I just downloaded the HBO To Go App and when I hit the aiplay button I only hear the program but get no video. I know airplay works on my apple TV because youtube works perfectly.
My iphone software is up to date as well as apple tv.
I only can get audio to work between HBO Go and Apple TV as well

Maybe HBO has reinvented radio.
i'm sure i've answered this already, but i'll repeat myself for your benefit.
the app itself has to support airplay, so it is up to the developer of the app to add support for it.
your beef is with the app developer.
I'm having the same issue. HBO Go says that if you are having trouble with the app, you need to contact your cable provider. Doesn't make any sense.

I've been looking around and can't find any way to contact HBO about this. I think that the bottom line is that HBO intentionally does not support Airplay because they don't want to hurt the cable companies which is where they get paid.
Apparently they're willing to let you watch their stuff on your iPhone but not on your TV.
When I first heard of this I thought it was too good to be true. Well it is!

there's a difference between allowing your content to be viewed on a mobile device, and allowing it to be viewed on a TV.
Since I am paying extra for HBO you would think that HBO wouldn't care if I watched HBO To Go on my TV using Apple TV. What is the difference to them if I am watching on my phone, iPad, computer, or my TV. If this app did start working on Apple TV, then HBO might get more people to shell out the $15 for HBO. Maybe we should figure out who we can talk to at Apple? If this app starts working on Apple TV you would think more people would throw down the $99 for Apple TV.

it has nothing to do with apple.
the developers of the app and owners of the rights of the content are the only ones who can make it happen.
You need to be an HBO subscriber through your local cable provider to use the app. So the app doesn't threaten HBO or your cable provider's income stream. They don't compete. It's an extension of their services. Therefore, there's no reason that you shouldn't be able to watch on your television via AirPlay.
But why would you watch it through AirPlay on your Apple TV when you can already watch it on your TV through your cable?
HBO To Go has every episode of all of their series and about 200 movies. ATT Uverse only has a few movies and just a small selection of series episodes on demand.
Yeah-And it's easier to browse and play, etc...Even though it's only a matter of seconds. I hope that this is just a bug and there's a fix coming, because this could be a rockin' app.
Are you sure that you need to be an HBO subscriber and not just a cable TV subscriber? When I registered I don't remember establishing that I had HBO. Of course it would be possible for my cable provider to do the check but I don't think they're smart enough to do it.
