I had hoped to be able to tether my iPad 2 to a TV via the Digital AV Adapter that has the HDMI adapter and watch HBO GO. But it appears that the app blocks my ability to do this (other apps like You Tube and Crackle work). Is there any other way to tether the iPad2 to my TV so that I can play HBO GO on my TV?

Doesn't work for me. I've tried it both ways.
Open up the app and touch the gear thingy. Then touch Help followed by Technical Questions. Touch the third question down "Can I connect my mobile device to my TV and watch HBO GO?"
You will quickly see "No, currently an external connection from a mobile device to a TV is not supported."
Does that give you a hint?
It works fine for me. I make sure HBO GO is not running on my iPad. I connect my iPad with my HDMI connector (plain one bought from the apple store). Turn on my receiver. Then start HBO GO
Why do it? My content provider doesn't have True Blood Season 1 on demand and I haven't seen it, but heard it's good. Now I can watch it in our theater room with the wife.

I plugged my AV adapter yestrday, and the same thing happened to me; nice HBO GO logo, but no action. I hsve DirecTV, and I'm puzzled by the lack of support to enable the bright, simple function. Keep in mind, DirecTV doesn't really have a functioning 'on demand' service that cable offers...bummer!
Go figure. The app developer says that it's not supported. Would that make you expect it to function?

i don't know how, but I can get this working occasionally by "playing with it." It seems this should work or it should not work. I have an ipad 2 with hdmi (apple) output. No jailbreak or anything special. Sometimes it works, and someitmes I only get sound with the HBO logo. I don't know if it is a specific order I am plugging things in or what. Can't believe that there is no published workaround for this since it does work sometimes for some people.
i tried hbo go. got audio from surround sound when hooked up to reciever but no video. when i plugged it into my tv directly, i got audio and video but from tv speakers. is there a way to get sound from surround speakers? if not im just about to return this useless 4 inch wire
Here's a solution (for Comcast/Xfinity subscribers) that no one has mentioned. The Comcast (Xfinity) iPad app has all the same HBO GO content...and works perfectly on my Sony HDTV via iPad 2 HDMI out. And note that the straight-up HBO Go app is blocked, as mentioned by others on here!
Funny, the Comcast app even has the "HBO GO"splash at the start of every video...but it works!!
I posted earlier but I didn't give enough details of how it works for me. I watch HOBO GO on my iPad everynight with no problem, plugged into my reciever in my theater room with no extra stuff except the HDMI adapter I got from Apple.
Here are my steps:
1. Plug in iPad using the Apple HDMI adapter (which is already attach to my reciever via an HDMI cable)
2. Launch HBO GO and find what I want to watch on the iPad and make sure iPad view is horizontal.
3. Close HBO GO using the iPad Home hey
4. Rotate through input source of my reciever till I get back to my HDMI input (example: my source is HDMI 2. I keep clicking HDMI input till I get back to HDMI 2).
5. Wait till I can see my iPad desktop on my TV screen
6. Click HBO GO
7. BOOM! Audio & Video are on my TV screen. Click play on the iPad and enjoy!
Works every time! Not supported != Not available.
Equipment:
HDMI adapter from Apple
Cheap HDMI cable from Wal-Mart
Receiver: Pioneer VSX-1120-K
Reason Why I do It: My local cable provider does not allow me to view earlier versions of certain series from HBO, but HBO GO seems to have it all.
Jarlitz, your method worked. Have you been able to get widescreen output or just 4:3? I'm only able to get 4:3. I have the video out setting set to widescreen, but still no luck. Netflix works widescreen, no problem. Any thoughts?
