How do I fix my audio/video in iChat 4.0.9? it has worked perfectly until last night.

How do I fix my audio/video in iChat 4.0.9? it has worked perfectly until last night. I have been having video calls iChat with my granddaughter for 4 weeks. All of a sudden last night I wasn't able to complete the video/audio. We were able to iChat with writing. The message I got was to go to connection doctor.

The error log -

2011-04-24 19:33:43 -0400: No data has been received for the last 10 seconds.

Audio channel info: local machine using 10.0.1.2:16402, expecting remote machine to send to 69.138.244.124:58521

Video channel info: local machine using 10.0.1.2:16402, expecting remote machine to send to 69.138.244.124:58521

Every time we tried to connect I got the same error message.

I use an airport extreme - my granddaughter has some kind of wifi - but the error was on my side not hers as she connected to her friends.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Go to your Applications/Utilities folder and open the Airport Utility.

When this is Open chose your Airport in the list.

Then click the Manually Configure button.

Select the Internet icon across the top

Select the NAT tab

Enable Port Mapping Protocol if it is not already

Save settings (It may say Apply)

What sort of modem do you have ?

If it is cable you will not need to do anything more.

If it is DSL can you tell us the make and Model please ?
If you happen to know if the Airport is In Bridge (Off) Mode it would be useful.

Hi,

It is not required that you set any Ports in the Port Mapping Protocol.

Just being Enabled works similar to UPnP in other routers in that effectively the Apps tell the router which ports to Open and When.

The Connection Doctor > Errors Tab info you posted says that the Local IP (Computer) is 10.0.1.2 and in iChat it is using port 16402 (this is the default port for this bit)

Your Public IP (The one the Modem gets fro your ISP) is the other IP number.

This says the port has changed.

One reason this can happen is that the Modem as well as the Airport are Routing.

Do you have a DSL Modem ?

If so what make and model ?

Open Airport Utility and login to the Internet icon bit again.
Do you have four tabs (You may have less)

In the First tab what does it read at the Bottom ?

"Share a Public IP" ?

Or "Bridge (Off) Mode" ?

Between that drop down and the tabs should be the info on how it connects to the Modem.

It may list that Puiblic IP.

It may list another LAN IP (one from the Modem)

Does it start 192.168....

Or 172.16 (or up to 172.32....)

Or possibly another 10.... number ?

If the modem is issuing IPs to the LAN there are two things that can effect things

One is the fact the computer gets two IPs (even though the mac can only display one)

And If you used Port Forwarding in the Modem the Place (IP/Computer or device) that it was pointing to may not be the Airport Base Station any more.

Hi - I have a cable modem from comcast.

I am not sure I understand all your questions, suggestions - so I will copy what I have when I go into the airport utility under internet.

Do you have four tabs (You may have less) I HAVE 4 TABS

In the First tab what does it read at the Bottom ? AT THE BOTTOM OF THE FIRST TAB (INTERNET CONNECTION) IT DOES SAY "SHARE A PUBLIC IP" WHEN I LOOK AT THAT SETTING - I COULD CLICK INSTEAD BRIDGE MODE OFF, OR DISTRIBUTE A RANGE OF IP ADDRESSES. BUT FOR NOW THE ONE THAT IT IS ON IS THE SHARE A PUBLIC IP.

"Share a Public IP" ?

Or "Bridge (Off) Mode" ?

I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHERE TO LOOK FOR THE INFO BELOW. I ALSO HAVE UNDER THE INTERNET CONNECTION TAB - CONNECT USING ETHERNET AND ETHERNET WAN PORT AUTOMATIC (DEFAULT)

THE 2ND TAB IS TCP/IP AND THERE IT LISTS CONFIGURE IPv4: USING DHCP

IP ADDRESS: 69.138.244.124

SUBNET MASK 255.255.248.0

ROUTER ADDRESS 69.138.240.1

DNS SERVER 68.87.73.246 AND 68.87.71.230 (THESE ARE FILLED IN THE BOXES AND NOT CHANGEABLE.

THE 3RD TAB IS DHCP

DHCP BEGINNING ADDRESS 10.0 .1 .2

DHCP ENDING ADDRESS 10.0.1.200

DHCP LEASE IS 1 THEN DAY

4TH TAB NAT

CHECKED IS ENABLE NAT PORT MAPPING PROTOCOL

I HAVE BEEN USING THIS AIRPORT EXTREME FOR AT LEAST ONE YEAR.

THE ONLY DIFFERENT ISSUE IS THAT I HAD BEEN TRAVELING AND USED MY DAUGHTER'S AIRPORT EXTREME LAST WEEK. I HAVE NO IDEA ANY OF THAT INFO - BUT I DO KNOW THAT THE AIRPORT EXTREME LISTED IN THE UTILITY IS THE ONE AT MY HOME THAT I AM WITH NOW.

