Your bottom line is concise, but that's about it.

  1. If the apps were working fine, why was there a forced restore? Restores usually indicate apps aren't working fine.
  2. Your device forced itself to restore...by itself? I have restored my ipod 2g exactly twice the entire time I've owned it. The first time it was working fine, not quite as snappy with 4.2.1 but fully functioning and chugging along at a reasonable speed for an old man. I just decided to start fresh before I, ahem, started messing with its private bits. The second restore was something I forced myself into by constantly fiddling with its private bits. What I'm doing here is painting a picture of a world where idevices don't get up and restore themselves and there fine working apps while you're sleeping. It's not as concise as your bottom line, but neither does it attempt to blame apple for my incompetence on the things I was installing.
  3. Bottom line revised by: animus exnihilo. " I screwed my device up. It was an old man and I tried to give it wheelies. Needless to say this lead to some serious broken bones which needed resetting. I clicked the red button without serious consideration. It awoke from its coma with no memories. I yelled at the doctor for not making new old memories to replace the ones I didn't bother to hold dear, watch over, or quickly back up in itunes with a restore point. The doctor is ignoring me.

iPod Touch 1st & 2nd Gen = Abandoned.

Devices unsupported after less than 2 Years from POS! If you got a 12month extended device support warranty it would have ran out at the same time as your devices actual OS support. LOL that's borderline criminal/Evil.

I think its possibly against consumer LAW in a lot of countries. The devices being still functional have had their original capability disabled by the manufacturer and it's policies.

I guess the iPod Touch and iPhone 3rd an 4th Gens will be next. Then iPads. Welcome to Apple Corporate. 🙂

These aren't the acts of a socially caring or community aware company but one concerned only with profit and share price. Business these days is not about customers its about sales.

Moral of the story: If you want a suported device for longer than 2 years, don't buy Apple products.

I'll stand by that.

This is like Groundhog Day. The same stuff from you vazandrew. I'm starting to wornder if you're a bot.

"Technology evolves" - yes it does, as does almost everything in the man-made world since caveman times. We understand this basic concept. Please stop saying this as though this is some sort of insight.

"you can continue to use them and they function in the same way as when you purchased them." - no you can't and this is the issue goddammit. The device is dependent upon an interface with a computer and an OS.

As I say I don't even own a **** iDevice any more. I quit this discussion as of now - you've beaten me into submission with your small-minded Apple-philia. It's bad system design and integration, typical of Apple losing its way recently.

The many posts to this discussion from disillusioned Apple device owners (soon to be non-Apple device owners) speaks for itself.

Have you ever heard of planned obsolescence? What you are thinking is not a conspiracy theory. Instead, it is a rather obvious rule that many companies incorporate into their practices. Educate yourself. I have cited a resource, tailored for your ability level: http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/10/28/disruptions-you-know-you-cant-live-with out-apples-latest-glass-rectangle/

Is this a conspiracy theory? Yes. And no the other companies’ don’t do thing the same way. Imagine you want to install a new printer for your bran new pc with windows 7. But unfortunately windows 8 is now in the market and for one reason your printer now only works with windows 8 and your pc can’t be upgraded to win 8 forcing you to buy other new pc with windows 8 on it. If that scenario was to be true, the world would be a chaos.

Fortunately, these is not how the pc world works but unfortunately these is the way apple is forcing you to buy a new hardware each time a new version is in the market

On a pc or other devices that uses Microsoft OS or others like android the story is very different, I can tell you that you can still find people all over the world that still uses windows Xp, or windows 98 and their software still works on their devices. This is because Microsoft or the other companies are not forcing you to buy a brand new computer every year.

The problem is really easy to address, for a big company like apple. I think they can address the problem simply by showing in the app store, in side every application a part where you can choose a version that better works for you. Or the apps store should detect your IOS version and download the app version that better works for your device, obviously for apps that have older versions. The new ones are off the table, simply because they were built for a more advance IOS.

I understand people that claims technology has to advance, and people with it. But the fact here is that Apple is doing things faster for their own good.

And for the people who don’t believe in this, people who thinks that I am wrong and love apple with all their guts, Time will tell, some day you are going to be on this side of things, one day your brand new IPod, IPhone or Ipad will be like you said obsolete.

