iTunes 10.2.2 no longer organizing library

I have been adding video content to iTunes, and it was working normally. I've got "Keep iTunes Media folder organized" and "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to" checked, and when I add the files, they moved into the iTunes Media folder. When I renamed them or otherwise changed them, the files were updated.

I then upgraded to 10.2.2.12 after being prompted to do so. I have rebooted the computer a few times since just to make sure it's clear. (Win XP SP2, btw)

I continued to add video content, but just noticed that although the files are being copied into the iTunes Media folder, they are then not changing when I edit any information about them. When I change the name in iTunes, the filename doesn't change. When I change the video type from Movie to TV Show, it doesn't move the file from the "Movies" folder to the "TV Shows" folder.

Even weirder, when I do try to change the type from "Movies" to "TV Shows" for example, or change the name of the TV show, it creates the folder in the new location with the proper new name/location, but then doesn't actually move the file! Just creates an empty folder.

I have tried clicking on the file and saying "Consolidate Files..." and it does nothing. Both boxes for organizing/copying are checked.

Everything else seems to be working properly, but this is quite frustrating. Any thoughts? Can anyone else reproduce this problem on this version, or is it just me?

Thank you.

To follow-up, I complete un-installed iTunes (following the Apple instructions to remove all pieces), and reinstalled 10.2.2. Same problem. Renaming files or switching their type (TV or Movie) and iTunes didn't move the actual files themselves.

I then went ahead, uninstalled again, and installed 10.2.0 (reverted). Sure enough, the bug is gone. Renaming files in iTunes renames the file itself in the media library, and switching types between Movie and TV Show moves the file between Movies and TV Shows folders. Everything works as expected.

So it seems like somewhere in 10.2.2 (or possibly 10.2.1, I think I skipped that one) some bug was introduced.

Is anyone on 10.2.2 and able to say it works fine for them on Windows (XP) moving files, or replicate my problem? How do I submit a bug report?

Thank you!

Yupp.

I have the same problem. I didn't notice it until today. I download allot of podcasts and my "download" folder had 6.5 GB of temp files in it. iTunes creates a new folder in the "Download" folder for each downlad and the file downloaded is named just "download". I deleted the iTunes Application folder, killed all the Apple processes, iTunes helper etc, then uninstalled iTunes from Windows. After that I downloaded iTunes 10.2.0 and now everything works perfectly. It's kinda strange that Apple didn't catched this in their latest update of iTunes. Especially since the two last version of iTunes was supposed to fix allot of problems.

The only way i found to fix it, is to remove the tick on "Keep iTunes Media folder organized" press ok. then go into preferences and activate it again.

I wish I had thought about doing that before going through the whole process of reverting back to 10.2.0.

Can anyone else with this problem try coiter's solution (Remove "Keep iTunes Media folder organized", press ok. Then go back in and activate it.) and see if it solves the problem for them as well.

I'll check, but I don't want to waste time upgrading to 10.2.2, then find it doesn't work and have to revert back yet again. Would like to see if it fixes it for everyone else.

If so, good workaround, although they need to fix the bug.

Anyone know how to report a bug? I tried doing it through bugreport.apple.com and it kept erroring out ("an error has occured").

Thanks.

I organise my music manually but I just set up a quick test library and files & folder names are updated when I change the song title, album or album artist. Has your library ever been migrated from one system to another. It seems that some process in iTunes use the system account and others use your own. Perhaps this build has swtiched the account used for organising files leading to the proble, Your account (or everyone) and system should have full control of all the files and sub-folders contained in the iTunes folder.

Well. My problem is not that the song title won't change. Maybe there is such a problem but I don't use iTunes that much for organzing music so I don't know if I have that issue. My problem has to do with downloading podcasts. iTunes just store them in the "Download". Each download in it's own folder called blabla.tmp. When I downgrade to iTunes 10.2.0 it does not do that. So there must be some bug or something. The only migration I have done of my iTunes installation is when I have formated or upgraded my computer. I just save the "iTunes Library.itl" and more and put them back after the new installation is done. Have always worked.

The process of downgrading is pretty simple. May I remind you, this is for Windows. I have not tried this on a Mac.

The thing I did was first to kill all the Apple processes running, iTunesHelper, iPodService, AppleMobileDeviceHelper. I'm not sure if you have to do this but I did it anyway so that the installation wouldn't ask me to reboot in order to replace files. After that I just deleted the iTunes folder in Program Files folder, or on my Windows 7 64-bit, the Program Files (x86). After that I lauched the controll panel and uninstalled iTunes. And now, you are free to install your older version. It might be a good idea to backup your iTunes files anyway like iTunes Library.itl, iTunes Music Library.xml, iTunes Library Genius.itdb, iTunes Library Extras.itdb. I dont know for sure about the last two files but I always copy them anyway. And now it's just to install iTunes 10.2.0. However. If you are downgrading to lets say iTunes 9, I'm not sure if you can use your existing iTunes Library.itland iTunes Music Library.xml files with that version of iTunes. Maybe some one else knows.

This process of downgeading worked for me, twice and I haven't notices any problem with syncing or anything but of course I don't want to be blamed for messing up someones iTunes 😝

Occasionally a new build of iTunes makes a tweak to the internal structure of the iTunes database. In this case the current database is backed-up into the Previous iTunes Libraries folder and used to recreate the library in the new format. If you try to use a newer library with an older version of iTunes you may get a warning message to that effect and the library won't be opened. Using an old library with a new build just causes the library to be updated.

So.. sometimes to downgrade you need to restore an older version of your library from the Previous iTunes Libraries folder and then find a way to update that library with recent changes, e.g. use iTunes Folder Watch.
