Playing HBO GO from iPad 2 on TV

I had hoped to be able to tether my iPad 2 to a TV via the Digital AV Adapter that has the HDMI adapter and watch HBO GO. But it appears that the app blocks my ability to do this (other apps like You Tube and Crackle work). Is there any other way to tether the iPad2 to my TV so that I can play HBO GO on my TV?

Why don't you plug the cable right into your TV?

3 legitimate reason that I can think of...

1. Traveling outside his home

2. Access HBO on another TV in the home that is not on his UVerse

Not legit. That's a way to cheat the cable company out of the monthly rental for the decoder box.

3. Watching older HBO content that is not available on HBO live broadcasts, but is on HBO Go

Not legit. HBO has made it very obvious that you're not paying to see it on a television.

Philly,

You have a valid point about..

...2. Access HBO on another TV in the home that is not on his UVerse...

That's what HBO Go is really for IF the person also subscribes to regular HBO.

Certainly legit.

If you had mentioned in your post that you wanted to view older HBO content on your regular I wouldn't have commented. I wasn't the only one who wondered why you just didn't plug in UVerse.

And yes, unless you have some equipment problem, you can plumb HBO Go from your laptop to your big screen. I just did it last night as a test. You have to use or at least should use the Thunderbolt dongle to an HDMI cable. I guess if your TV doesn't have a spare HDMI port, you could use a VGA dongle.

I sure you know there is no AirPlay option yet for laptops and even if there was, you would then also need an ATV2 or ATV3. The last time I checked you can also NOT use AirPlay from a iPad or an IP (again, an ATV is also required). If you try that method, either the sound or the video doesn't Airplay because HBO doesn't allow it with their iPad or IP app. Probably concerns about theft of service whereas they can't controll "mirroring".

Wrong. The HBO.go app on the Roku allows you to watch all their offereing on your TV in HD. So the fact that you cannot do this on an AppleTV, is more indicative of a problem between Apple and HBO from my perspective. This is really **** poor. Apple should not approve any apps that do not stream to the AppleTV--after all, they claim that you can stream to your TV anything that appears on your devices's screen. This is nothing short of false advertising!

The problem is that you don't usually find out about these sorts of "got you" details until after you bought the product. If you can send to the AppleTV wirelessly just about everything else, why would an unsuspecting buyer even have reason to think that this isn't the case with HBO.Go?

The ads definitely give you the impression that if it's shown on an Apple device you can wirelessly project it to your TV using the AppleTV. Perhaps you can't see that because of all the Apple Koolaide you've been drinking...

Now that I've personally used both the AppleTV and the Roku, I can categorically say that the Roku kicks AppleTV's behind when it comes to apps that run on the Roku platform and content. Where AppleTV holds a major advantage is the ability to project video and sound wirelessly, but that advantage is minimized when Apple allows apps like HBO.Go to cripple that feature.

Prospective purchasers can easily browse these forums to investigate a product prior to purchase. Admittedly, not everyone properly investigates. However, they do have the option of returning the product for a full refund rather than coming here to whine.

So pointing out that the following statement that was posted in the forum was wrong, now constitutes whining? You sure have a strange concept of what whining is all about...

As I pointed out previously, that's not the case, as the HBO.Go app for the Roku allows you to project their entire library content on your TV in HD. There's something going on between Apple and HBO that doesn't pass the smell test. And that's not whining, it's a fact...

I've used more Apple products than I bet you can even think of. Pointing out critical shortcomings is not whining.

Who's appointed you forum ruler? If you don't like my posts no one is forcing you to reply to them. Sounds to me that you're getting low on that Apple Koolaide and you're going through withdrawals.

That's it, I'm done here. I have an otherwise happy life...

I always thought HBOGo was blocking AirPlay mirroing because they didn't want people to use it on a regular TV, but now I can't explain it as the Roku and now the xbox can do it.

Now its just starting to smell like Apple doesn't want to cannabilize their iTunes revenue so they forced the block..?
