I have asked this before under the previous Support system and was told that it was not possible. These accounts were lifetime things. Maybe this will change with the new format? I'd like to change mine, too.

Hi,

It may be a simple request.

However Apple have deemed that they will not allow a change of the Posting ID/Alias.

The issue arises as at some points Apple have changed some people's Aliases.

There were more around the time the last change to the Software used to run the Discussion was changed but these have dramatically dropped off (not that there were that many to start with).

It seems that any changes now fall under some extreme category of perceived need.

Realistically it is not going to happen.

As RandomAppleID has said it is easier to move on and Create new ID.

I'm subscribed to MSDN and for that I use my Windows Live email address/login. I changed it to something else today without any problems. (I wanted to align my email address with my new user name I've chosen). Windows advised it may take a couple of days for all the changes to take place (presumably to propagate through all their connected systems). GitHub allows it too. I wonder if Apple are using a GUID/UUID in their database behind the usernames anyway? I'd really love to be able to change my Apple ID. I really dislike mine. 😢

The chances are the Hosts are leaving it unarchived just so people can post here (one place for all).

HI,

In the past the @mac.com registration page stayed open whilst Apple used MobileMe for the then paid for accounts.

They were advertised as "iChat Names".

As part of the registration Process you had to list another email.

Effectively the two become Hard-linked and you could not use that email again to register another name.

However it is possible to remove this alternative Email and either create another Apple ID with it or use it to Verify another email/Apple ID that you no longer have access to.

HI heatherfrombraodbeach,

It has never been about the money.

It is and was about blocking people from abusing the system.

The Current Software allows the Original Poster to award 2 Helpfuls and a Correct answer as the maximum number of awards.

Helpfuls are worth 5 points and Corrects are worth 10.

In previous version of the software used to run the Boards people got a point for just posting and could "vote" a reply with positive and negative points. (it was limited to a certain number per day)

It was easier to create multiple Apple IDs just to game the system.

The whole voting process became so fraught with personal attacks that new software was found and a new process in making an Apple ID was employed.

Jive (http://www.jivesoftware.com/) have provided the last two version of the software used (Mainly as they are the only people writing software that can deal with the amount The Apple Support Communities deal with).

Although Apple have changed many things to make it look more "Apple like" the basic Structure is the same as some other high volume social sites that use the same software.

On many of these you cannot change the name you create when you login for the first time.

Hi Ralph,

I don't know the history to this so I'll accept what you say as true.

However, I think all that is being asked is the ability to change a users display name - once. Because loads of people just accept the auto generated name - or make a typos when they create their display name. Most don't realize that once created it can never be changed. If the ability to change the display name was limited to ONCE, then I don't see how it could lead to people trying to rort the system. So just one change of display name to correct any error - or just to have a more appropriate moniker seems a reasonable ask to me.

Anyway, I will stay tuned.

HI,

As this Thread has been running since April 2011 I doubt much will be done.

Scattered over the various Communities you will find similar threads that seem to serve no purpose other than to gather more posts saying the a same thing.

They do tend to server two purposes:-

1) Keeping all similar posts in one place (They could be reviewed but as this threads shows rarely does anything happen)

2) It stops the Communities being littered with similar threads.

As I have said in this tread before, before this Thread was started it was not a regular thing but Hosts would change the name in some cases.

In some cases that has been about harassment where someone has been posting under a name across several Help sites and have been subjected to negative followers posting to their threads any time they post. The Apple Discussions Communities can be searched by Google and other Search engines.

Apple did tell everybody before the move to the Jive Software that Posting Aliases would be Permanent.

During the first version of this and into the second version they were changing the occasional name.

As this thread seems to confirm that stopped about 16 months ago.

As has been said before you can create a new Apple ID and use that to create a new Alias to post that you do like.

Your "old" account would retain the points it may have gained and they are not transferable to the new account. (not that many people are here for the points)
