come out. I'm a bit concerned that FCPX may not be able to open legacy files. I hope I'm wrong on that because I don't want to have to edit in two versions.

*The Weird:*
People keep talking about this app being in Alpha stage and that it's come a long way since the recent private preview. ***? How can an app that's presumably been in development for two years and is a month and a half away from release be in any other mode than bug fixes? From Larry Jordan's blog— "the application has moved significantly forward since that time [private preview in February]." Really?

*The Unknown:*
I want more info on handling things like photos for basic motion graphics. Previous FC's handling of keyframes for such things was horrible. I would LOVE to be able to select a bin of photos and tell FCPX to "do something nice with these". I'm SO tired of manually keyframing images for pan and scans and such.

Is there finally an easy way to see which of my Bin clips are currently being used in a timeline without having to resort to a search? I just want a stinking red dot or something on my bin clips to say "Yes, I am being used somewhere". I've been asking for this for ten years.

Font management. For the love of Christmas, can we please get FCX to alert us for missing fonts or at least remember what fonts were used?

Please tell me I can finally have my video in FCP look like my video in Quicktime and everywhere else on my Mac. Hopefully colorsync will fix all that.

What about priority rendering of a given section?

Auto-ducking?

*The Verdict:*
I can't wait for FCP X. I am all over this. The native AVCHD editing alone is 90% of my need right now. For me it's going to come down to performance. I want everything I do in FCPX to be instant and responsive. I understand there will still be rendering, I just want to feel productive throughout the process. FCPX seems to have that handled.

For me personally, FCPX sounds great. I don't care about Bluray. I don't even care about DVD authoring. My stuff is going to the web these days. It looks really geared toward my style, so I'm counting down the days!
