? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?

What the ****?

1) My analogy referred to a car with a boot/trunk which could not be used because the manufacturer had disabled it - not a car which does not have one.

2) Ferraris DO have a boot/trunk. Where else would their owners put their Gucci luggage?

3) I have an iPhone but unfornuately, it is a little small for some uses.

4) I have a MacBook Pro 17 and guess what! I can use Skype on it and I have never once tried to hold it to my head or put it in my back pocket.

Maybe (just try and follow me here - maybe read it a few times if you don't get it the first time) I could connect my Motorola H9HD bluetooth headset to an iPad and save looking like a C21 Dom Jolly.

But, hey! I'm not a good customer because I don't simply take what is on offer. I hope customer services are sending the iPad SS round to lynch all the Omnisphere users who are using their iPads as control surfaces!

And there's me thinking that market forces still applied. Sounds like we are living in a commercial dictatorship.

Anyway, I got my twopence worth in and got my head iceaxed for doing so. Bye bye.

After reading through the entire thread, I didn't see mentioned my two main reasons for also wanting this functionality.

1. A 3G "phone" with a decent battery life. My android phone, if left sleeping with 3G enabled, can barely make 12hours on a new battery. My ipad2 (also free gift) left sleeping with wifi on, connected to available wifi, can happily last 2-3 days.

2. Simply to have less devices. Like other posters, I don't hold my phone to my head to make calls (ruins the conversation recording app), so that argument is neither here nor there.

Unfortunately it seems most solutions listed so far only work in the little bit of the world called USA.

In response to a post that was added today, and apparently deleted: You do NOT have to jailbreak the iPad to use it to make phone calls.

You can use Talkatone plus Google Voice, or some other VoIP system, to make and receive phone calls. There are even systems like iCall that are ad-supported and allow outbound (but not inbound) calling. They work on both wifi and 3G units.

Omigod .... I skimmed through this thread and yes, it's true ... there actually are people out there who thought the iPad was also a phone and/or who are outraged to varying degrees to discover that it isn't? And in the case of one prototypical serial whiner, it has to be exactly in all respects identical to a phone that he already uses in order to spare him the agony printing new business cards? I mean, seriously .... is this meant to pass the giggle test, or what?

Benhelps, its just like an iPhone - it not only makes and recieves phone calls - but also SMSes and just like an iPhone you can select ringtones (including ones you bought from the iTunes store) and even allowed you to activate Facetime!! (on pre 5.0)

I know all this as it was on my iPad until I sold it on.

I now use a Galaxy Tab 7" which works like a phone by design.

I don't think it is a dumb question. I have even seen an ad where a man is using his iPad and in the process takes a call on it. If it isn't suppose to be one why all the phone settings in the settings menu. That is miss leading to someone looking at them in the store. If it isn't suppose to have phone capability then they should not have the settings there.

I use Skype to make and recieve calls. I have a 3g ipad and use it and a corded headset to make calls. The speakers on the Ipad works but not load enough. Skype is working on the bluetooth connection. I pay for the monthly service and phone number from skype. around $25 a month plus the AT&T 3g connection $30. Beats my old Iphone bill $150 a month.

Well count me as one of those people.

I suffer from ill health hence cant work and spend 99.9% of my time in my house.

I own a 7" Galaxy Tablet and have it on an Orange Contract. My wife has me as her magic number and I have her as mine. Hence we can contact each other as much as we like without spending a penny more.

For normal calls I use the land line.

I text my daughter all the time using my Orange inclusive texts on my tablet.

I've been after an ipad for a while now and my wife said she'd buy me one for my birthday. I was about to get the 64GB 4G presuming I could stick my Orange sim in it and carry on as I did while using my Galaxt Tablet.

But you find this assumption amusing?

I'm being 100% serious here, I was about to spend £659 on the 4G 64GB version tomorrow. The sole point of going for the 4G version rather than the wifi version was to use to make and recieve the odd call and to text my daughter.

It never occured to me for one sec that I wouldn't be able to make calls etc on it until I accidentally stumbled on someone else complaining about it and I searched more.

Yes you can make phone calls on all the iPads and iPhones without using the cell phone providers.

Wifi and data plan.

I use Skype to make phone calls.

I use wifi when available and data plan on my original iPad when wifi is not available.

You can call Skype contacts on wifi for free.

You can call Skype contacts on data plan at data plan costs only.

I used Skype when I lived in Honduras to call the USA for .02 cents a minute on a prepaid Skype plan on wifi. My best connection was at McDonalds in Honduras. Other countries use wireless wifi more due to the cost of hard lines being to expensive.

I use my iPad 1 as a phone 100% of the time. I don't have a phone service. I had the data plan and a cell phone at the same time. AT&T canceled my unlimited data plan on my cell phone and I canceled my phone service.

I have a Skype account with a unlimited plan and phone #.

As I travel around the world I always stay in hotels that have wifi. I receive calls free on wifi to a USA phone number and the caller does not know I'm not in the USA.

Skype is working on the issues of a Bluetooth headset connection that can be used on the iPad now. I use a wired headset now. But I have used the iPad without it. Just like the photo in this stream.

I use my iPhone 4 on wifi to call on Skype without cell service.

I am a avid apple fanatic and have used the iPad and iPhone (on wifi only) Since they came out. I bought 7 3g iPads the day they came out. Based on what the phone had done to change my way of doing international brokerage while in other countries. After my first trip to Honduras I quit bringing a laptop and conducted business with the first iPhone only. It is the best connection devise ever made and I am going to buy the new iPad because my ipad1 has no camera. I used and still use the camera on my non cellular iPhone. When I get the new iPad I will not need to take the iPhone.

The iPhone was the first apple product that I personally have used.

People that make hating comments just don't know how to use the product.

I understand I can use skype etc but thats not what I want.

Can I phone my wifes mobile/cell 4 or 5 times a day at no extra cost on skype? Can I text my daughters mobile/cell free of charge?

I already have an orange contract that I pay £13 a month for. This gives me unlimited text, a few hours a month worth of calls and 2GB data allowance. In addition to this, I get magic numbers where every 6 months I can add another Orange user to my magic number list and phone them up at zero cost. I'm happy paying this as I have data access should my internet go down and I can make and recieve calls to my wife at any time etc.

In the summer my son is also off to Uni and he will be added to my magic numbers by then and I can phone him as often as I want free of charge too.

I love what the ipad has to offer escpecially for the pro music apops which is the main reason I want one. I am however disappointed I cant simply use it like my Galaxy tablet, which is like any normal cell/mobile phone.

All I was saying was it simply didn't occur to me that if I payed the extra £100 to get the 4G version, I wouldn't be able to do this. It seems I'm not alone in this if I google this topic, 100s of people are asking the same thing.

I don't see people being haters when they complain that something they presumed would be available (and is in the competiton I have sitting beside me on the desk) not being there.

So I now have a choice. I wont be keeping the galaxy tablet when I get my ipad, I'm giving it to my daughter. I do however sometimes use the GPS on the Galaxy. I was happy paying the extra £100 for GPS and 4G thinking I could still make use of the orange contract I'm under.

Now I will be better off giving apple £100 less for the wi-fi version, buying a cheap £20 Samsung mobile/cell phone to put my Orange Sim in and spending £50 on a cheap sat nav for the few times I need one.

But that means, Apple has lost out on £100 and instead of having the one device I have now, it will be replaced by 3 different devices. This wont stop me buying the Ipad, I do want it, but having to replace one device with 3 different ones obviously isn't the best way forwards.
