iCloud wouldn't help in that regard, it would be better to use a streaming service.
Alternatively, if there is more music in an iTunes Library than can be put onto an iPod (which presumably, is Gamertron's concern), perhaps the answer (or "a" solution) is to Sync only Selected Playlists, Artist and Genres to the iPod.
Then, with clever us of Smart Playlists, it's possible to create Playlists that automatically add and remove songs each day iTunes is opened and even on-the-fly, and for those to be Synced with the iPod at each Sync with its iTunes library. This is achieved by setting up several different Smart Playlists, each with its own set of rules and then combining all those Playlists into one Smart Playlist.
The result is an ever changing mixture of songs, some not played (for example) for just two weeks, while others have not been played for two months, or even never at all. So my personal favourites are (potentially) played more often than the less favourite ones, along with other songs I haven't marked as favourite but still want to hear every now and again.
Hi Clifton,
while I agree with (almost) everything you say, I did feel that one of your comments appeared to be aimed squarely at me:
Perhaps I am mistaken, I hope so.
The point I was trying to make (which apparently I failed to get across to far too many people) was that although Apple's development of later iOS versions is fully understandable, because one benefit they look for is that users will be tempted to buy the newer model, it's not so easy to understand why App developers haven't realised that if a user (who cannot afford to upgrade their iPod) naïvely updates an App which the iPod cannot install, and they therefore lose use of the App, then the developer has lost a customer. So the result is that Apple appears to lose nothing, while the App developer does lose business.
It occurred to me that the poeple who moan here would be better served if they concentrated on the actual issues;
None of what I have said here is designed to minimise the development of Apple's business, I'm all in favour of continued development of the iOS and the hardware. But if App developers lose business, without fully understanding why, that wouldundermine both them and, eventually, Apple.
What is truely unbelievable is that this thread has been going for almost two years, and yet some people refuse to get the message; they continue to whinge on about the same issue, side issues which distract them from the real issue and even subjects that have nothing to do with the original post.
Phil
P.S. Good to see that you're still contributing to the forums.
Reply to "the fiend"...I had to look to see why and but came to find that the poster IS the "fiend".
What the fiend states here is absolutely, positively spot on. All I would have asked for is the option to NOT upgrade the app if it would be unusable on my ipod. Or the option to downgrade once the app didn't work. Upon a forced restore, my backed up ipod would not load the apps that had been upgraded past its capabilities.
These apps include Yelp, Zillow, Trulia, New York Times, medical apps, Dropbox, Tumbler, and others. None of these companies have any exposure on the device I use or exposure only via slow and clunky web access, because they have failed to insist or develop apps that will continue to work on a not very old Touch.
Sure, I'll eventually purchase a new one, but this one is still a functional, though highly overpriced mp3 player that can surf the web (sometimes, it seems that some wifi systems aren't doing so well with it either). Replacing the new apps with backed up older versions does not seem to work, or at least I have not been successful at it.
The posters that denigrate those of us with what we see are valid complaints might be better served with suggesting work-arounds.
Thanks for your suggestion... this is pretty much what I do, altho' didn't know about smartlists so thanks for your solution 🙂
Hmmm I thought the whole hype about icloud was to be able to listen to your purchased songs on multiple devices?? My ipod holds 4gb and icloud holds 5gb so in effect I thought I'd have access to 9gb of content.
Do you happen to have the backup for the Ibook?? I got my itouch 2 gen from a gift from my older sister and all i want to do is to read books. I have no backup or anything at all.. Is there a way u can take that out ur computer and share it?? any version that works for the gen 2 is welcome.
It allows you to access your purchased music from the cloud, it still has to load onto your device. So if you don't have space it's not going to help. That 5gb is for device backup and other document data.
If one has iTunes Match then it allows a form of streaming, though it still caches it on the device (requiring a reset of iTM to wipe).
Oh I see.... the way icloud is promoted it seemed like it streamed from the cloud rather than downloaded. I don't really have a use for icloud to renew then as I backup my music to external HD anyway. Thanks for clearing this up for me Vazandrew.
Well I guess my daughter has a 2nd gen paperweight. Her laptop with Itunes died and now some of her apps she bought cannot be downloaded again because of the IOS. So now it's nothing more than a mp3 player.
I love how some of the folks here justify what Apple is doing. You will all be crying when your 5th gen touches are no longer supported. Maybe not. Probably will fork out $400 for a 6th or 7th gen to stay trendy.
Yes tech does out date but not at the rate of Apple products. Android is the way to go for more longevity and a tighter wallet. I will NEVER purchase their OVERPRICED products again.
First they will tell you that you should have bought an apple computer to your daughter, coz apple stuff "never" fails...
I feel your pain... I also have a overpriced MP3 player...
And I also think like you I will never buy any apple product again.

AMEN
Apple has a recycle program for your ipod, and you get 10 percent off your next ipod. and the Ipod is not a computer it is a mobile device, it's like yelling at a brick phone from the ninties can't play angry birds.
oh no no no no no no... dude no no no no no no no...
I was able to play angrybirds in my itouch gen 2, as a matter of fact i still can it is one of the 4 apps that havent blcoked.... yet.....
I used to have Facebook, ibooks, kindle reader an awesome PDF reader, my public transport information, a good calculator and a niice tip calculator, etc... but now I cant coz apple blocked all old apps, they were available now they are not... dont get confused...
I still can play the snake game in my old 90s phone, they did not try to force me to buy they new product to continue playing snake..... ( and can used it as a defence weapon too)
and my itouch did not cost 40 bucks when I bought it... so no thanks i prefer to give it to someone who is poor and wants an mp3 player and a thing to hold papers, i am one of the angry customers that will never ever buy anything from apple.. i just want acces to the last version of apps available for my itouch... as a matter of fact just ibooks and kindle... but no.. i will never get that, will I???
