Apple should have been honest in their advertising or helpful with finding a solution.
Wow, could you imagine all the disclaimers needed to follow this stupid idea.
"Buy the new, 2012 new Ford Fiesta. It does not have..."
"Buy a new Mesa Caliente home. It does ot have..."
"Buy a new HP Pavilion p6z. It does not have..."

A small digression:
In the 70's Ford ran a Blitz Ad campaign (featuring lots of glowing praise for the home team) comparing their products to BMW, each ended with the tag: 'Underneath it's a actually a Ford'
BMW ran one ad
'It's a BMW'
🙂

I disagree strongly with your analogy.
The majority of purchasers probably know as little about computer technology as they do about automotive technology. They never so much as heard of Flash before buying an iPad. They can send email messages, they can post notices on Facebook and they can browse the web. They can start a car, they know how to use the steering wheel, the gas pedal and the brake pedal. They know how to put gasoline in it. If the Ford Fiesta does not run on Exxon gasoline, a disclaimer would be very appropriate.
"To call this web surfing doesn’t do it justice. You hold the Internet in your hands like a book, flip through it like a magazine, and do everything with your fingers on the big, beautiful iPad display. It’s like you control the whole wide web yourself." (C&P from http://www.apple.com/ipad/built-in-apps/safari.html) I read that as implying that there is no limit to web support. A disclaimer would be quite appropriate.
How would they not know about something which they supposedly depend on daily. I constantly get "reminded" of Flash with my Mac because I have to update it. I do not believe that folks have not had to deal with Flash by needing to update it to get to the Flash content they so desperately need.
A disclaimer would be quite appropriate.

That's perfect but they'd have a hard time fitting it here (which, of course, is where it belongs):

Do you have any friends or family members that are not geeks?
Yes, and when the notice that they do not have the latest version of Flash pops up they usually ask me about it. But they know what Flash is and I just have to remind them that there is a bookmark in Safari to go to the Flash update website to get the latest version.
BTW, I am not a geek. My cousins/nephews that handle IT for us are the geeks.
The non-geeks that I know of have no clue what Flash is. They just "Google" what they want and bookmark what they like.
"And if you wait patiently you will have very few sites that you have to worry about running Flash"
I believe that is going to be quite a while. Now that the flash problem is solved I'll be going to my grandchildren's school to give them a heads up about the textbooks available on the iPad.

I think Steve Jobs made it pretty clear that Apple's postiiton is that Flash is not a web standard.
Based on this statement, one would not expect any kind of disclaimer abot the iPad.
Please understand, I'm trying to explain, not defend Apple here.

In fact since 2007 the percentage of web sites that have either added HTML5 compatibility or switched has grown by more than 25% the last time I looked. And this was before Adobe made their announcement. How many sites have you been to lately that only offer Realplayer for music?
What's Realplayer?
"The non-geeks that I know of have no clue what Flash is. They just "Google" what they want and bookmark what they like."
Yes, these would be the same people that don't change the oil on their car, never change their air conditioner filters, don't clean the diswasher filter, remove lint from the lint filter, etc. And have to ask their grandchildren to set their DVR.
"It was no secret that Flash was not supported, you failed to research your purchase and need someone to take responsibility for you. Adobe have announced (you did you catch it, right?) that they will no longer support Flash on any mobile device so this horse has gone."
All I'm guilty of is buying my iPad beforehand. I believed Apple when they told me the iPad was going to give me the net.
I now have flash on my iPad (you did catch it, right?) You don't need adobe for flash.
