Hi ! Try to dubble klick the home button rapidly so that you get the bar with the apps currently running at the bottom of the screen. Drag this bar to it's outmost left. There (see enclosed image below) User uploaded file

You will find the speaker settings.

The speaker icon at the far left may been disabled . In the image here iys abled. If it's disabled , klick it to enable sound output ! Hope this helps

Sounds a bit strange , just to make sure have you tried the to change the side switch settings to either Lock Rotation or Mute (see image below) , and after this also check the bottom slider for the sound settings as I described earlier. A final thing you may try is to restart/reboot the iPad by pressing the Sleep/Wake + Home buttons and then check the sound .

I'm just a little confused about this workaround. When I selected "lock rotation" I was able to mute/unmute the audio, and of course I enabled it, but I had the screen rotation locked, so I set to "mute" the switch on Settings menu to unlock the screen rotation but automatically the audio has been muted! Please could give me the correct sequence of step that I have to follow on iOS 5?

Thanks.

I've read this thread and have been pulling my hair out because none of the answers were working. I just figured it out. My daughter was playing an APP on my iPhone 4s and WITHIN the app's own settings she muted the sound. For whatever reason, this muted the sound in the other apps (just not normal items like keyboard clicks, message alerts, music, etc.). Actually, it's looking like I need to go into each app and turn on the sound there. Maybe that's the Apple glitch.
