Resetting and restoring did not help. Is there a solution to this problem?

Vaccum cleaner should fix the problem as described for me TOO!!!!!

Prepare next step's:

1. install from appstore free software http://itunes.apple.com/ru/app/quickvoice-recorder/id284675296?mt=8

Why? in this app you CAN see current mic level, when you will try to record any voice.

from my case, for example, with "DIRT microphone" level was max about 1/3 of possible scale.....

2. then you must Use home vacuum cleaner for about 2-3 minutes for suction dust from microphon area in IPAD2

3. Then check rec level again.

4. Solved!!!!!!!

p.s. app need only for visual compare before and after cleaning. You must use another app for your choice, of cource!

I had the very same problem with my white 16gb wifi version. Went to Apple stored today and got a replacement right away. It seems some other have the same issue (from seeing other posts). Not sure if this is a widespread hardware defects or a software issue. At least the store staff are very helpful to resolve it!

This problem is now apparent on my White iPad2 3g 64gb.

It worked fine when I first got it, now all I get is very bad static!

Very annoying as I only found out after filming a very important two hour presentation over the weekened, only to find out that I had good quality video but just horrible static for the audio!

I have made an appointment with the Apple Store for them to fix it. I just hope they dont replace it with one that has the screen (light leakage) problem!

Sigh, sometimes I wonder if some of the Apple critics (Thos die hard Windows users) have a point when it comes to Apple reliability.....

My mic has worked since I purchased my ipad2 about 2 months ago from using FaceTime regularly. Updated last week and tried Skype test call today and it's just static recording. Also tried FaceTime and recording from the camera and it's the same static with no audio. I want to avoid taking it back to Apple as it is a long drive to my nearest store. Was it the update? Is it a hardware problem? Gutted really as it was going so well and I couldn't live without it waiting for a replacement. I had to wait 3 weeks to get this one after ordering it! Any ideas??

Ok, so i tried a complete ipad restore which didnt rectify the mic problem. Tried blowing out the mic with compressed air which did help slightly but recording is still very quiet and have to shout for it to pick up my voice. I eventually decided to take it to an apple store which was an hour drive away from my home. They were very good in store and am now waiting for my new one to be delivered which should be between 1 and 2 weeks. Not ideal i know but as long as the new one is functioning correctly im not too concerned. If you are experiencing this problem, get it back to the store and get it swapped as soon as you can. It also has nothing to do with the magnetic strips on the smart cover as i have never used the smart cover. It is purely faulty and at the fault of apple so there will be no problem obtaining a new replacement.

Ipad2 replaced unit. Wifi 64gb.

Sound both audio and recording worked amazing. Then ipad2 recently updated and only static and low audible voice on voice memo recordings. Skype has video but anyone connected cannot hear me. FaceTime likewise.

I really hope I do not need to trade this is again!!!!! I will not be impressed!!! Was it a bad batch with a hardware problem? Should there be a recall? I have seen many blogs and posts about no microphone for various apps. So it is not Skype isolated.

Please give me any insight. And same as other posts ... Resetting and hard resetting do not resolve the problem. Neither do installing or uninstalling the apps that need the recorder.

HELP!!!!!!

I received my replacement ipad2 2 weeks ago but haven't updated it to 4.3.5 but kept with the original iOS ands so far mic has been fine. I did the blowing and compressed air on my iPad before I took it back which did clear it up temporarily but wasn't really acceptable considering I paid nigh on 450 pounds for it, and it kept returning to very quiet or no sound pickup at all after a few days. Anyway I've had no issues with the new one in the 2 weeks I've had it but time will tell if it is the mic gathering dust. Will post again in a few weeks if it all goes wrong again but I really don't think that a product of this magnitude should let a little dust affect it's functionality.

I used can of air to clear the microphone (which is right above the camera) as suggested by one of the users here and it actually worked. It's strange because I just got my iPad and I am fairly sure it was not working right from the beginning. You may want to try that, since it's less hassle than to replace the whole device. Hope this helps!

Hey Darren,

Im not sure how this solved the problem, but I upgraded to iOS5 and a small blast of compressed air and presto. We're back in business. Works great!! Unfortunately the camera still BLOWS!

Good luck. When you upgrade to iOS5 you lose apps but when you sign into the app store there's a new button next to "updates" called "purchased" that will quickly allow you to redo load all your apps. Won't take too long either just need to reorganize your folders. If you had any to begin with.

Let me know if this helps at all.

Happy Holidays,

I have a slightly different solution to this issue. I blew into the mic, slightly resolved the issue but it wouldn't pic up sounds clearly. So i pulled out my dyson vacuum and stuck it right at the mic opening. Vacuumed it for a few seconds. Pulled it off, recorded a video and what do you know, works as good as new....

Dec 28, 2011 4:24 PM in response to MasterPo

I had the same problem. I tried blowing with no result. I vacuumed and that fixed it. Something must have gotten into the tiny mic hole.

I recommend vacuum over blowing since I can't imagine how whatever got it would get out by blowing. Any vacumm could work, just, reduce the aperture of the vacuum nozzle as much as possible for maximum effect.

Hope this helps.
