Agree on most points..and love the ipod minis I refurb them even update with compact flash memory..love them...but to the point..I don't understand your advice..are you referring to getting 4.3 on the 2nd gen ipod touch (didn't think that could happen) or something else...like getting an older talkatone app (i think there is/was one but can't find it) that may work on 2nd gen touch with 4.2.1 OS...Not sure what 'old app' you are referring to...can you clarify..thanks

No, as you say, no updates to the ios.

You have to have an old copy of the app somewhere, saved in Time Machine I suppose would work, but I pulled a copy of the app off an older, unupdated computer.

So, for example, my not so old iPod Touch has an older version of the Dropbox app on it, that actually works. Where the new, updated, supposedly improved Dropbox app won't even load onto the Touch.

Be nice to be able to go to the App store and choose the version of the app that would work on the device we have but as has been noted ad nauseum, no luck there.

Yes. Buy a tablet that they will no long update less then a year out. Very smart. Wp8 and the tablets are ripoffs. You have to buy one every year to get software updates.

And do you have any way to prove that the new tablets cannot be updated? I'd really like to know because every tablet that I have see and held in my hands is upgradeable.

Hey folks...the last number of replies have been quite off topic, if not on the silly end of debating apple vs ms..I was only interested in thoughts about updating the ipod touch or other workarounds for using things like talkatone. Now I find my email box is getting filled with such silliness...please refrain, email eachother directly or another dialogue for folks interested in such debate...no offense intended, just good net community practice..thanks, rick

Rick. It's taken 30 minutes to come up to speed for a reply. This 2d gen touch was a gift, and now I feel as it's been taken away. Alot of companies rely on customer loyalty, and people (aka customers) need and base purchase decisions on company loyalty. So, I guess that the Apple dosen't need the customers for their products. It's been nice, fun, and very interesting! The Fun I had was truly an addiction, so I guess as every thing must come to an end and my touch will just become another MP3 player in a drawer. Thank you Rick. tw

I'm really hacked off because I recently spent £85 getting my daughter's second generation ipod touch fixed, and I might as well not have bothered! If only I'd had some sort of warning this was going to happen. She can now only use it for music. What a waste of money - I'm very quickly going off Apple and Apple software developers.

It's good for more than music. Functionality of the app depends on the developer and if they have maintained the app with the earlier versions of the iPod considered.

Among others that work are several medical apps that I use (including one very expensive app), Google Earth, and several online magazines and newsfeeds. If you have them backed up via Time Machine or another computer, some other apps will work if you get rid of the updated version and reload the old (see my earlier post for the method).

The real pain is that I now have 6 apps available for update for my wife's Touch that cannot be updated without deleting the older version that's working on my Touch. Now I know (from the hysterical fans) that Apple does not read this forum (not likely that some intern isn't watching, but that's beyond the issue), but this has to be one of the most ******* moves by a company I've ever seen. I mean, how hard would it be to have both apps available and update to the ios that's needed? As I said before, it's either stupidity or intentional.

So you cant update the 2nd Generation ipod touch anymore?
