I had hoped to be able to tether my iPad 2 to a TV via the Digital AV Adapter that has the HDMI adapter and watch HBO GO.  But it appears that the app blocks my ability to do this (other apps like You Tube and Crackle work).  Is there any other way to tether the iPad2 to my TV so that I can play HBO GO on my TV?

Apparently HBO does not allow it, so there is no way around it.

It works for me if I have the digital AV adapter connected and working before I start the HBO GO app.

Does not work on my brand new iPad 2 with the HDMI adaptor, no matter if I have HDMI working ahead of time or not.  Only get the HBO Go logo on the TV

I am confused. They provide an app to use with wifi or 3G and you have to hook it up to a tv? What? Where is their support? Clicked on App Support tab on hbogo’s iTunes page and there is nothing. No support. I don’t get it. AirPlay? Why 3G? What’s the use? I can just go to HBO on demand.

Can anyone give me a contact or support?  What is this app for on an ipad?  Thx!

I second your confusion! what is the point of trying to get this on a tv, only hbo subscribers are eligible to view so they would already have hbo on their tv, the app is just to have it on the go on the ipad as well....or am I missing something?

This works without hob on demand which is not usable by those of us with tivos.  This just requires a normal hbo subscription.  It plays on the iPad or iPhone, we'd just like to stream to tv for some of the content that we cannot get otherwise.

An example is if you are traveling at a hotel or at a friends house that does not have HBO you could watch HBO from your iPad and display it on the TV.  This is also nice if their is more than one or two people that want to watch the movie.  Sitting around the iPad with a group of three or more can become difficult.  Also, even in your own house or garage, etc. If you want to project an HBO movie on a TV or projector in a room that you don't currently have a connection to your regular cable or satellite feed.

So... Why is there no sound from my ipad?   Only sound from my iPhone?

  • podisc Level 1 (0 points)

And btw.... Checked my sound settings.  All sounds are on.   And where is the support for this app?  It's practically nothing in tech support....which by the way, is not visible from an ipad!!    Lol.    Now isn't that dumb?

I too am baffeled by the lack of support for this app. When I heard about the app I immediately picked it up for my iPad 2 and instantly fell in love with all that it offered. Initially it had not occured to me that I could use airplay to stream the content to my apple tv. I recently discovered this viewing possibility through the frustration of not being able to play on my 27" iMac. I found that I could pull them up on my iPad and a few taps later have it streaming to my 42" plasma instead. Granted it doesn't solve the original problem but it is a great work around. However when I look at the missed functionality advantage with the HBO Go app and airplay I really think HBO or Apple need to address this as I'm not sure if this is problem with Airplay or with the app itself.

As of today I'm running iOS 4.3.2 on my iPad2 and attempting to stream it to my AppleTV running the latest update of 4.2.2 which cited some video playing fixes ( ple-tv/) When I start video content as long as my AppleTV isn't 'in use' by another app on my network it shows up as an option from the video player. However after selecting it ONLY the audio is available through the apple tv. When I read the fix notes for the AppleTV 4.2.2 release it cited some fixes that sound like they would fix this. However I've updated my device and still no joy.

I think this in general that the HBO GO app is really going to define the future of the industry in media/content enjoyment. I think consumers (like myself) whom are already subscribing to the content via their cable provider should be able to stream it to their computers, tablets, and mobile devices. The added function of being able to stream it to an AppleTV or output it from an HDMI cable from an iPad2 is a VERY logical function. ROCKDQG 's comments above really give multiple examples of just how flexible of a solution this provides a paid subscriber.

So if its HBO thats blocking the output I think they really have to look long and hard at their decision and reconsider it. If this issue is the result of a bug still within the OS of the AppleTV or iPad or possibly even Airplay then I'm confident Apple will work that out in short order. I only ask that no matter where the 'disconnect' lies HBO or Apple that someone posts something to the public about it and set our expectations.

A lot of people don't understand why you would need to put something from hbo go on you TV.  There are several reasons, perhaps you missed an episode of a series, or the documentary you want to watch now, isn't on again till next week.  Most recently, the game of thrones released next weeks episode early for hbo go, so wanting to watch it immediately on the tv is the best option for the whole family instead of crowding around the ipad.  I just tested the work around and wanted to say it doesn't work for me.  Would you please clarify when you say the original digital AV adapter?  I assume you mean the official apple HDMI adapter, which I have.  I made sure HBO GO isn't running at all, plug in my adapter, and my springboard shows up on my tv.  I started HBO GO and all I got was the HBO GO splash screen.  Please tell me what I am missing, unless it is FW related, I am still running 4.3.

    thanks in advance!

Another reason streaming to the TV would be useful is for those who subscribe to HBO through DISH network, which has little or no "on demand" functionality. Were this to work, it would totally solve that problem. Perhaps, however, DISH pays less to HBO because of it having no "on demand" to speak of, and HBO does not, due to that, want DISH users to have full "on demand" functionality. I never watched the last season of Soprano's, so I  tried with my 3GS iPhone video adapter cable the day after HBOGO came out, sound worked, no image.

When I try to stream to my TV, using the cables (not HDMI) I get the logo and sound, but no video?

I had this issue as well. However, I was able to get it to work on my TV one night so I know it does work. I just tried hooking it up to the TV again and just got the HBO GO logo. So I plugged the iPad out of the Apple HDMI AV connector, plugged it back in, fired up a few other apps to make sure the connection worked and then I tried HBO GO again and it worked. You gotta play around with it...
