I just tried to download Amazon Cloud player to my iPod touch and it told me I had to update to 4.3. But when I tried to go and do that, of course I got nowhere. It was very frustrating. Then I came here and found this. The touch is in perfectly good operating condition, as yours is, and I'm not happy about this. Planned obsolescence.

I have two other iPods, 2 iPhone 4s's, a Mac desktop, a Macbook and a new Macbook Pro. I wonder when they will have the same problem. 😟

Couldn't agree with Andros0 more. My daughter's 2nd gen iPod touch locked up yesterday and the only choice I had was to do a restore. In the process the iPod was upgraded to the latest version, iOS 4.2.1 and after the restore from backup completed some of the apps she had like Instagram and Mobicip were missing from her iPod because they need a newer iOS version. It sure would have been nice to get a warning message and the choice to not get a version of the app that the current iOS version didn't support. Now I see no way of getting the older version back. Had I known that this could happen I would have never upgraded the latest iOS version but it could have also happened when I did the restore which couldn't be avoided anyway. How hard would it be to keep older versions of apps around that worked on older iOS versions? It's not like they would need to support the older versions because the iOS version isn't ever going to change.

My daughter has been interested in a new iPod touch, probably the 4th gen because the 5th gen is too rich for my blood. Now that I see how Apple recklessly handles their app updates I'm going to explain to her that her new iPod will probably have the same issues in a couple years and try to talk her into something else. Any suggestions anyone?

OK I feel cheated!!

Got the ipod as a 3RD GENERATION at cosco and didnt even know it was a 2ND GENERATION until it wouldnt update😮😠!! So basically i paid for a 3rd gen and got a 2nd gen! How is that at all fair😠??? Without the update it is not possible to get a majority of apps!!!! Including INSTAGRAM!!

At the very least stuff like that should be available.

And, even if the newer updates involve camera and mic stuff....Y IS IT NOT POSSIBLE TO MAKE THEM COMPATABLE WITH THE SECOND GEN!!!!😕

THE MESSAGE APPLE IS BASICALLY SENDING IS" IF U DONT BUY OUR NEWEST PRODUCTS WE WILL FORCE YOU TO BY TAKING AWAY WHAT IT CAN DO👿"😠

DOES ANYONE ELSE FEEL CHEATED, TRICKED, AND JIPPED😠😠⚠⚠!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If the packaging says its a 3rd gen, if your receipt says its a 3rd gen, and if the store display said it was a 3rd gen, then you have grounds for full refund.

Vazandrew - you're missing the important point here (ignore the fact that ZWL9 has had a bad retail experience). The point is that the OS is being broken by a bad update procedure (as outlined by TheParent in post on 18th Nov) - no 2nd gen iPod user wants to lose functionality of some apps! There should have been a simple pop up explaining that certain apps would fail to work upon update. That has not happened. And it's impossible to roll back to previous working versions it seems. And that is wrong dammit!

Significantly, rather than building a loyal user base (early adopters), this is making people like me - who have been using Apple products for many years - move away from Apple. They are creating unneccessary ambient hardware waste due to a poorly executed set of update procedures.

I've had it with this discussion now. In fact I don't own even my iPod any more - someone stole it! Pity for me the .me FindMyIPod service was pulled (it helped me locate it many times previously) and my iPod couldn't use iCloud's identical service because it's wasn't up to it - heh. Pity for them they won't be able to get much use from it any more - heh.

So you cant update the 2nd Generation ipod touch anymore?