THANK YOU FOR TAKING THE TIME TO TRY TO HELP ME. I REALLY APPRECIATE IT.

JUDY

Hi,

Brilliant.

JUst the info I was after.

(it seems that the layout has changed since I obtained some Pictues on this and some info is in different tabs/places)

The Modem is a cable one and is unlikely to Route (Distribute IPs)

This is confirmed by the other Info you posted. (That IP is a a Public one) It comes from your ISP (Comcast).

As this needs to be a router it needs to "Share A Public IP" for more then one computer or Wifi Able device to use the internet at the same time.

Effectively it means the Airport then does DHCP and issues IPs to your Computers

In System Preferences > Network > Advanced Button > DNS tab do these number appear

DNS SERVER 68.87.73.246 AND 68.87.71.230

If not add them manually.

Also in The Network Setting for Airport does it list Your Airport or hers ?

(It may even list both - under joining Preferential Networks)

It is late where I am and it will be some while before I pick up any replies.

Hi,

I have added the numbers below where you said to..

In System Preferences > Network > Advanced Button > DNS tab do these number appear

It lists both and also has many more - since it is checked to REMEMBER ANY NETWORK THIS COMPUTER HAS JOINED.

I WILL TRY TO ICHAT TONIGHT AND WILL LET YOU KNOW IF IT WORKS.

THANKS SO MUCH.

Hi,

I expect you also get the pop up to send to Apple ?

These can be examined at the time by using the reveal triangle near the word "Details" on the left.

User uploaded file

Old ones are also stored on your computer.

They are in your Home Folder/Library/Logs/iChatConnectionErrors (the last is all one word)

In this folder they are dated and timed like the info in the Connection Doctor.

They will open Console and create a second window with just the Log in it.

They/It will be quite long.

I also don't need the long paragraph at the bottom that starts "Binary Images for iChat"

See this section on my page about this. The Red bit is likely to contain more info than this short example (it also will not be coloured. I don't need the Blue bit which will be much longer as well.

Hi,

I am finished with the conference and did not try to iChat since I sent you the connection doctor logs from April 26, 2011. So now when I follow your instructions to look at the old ones stored on the computer under Home Folder/Library/Logs/iChatConnectionErrors all I see are 4 Errors - from April 24, 2011 - strange since I tried later than that.

I don't know if you want those since it was before I added the numbers to the DNS?

I just don't understand what happened to the other ichatconnectionerrors????? from later dates.

Thanks,

Judy

Hi,

Did you get the Pop-up each time ?
The iChatConnectioErrors will only get a log added if there was a Pop Up.

In some cases iChat does not quite "See" them as Errors.

The Logs start with a header paragraph about changing the connection State and ends with the Error Log number.

Error 8 tends to be a connection issue centred around ports and Access to the Internet.

Error 20 tends to be about losing the connection in the middle of the chat (Or ichat closing the chats as there is no data)
Error 22 is about Internet speed (Or the portion that you get that is free for iChat if you are using other computer and apps that use the Internet.)

Error 4 appears on earlier version of iChat if the other end is connected to the router twice (Such as WiFI and Ethernet) or there are two Routing devices (Excluded in this case, your end)

It can also Appear in Leopard if that computer is Sharing the Internet in System Preferences > Sharing - There is something wrong with this as it "Sees" the second computer or Phone's link back to the internet albeit this is through the same computer.

There is also an Error 21 that reports that No Camera is attached.

I have yet to work this one out as it cannot start a Video chat unless there is a camera (Meaning the wording is not all there is to these things)

Error 7is similar to Error 4.

I can't say what "happened" to the Logs you think are missing, but as I said in some cases iChat misses them anyway.

It may be useful to see an old one (Down to that Binary Images line) if the symptoms are the same.

Did you get the Pop-up each time ? YES I DID. AND I SENT YOU THE INFO ABOVE FROM APRIL 26! THOSE CAME FROM THE POP-UP AND CONNECTION DOCTOR ERROR LOG.
The iChatConnectioErrors will only get a log added if there was a Pop Up.

In some cases iChat does not quite "See" them as Errors. IT STILL ONLY SHOWS THE 4 ERRORS FROM APRIL 24!

The Logs start with a header paragraph about changing the connection State and ends with the Error Log number. THEY HAVE ALWAYS BEEN THE SAME - EVEN WITH THE 3 TIMES I DID CONNECT IN BETWEEN. IT SAYS

Error -20 (No data has been received for the last 10 seconds.)

HERE IS THE LAST ONE FROM APRIL 24 - DOWN TO THE BINARY IMAGES LINE. THANK YOU ONCE AGAIN FOR YOUR PERSISTENCE AND PATIENCE. AND I DEFINITELY KNOW IT IS MY ICHAT THAT DOESN'T CONNECT. AND TO CHECK AGAIN, I HAVE TO CONTACT MY GRANDDAUGHTER WHO IS OUT ALL DAY.
