    Have you tried the standard:

    - Reset:

Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home

button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

    - Restore from backup via iTunes

    - Restore to factory default/new iPod via iTunes.

    - Last, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store of call AppleCare since you have a hardware problem.

I had the same problem I think it is a hardware problem the apple store will be able to replace the whole unit

I have same problem ...What's the fix for this ? Do we need to go to apple store or there is any alternative ?

  • siddy36 Level 1 Level 1

it is better to hold the power button along with the home button for 10 sec. and then try....
i too had the same problem but after opening the camera for about 5 minutes, it started...
maybe its just the first time use problem....

    Same here.

I've held power and Home button, 10 seconds.

    Waited for restart.

    Tapped Camera... No change.

Waited about a minute to be able to slide between Camera and Video, but shutter is closed.

    Next stop... Genius Bar

The shutter on my iPhone4 closed when I swtiched between the front and main cameras. Now it stays closed, and now that the shutter is closed, the main/front switch in the upper-right corner of the screen is unavailable. There's another way to switch between the front and main cameras -- when the FaceTime video feature is in use, the main/front camera switch is displayed at the bottom-left corner of the screen. Unfortunately, I dont' know anyone else who has an iPhone4, so that I can call them using FaceTime (in order to display the switch so that I can switch back to the main camera).

When the shutter on the main camera is closed, I can set the Camera/Video switch to Video, but the controls are generally unresposive after that. I hope I don't have to replace my iPhone4...

I came to the forum to try to get a handle on my iPods Camera shutter being closed.

Tried everything mentioned above, couldn't change the fact that the camera shutter was stuck in the closed possition.

Eventually replaced it through Apple Store near me.

    Works fine now.

@ Fittingforsoul - If it's a new device it should be too difficult to replace

I have just about the same problem too, but if i have an application running like facetime, it just keeps the shutter closed, plus the camera and video button flashes gray and white. I also cannot do voice memos.

I'm having the same problem: brand new iPad 2, out of the box. In the first sync was made an update of the iOS.

The camera shutter won't open, altough FaceTime camera works properly...

Already tried reseting, but made no diference. Think I'm going to suport now.

    Kind of disapointed... :(

  • Albfreitas Level 1 Level 1

Was a hardware problem. Apple changed my iPad for a new one. :-/

I also have the same problem. I am sure it is not a mechanical problem. it is likely to be a software problem, and Aple should take the responsability to resolve it. Paying hugly for I phone, and not with proper support is not ethical.

Have same issue, just updated to IOS 5.01 and restored as new iPhone and still goes hay wire when i switch to front camera, though on messages when i take picture, camera works, the front camera also works. do you think the default camera app on the phone has a bug? i have HDR fussion and it works (prefer the standard camera).

The most popular thread on this has nearly 25,000 views. Below is the follow-up post I put on that thread and all these related threads.

If it was just a hardware problem, Apple should fix it for all of us. But I can't quite understand how it's a hardware problem when the problem is not common to all my camera apps; the Apple camera app does not work at all now, but I can take regular pics with other camera apps I have.

But still, trying to switch to FaceTime/self-portrait mode results in total failure and the need to restart....if it was just a hardware issue I'd expect it to not work for all apps.

ALTHOUGH if you live nean an Apple store, got repair coverage, or can send it in and fix it, go for it. And if replacing or repairing hardware is the only Apple solution, then that's the way to go...until/unless a software fix is discovered.

I initially posted: "keep talking it up on Discussions and send Feedback." Now I encourage us all to SEND FEEDBACK.

Feedback is different than discussions. FEEDBACK is set up to take reports of bugs or problems and just posting on Discussions may not be noticed properly.

To send Apple FEEDBACK for the iPodTouch go to

    My Feedback was:

QUOTE: "Dear Apple, many, many problems are being reported about camera malfunctions. One thread in Discussions is that has over 60 complaints and there are several other threads about this, so something is obviously wrong.

Thanks for your attention to this. Apple is a fine company and hope it continues that way. The camera is a key feature of these products: the iPod Touch and iPhone. Not having the camera work properly is ridiculous. Some software fix needs to become available.

    Sincerely... END QUOTE

After you Submit the Feedback you get this message:

    iPod touch

Thank you for your feedback on the iPod touch.

We cannot respond to you personally, but please know that your message has been received and will be reviewed by the iPod touch Team

So we won't get personal reply but this needs to be done for the good of us all.

Don't depend on someone else to do this -- you/we need to each do this.

Agreed -- I got a replacement iphone 4s yesterday with this problem. They instructed me to wipe the phone and re-sync it. If it happens again? Re-sync each item manually and see which item causes the problem. My phone is a tool, not my full time job. The problem did not exist on the iphone4s I was replacing (same ios, same apps -- iphone1 was damaged).  This is not support. I'm going to resync the phone and if it does not work they are going to replace it until it does.
