HBO to go will not play video only audio on my apple tv

I just downloaded the HBO To Go App and when I hit the aiplay button I only hear the program but get no video. I know airplay works on my apple TV because youtube works perfectly.

My iphone software is up to date as well as apple tv.

How do you know it is a not a bug? Why is it playing audio? You would think if they wanted to block us from airplaying to Apple TV they wouldn't have the airplay icon in the app, and why would they let it just airplay the audio. That doesn't make sense to me. If letting just the audio airplay and not the video was something that they planned when they built the app they were setting up everyone with Apple TV to be very angry and disappointed with HBO.

it's not a bug because by default airplay allows audio to play, and requires no added support by the developer to do so.

if you want video to play you need to specifically add support for it.

it won't make sense to you as you most likely have no knowledge of iphone/ipad app development.

you'll find that HBO won't have stated that their app is appletv airplay compatible, so anyone who is angry and disappointed should be so with themselves for making false assumptions.

My daughter just tried to signup for HBO go and it is true that the cable provider checks to see if you have HBO. So there is no reason that they should *NOT* support AirPlay. It would be really great if they did.

well there may be contractual or legal reasons as to why it isn't supported.

the point is that no-one here will know, and it's not an apple issue so i suggest you all go and take it up with the app developers - as they are the only ones that can give you an answer.

I think it's a bug. I agree that they wouldn't taunt people by allowing the audio to work on AirPlay and not the video. They just would have blocked it entirely, like some other streaming apps I have.

audio airplay is NOT something that a developer adds. this is there by default as part of the iOS APIs.

any app that offers media that has been built using the iOS 4.3.x as the base firmware has this feature.

the other apps you have tried will have been built using an older version of iOS and thus won't have any airplay features.

video airplay however is something that has to be specifically added by the developer (on both apps and website). if the developer does not add it then all that is available is the default audio airplay.

the developer contact details will be listed in the itunes stores (this is a mandatory field when uploading an app).
