Playing HBO GO from iPad 2 on TV

My rant is that I should be able to watch HBO Go via Airplay on Apple TV, either via my I Pad or even better as an App on Apple TV. Roku has it, X Box is getting it so why shouldn't Apple TV customers get it. I apologize for my run on sentence in my previous post but I didn't realize that the people that would be reading this were grammar teachers. Apple's stock is trading at over $600 a share, so I think they can afford to lose some revenue from people streaming HBO Go through Apple Products that they've paid alot of money for. I find it quite funny that Apple was trying to figure out what to do with all the money that they have? Well here's an idea, use some of the money to pay off HBO, Hulu and the NFL so we can stream more content through Apple TV. It's pretty apparent that Apple TV owners see it as a little more than just a side project, so Apple should buck up and start treating it that way too. While Apple's at it they should reduce some the cost of some of their content. Why does it cost $4.99 to rent a movie? Apple is making a ton of money, not only off their products but the fact that their products, once in a customers hands continue to generate multitudes of revenue for them. Someone else on here caught some slack for mentioning Cydia or hacked content. Personally I don't have my I Phone 4S or my I Pad 2 jailbroken, but at the same time I can't say I blame anyone that does because if the prices for Apps and just about everything else from Apple and it's 3rd party companies can be incredibly expensive.

Should? There is no entitlement guarranting this. The HBO App is an HBO product written for Apple mobile devices.

The price of Apple stock is totally irrelevant. I doubt that Apple gets a penny from streaming HBO content via HBO Go. Apple does get money from people buying or renting HBO content after seeing a taste of it on HBO Go.

I find it quite funny that Apple was trying to figure out what to do with all the money that they have? Well here's an idea, use some of the money to pay off HBO, Hulu and the NFL so we can stream more content through Apple TV.

This is just to silly to really comment on, but I’ll give it a try. As an Apple stockholder (very small) I would certainly vote against any Board Member who came up with such a ridiculous plan. On the other hand, free NFL Sunday Ticket? Well, maybe I’ll go along with that. :

Are you from Venus? Five dollars is around the defacto price for renting any digital movie from ANY source. Apple’s share is 30% or around $1.50. The studio that owns the film gets the rest. Also, IF Apple went along with your ridiculous plan, it would probably be a violation of the antitrust laws (in effect, driving everyone else out of the rental business.) AFAIK, Apple gets 30% of everything that comes through iTunes and the actual owners of the content, be they games, movies, music, etc get the other 70%.

If you don’t like paying $5, trot down to Safeway and get a Red Box movie for a buck. Ride your bike so you don’t end up burning a gas on the way.

You're absolutely correct. Everything in the world should be totally free. No one should ever be required to pay anything for any product or any service. Apple should give away iPads and iPods and iPhones and iMacs. Doctors should perform surgeries without compensation. General Motors and the other manufacturers should give their cars away and, of course, gasoline should be free.

You're an i****. $5 to rent a movie is outrageous. Have you heard of Redbox? Also I'm fine with paying for an NFL game, I just want it through Apple TV. On a side note HBO Go is now available on XBOX live, which I have. Problem solved.

I said I wouldn't be back on this thread, but your response above deserves an answer. Five dollars is NOT outrageous for a rental of a current movie that was just released. That's what Blockbuster, Amazon, Apple and others charge. I'm referring to films that are made for people beyond the 9th grade. Red Box may have those movies in about 5 years.

Or you can go for one of their regular releases like "Bubba does Europe". On a further note, if you can follow the math, I live about 10 miles from the nearest Red Box. That's about 20 miles RT. My car MAY get 20 MPG. Gas is now over $4 a gallon. So, my question is "How much does it really cost to rent a "Bubba" movie from Red Box? Hint, they get cheaper in volume.

Lets keep the discussion focused at, "Hey Apple! You are robbing your customers until you sign agreements with content partners"

The price of itunes rentals, redbox or what date they get their content is not as important to those following this thread. We want to understand why we don't have HBOGo, ESPN3, et all like other streaming devices.

HBO subscribers are still at the mercy of the programming schedule on their TV. If they want to catch up on a series, they have to buy the blu ray, or watch it on a mobile screen. Roku is the only other option besides hooking the PC directly up to the TV. You want to catch up on, or start watching a show that's not on right now would be the use case.

Not totally true. HBO Go runs fine from my MBA via HDMI and I assume probably from any Windows laptop as well (if there is a HDMI output port). For those with ATV, they can also buy many HBO original series directly.

For the time being, the HBO Go App (for mobile devices only) does NOT AirPlay. I for one think HBO Go is a HUGE step forward by HBO to allow theIr PAYING customers to watch HBO on their mobile devices.

I believe the ONLY reason they are not presently allowing AirPlay is for the threat of theft of services. IF AirPlay was available, ANYONE with a buddy who supplied their password could get a free ride to watch HBO on the big screen for free. What to you really think that would do to their subscriber list? As the matter stand right now, those "friend" can get a free ride with a loaned password.

Unless HBO just wants to throw in the towel or take a chance on view honesty, it seem the only path to AirPlay would be for HBO to register mobile devices just like the banks register computers to allow access. With only or two devices registered, HBO subscribers are not likely to pass out passwords to buddies.

I think HBO Go is a great addition to my HBO subscription. I've seen blogs where people have asked the password so that they can SHARE the account. Don't bother asking for my HBO password.

What is "robbing your customers" supposed to mean? I doubt that Apple gets one penny from what you can stream from HBO Go (which is a FREE HBO written app). Thirty percent of nothing is nothing.

Further responses here are a waste of internet throughput to the "entitlement" crowd that hangs here. The whole issue in this thread should be directed to HBO.com. I'm departing for sure by cancelling ANY further notification to this thread.

It says on the splash screen very explicitly that it ('it' meaning HBO Go) does not work with 'this accessory' right now. Note it the 'right now' suggests that they may be developing this capability. Yeah - I agree. Uh.. They've had plenty of time to get 'with the program' (I.e., hello - we're already on a 3rd rev of the iPad and you still haven't gotten this together?). Having same problem here with Showtime and I agree with others re all the reasons why such capability is needed. I take my subscription with me everywhere but everywhere does not necessarily have a device upon which my subscription is usable thus.. viewing content on my iPad on the TV in my hotel room is impossible until HBO and Showtime get smarter and get to work here fixing this oversight.

I'm a TiVo user and don't have access to the provider's On Demand. Your condescending tone is not at all helpful here. Someoen asked for the use case of HBO Go on the TV and not on a portable device, this was the answer.