Sorry for my terrible English, my native language is Spanish and it’s complicated for me. But I think I made myself understand. And I have to say that I’m a computer Engineer, I know how things work on the technology side.

Deleting all the irrelevant information in your post, we are left with something that may just be an answer. However, you won't solve anything by adding to this very pointless thread.

If you have a positive suggestion, start a new thread, because adding to this one is useless.

I too have a 2nd gen Touch, so I know exactly what the issue is. I also have an opinion on Apple's behaviour on this subject and what they should be doing to address existing owner's justified concerns. But it all counts for nothing while all everyone wants to do is whinge, moan and complain. If I ever figure out a way to stop people concentrating on the negative, then perhaps I'll get somewhere.

I'm not holding my breath!

Jan 17, 2013 5:44 AM in response to the fiend

You people have no clue. Do you have any idea how much server space it would take to store every version of every app and every version of iOS for every iDevice? If you did you wouldn't be here whineing like a bunch of spoiled children

You think that just because have have a device that is way past its support life, Apple some how owes you something. Well, the fact of the matter is NO ONE, and this includes Apple, owes you anything. Nada, zilch, zip, butkiss.

I have a 2nd gen Touch, and it works jus fine. Sure, I can't use the latest apps, but who cares? In stead of crying because Apple has moved on, I made sure that I have backups.

And here we have the perfect Apple customer. So star struck by the technology that he is happy to be ripped off time after time.

Wake up to yourself Clifton. Yes I do realise how much server space it would take to store every version of every app and every version of iOS for every iDevice and I also realise it would barely put a tiny dent in Apples revenue.

Apple are not about providing a service to consumers, they are all about making even more profits from the fools who are so stupid they will even line up all night to get ripped off.

Jan 19, 2013 3:46 PM in response to ViVaH8

On the contrary, I am not "star struck" by technology. I have worked around technology all of my adult life, and one thing I can tell you is that just about the time you get comfortable with a new toy, a 'better' one hits the store shelves.

And FYI, I have a 2nd gen because I fixed it. For $12.00 in parts and some time I have a decent MP3 player, and when I'm near a wireless net work I can surf the web. Its a TOY. I use it, it does not use me. In fact, it's been about two weeks since I've used the darned thing because the weather is too nasty for riding my motorcycle.

And, I was not say that Apple was providing server space for users. You get a measly 5 gigs with iColud, which I wouldn't trust to hold anything.

I will agree with the standing in line part. That is just plain stupid... I spent 20 years in the Navy standing in freakin' lines, and I'll be hanged before I wait in line for the latest wiz-bang toy from anyone...

And to set the record straight, I also own a 5th gen iPod video that I repaired ($10.00 for a new 30 gig hard drive), a 4th generation 16 gig iPod touch (b-day present..), and a 30 gig Zune that I repaired ($12.00 for a new system board...), and I have an iPhone 4 because it was part of a bundel from my provider. Its a phone...DUH...

And, I wouldn't own an Apple computer if you paid me....

Oh, one last thing: Apple is a business enterprise. The function of a business is to provide goods, services, or both to the public and to show a profit to the share holders. The basic idea is you sell what you make, or charge for a service you provide. Typically those fees include something called a profit margin. Profit is determined by subtracting your gross income from you costs. Costs include raw materials, business taxes, licensing and other public fees, Research and Devleopment (R&D), infrastructure (buildings, warehousing, shipping, and so forth), employee salaries, employee benefits (401K contributions, Health Insurance, Workman's Compensation Insurance, etc.), employee training, management training, and don't forget Federal, State, and local taxes...

What you should be complaining about is the fact that until very recently, Apple products were manufactured out side of the US, which means that US citizens were not working. That is Apple's real crime, not the fact they turn a profit....

I've just been going around in circles trying to get my ipod 4.x to connect to icloud.... only to find there are no longer updates for gen 2 ipods. This really *** as I am a quadriplegic and listen to lots of music on my ipod and keep running out of space. I thought icloud would be the answer only to find I cant connect to icloud with an older ipod.

When you buy a product you expect support for the life of that item or at least offer a cheaper upgrade to the new outdated one.

So you cant update the 2nd Generation ipod touch anymore?
