Motorola RAZR v3i does not sync properly with Address Book!

I have bought the RAZR v3i yesterday, the bluetooth pairing is fine. (which the last version RAZR v3 cannot do, you can only use USB cable)

But the horror comes when you try to sync the phone with your Address book through iSync.

After the sync, your phone's directory will receive partial information from your address book (say you have 150 names, you might get 100), but the worst is the 'name' entry in your phone, you will see a long bunch of alpha numeric characters in the name entry. Basically your directory is filled with gabbage, the phone number for each entry is right, but the names are all wrong.

You properly end up typing the name back to your phone using the numeric keypad. But DON'T re-iSync those update back into your computer, you will LOSE both your phone's directory as well as your Address book database after the sync.

I have spend hours to fix the problem, I guess because Motorola has changed their phone directory mapping (they have add more entries in their phone directory), nothing will work with your Address book.

I cannot simply believe these 2 companies have such close relationship in developing ROKR and fail to have their phone to work with the Address book in a Mac... besides Motorola's phone directory is really really low grade... not very professionally developed... maybe Apple should help them to re-design the whole operating system in their phone rather then just sell them the iTune software.

I have decided to refund my purchase.... until Motorola help to fix this problem, I will stick with my old RAZR which works perfectly with my iSync and my Address book.

Welcome to Apple Discussions.

Locate and launch iSync - by default, it is in your Applications folder. Select iSync Help from the Help menu, then choose Browse iSync Help.

Under Contents in the left column, select Setting up your devices, then on the next page, select Setting up to sync your Bluetooth mobile phone.

The instructions which are displayed will walk you through the basic configuration steps needed to pair, confirm and synchronize your Motorola RAZR V3i.

I would like to post some updates...

I have confirmed with the Motorola Shop in Hong Kong (they have their office here), their technician told me the newest RAZR v3i (not the old V3) is not compatible with iSync. It will cause unexpected problem like erasing both directories on the phone as well as the Address book when you do the sync. The Address has problem transfering the information to the phone and likely all the names is missing.

I have refunded my v3i and I will not buy it until the iSync works with this new phone. I have over 200 numbers in my phone, I can't imagine I have to retype them all into my new phone and you cannot back it up afterwards.

Good Luck to everyone!

I do not believe the V3i is available to update the current versions of the phone. I believe there is also hardward difference between the two since the V3i also support non-name tagging voice dailing which is the feature I really want verse having to put a name tag with each name I want to voice dail.

Also, someone say that bluetooth pairing does not work with the V3, well that is interesting since it works for me and I have synce my contacts and even ical evens with it. Grant it was hard getting it working but once it did it worked fine.

One other thing I found out the hardway, do not create voice tags for contacts until you done the sync. once you have the sync set up and working go in can create the tags then everything should work going forward.

Also, keep in mind even though apple and moto worked together on the ROKR does not mean moto tells apple they are coming out with a new RAZR, I doubt Apple require moto to tell them about new itune products like the V3i. The phone only came out 2 months ago and there has not been an isync update yet I assume there will be on this week possible with new product announcements. Plus it sounds like moto broke it.

I just bought my V3i yesterday and found the same problem with the address book. So much for me thinking that losing my previous phone wasn't going to be to much of a drama!

Anyways, I just wanted to confirm that if you indeed do have the same problem which I suspect that everyone will have seeings though it seems to be a known issue to moto, that the 'send vcard' option in the address book does work. I know it's slow and tedious but tell you what it forced me to cull a bunch of people I don't talk to any more out of my phone. Nothing like a bit of early spring cleaning.

So if you do want to keep the phone rather than refunding it I would suggest that you follow the process above, it works fine. In the mean time I am sure this week will bring a whole heap of new updates for the OS and that it'll all be sorted out pretty sharpish.

I agree using vCard should solve the problem, well clean out those useless number is another good idea... however as you use this phone and start to add new numbers to the phone directory, you will not able to back it up in one sync action, you have to look up what you have added and manually type it back to your Address Book... (because the sync will destroy both side of the directory)

All we hope for is Apple and Moto will resolve this stupid problem asap... so we can back up everything like the old RAZR v3, completely problem free...

Thanks for yor suggestion, I have refund my unit, but I have my eye on the new v3x, the 3G version of the RAZR, I have seen the model showing here, its very very nice... hope they fixed the sync function for v3x as well as the v3i....

The Vcard send has forced me to clean everything up which is a good thing and now i am just hoping that apple can fix it all before i add to many numbers to the phone with out a back up and get drunk and loose it again ha! Could be a costly gamble!

I did have a look at the v3x too but i am still not a fan of 3g, the batteries and functions are really not good enough yet although the phones are good cos of their fast processers but then again each to their own.
