Killed iMac G5 -- Revival Possible ?

Following is a Synopsis of previous action taken on thread "Killed HD on iMAC G4<sic> -- Any Hope":

Needed to partition 148G External HD ---

Transfered 42G to iMac G5 with 48G available ---

After transfer, all individual files were deposited on Desktop of G5, without thinking, I copied desktop in order to make one file, consequently overloading G5 iMac which became unresponsive, showing only blank action boxes.

Under BDAqua's instructions I attempted booting in Target Mode, Single User, and Safe Mode. All modes work but G5 will not accept password (am looking for possible alternates) and I don't understand proper procedure in Single User Mode.

Would like to clean up IMAC G5. Will wait for help. ....goldie

External HD - 148G (USB only)

External HD - 1T (Firewire 400/800, USB, SATA)

iMAC G5 79G (overloaded)

iMac, Mac OS X (10.4.11), G5 79G 2G-Ram

HA! HA! 😊 Been a long time since I've seen a Basic screen, looked again and hit power button, the screen noted same. lol then came the flash. "Type 'reboot'" Voila!

Still won't recognize password.

Is there a way on the black screen (I'm sure there's a better name or is it still Basic?) to identify the administrator of the HD? My son may have changed it when he FW the eMac's files.

(Aside) This new Forum configuration is really confusing, seems to jumble up the posts so the continuity is totally messed up. Am I just not getting it or are they due for a rethink?

To make it easy, use Easyfind and search only the G5's drive for case insensitive, Show Hidden, files only of...

applesetupdone

You'll see the path there & can even trash it or move it from the EasyFind window.

I'd get EasyFind...

Here's a direct download link to EasyFind 4.0 which runs in 10.3.9 & up...

Downloaded EasyFind, still no -- applesetupdone --, still not accepting password.

Possible solution! (?) When I went to turn on my iMac Intel, it wouldn't accept the password. (PANIC!! Thought I'd passed a bug to this machine.) Discovered that I'd lost wireless connection. Is it possible the G5 is not connecting to the internet?

Couldn't access Intel with password so shut down, disconnected power then rebooted with Installation Disk in safe mode and checked password, it was correct! Shut machine down and in process was notified "connection lost". Reconnected wireless and rebooted Intel Mac, accepted password and powered up. Tried G5 again, still no acceptance of PW.

Will reboot in FW and look around for possible clues. Waiting for your instructions.

On the G5 and not finding that file, I think it's possible the whole var folder got removed due to the KB or whatever caused the spurious characters, I'd search for that hidden folder on the G5.

The G5 not connecting to the Internet shuoldn't matter except for a lag in booting up, or it was set to Network Login.

When booting the G5 with the Option/alt key held down, does it show a choice of boot devices?

Apr 26, 2011 12:55 PM in response to BDAqua

The G5 is a rebuilt and I've only had it for three months, it was supposed to be wiped clean and came with 10.4.2 (I believe) I updated it to 10.4.11 but never activated the firmware password. So I don't believe it has been activated.

Message was edited by: Goldenbill: If I bought a 10.4.11 software package would that fix it? I have all the files on my eMac and now on my Intel Mac

I've been looking around for a 10.4.xx boot disc without success. If you can lead me to one it would be appreciated.

However, I still want to persue this problem. I am going to do some research on the /var file. I don't really know what I'm looking for but have found another avenue of search "Finder-Find"(Cmd+f in Finder) which gives a more indepth search option. I'm going to research /var, and then see if the finder-find will be of some help. I hope you can stay with me here.
