Installing XP on new iMac(2011)?

I just bought the new iMac and wanted to install my old XP on it. But when I run Boot Camp Assistant, it only provides support for Win7. Is it possible to use an older version of BCA to install XP again? And if so, where can I find a compatible previous version?

Thanks for any help!

Egaille,

Inspired by your example I got a sandy bridge MacBook Pro 13" (rather than an older version) and managed to install Win XP on it.

In addition to your package I had to find a graphics driver for the integrated Intel 3000 graphics.

Now the graphics works fine and I can run RAW shooter Essential and ACDSee (the main reason for XP).

However there are still a couple of minor issues. I feel that the touch pad is not fully supported, e.g. can't get it to right click via ctrl or such.

Another is there's no sound or wi-fi, the camera works fine though. Do you know where would I go for sound support? Intel? Thanks, SD

2 questions:
- How many hardwares don't work in the control panel?

- What are their names (in windows control panel)?

Maybe you have to force the install (if the hardware id doesn't match the driver's information in the .inf file).

To force the install:

1) right-click on the yellow marked hardware

2) select "update driver"

3) "not now" (radio button number 3)

4) install from a list (number 2)

5) "don't search, i'll choose the driver by myself" (last)

6) select disk (browse to the driver directory).

7) next and finish (you may get warnings).

carefull ! you need to point the right driver for the right hardware:

Atheros driver is for wifi (network adapter).

Cirrus logic driver is for the audio.

Thanks for the quick reply.

When I follow you instructions it starts installing, but it keeps giving an error:

"Cannot install this hardware

There was a problem installing this hardware:

Cirrus Logic CS4206A (AB 32)

An error occured during the installation of the device

The parameter is incorrect."

And the same with the wifi network adapter:

"Cannot install this hardware

There was a problem installing this hardware:

Network Controller

An error occured during the installation of the device

The parameter is incorrect."

What am I doing wrong?

maybe you could try in safe mode.

- Reboot the mac
- Press Alt to choose Windows

- Immediately press F8 before the splash screen
- Choose "Safe mode"
- Try the install again

If it still doesn't work, it is either a problem of hardware change, or a problem of windows version.

My XP CD installer is SP3... for the hardware change, the ways of Apple are inscrutable 😠 ... Try what i asked to Vaskelovo in my previous post, and tell me if you get a name, or a brand, or something.

I see the file but when I point it and press the OK button it gives me the same error message before finishing the installer:

"Cannot install this hardware

There was a problem installing this hardware:

Cirrus Logic CS4206A (AB 32)

An error occured during the installation of the device

The parameter is incorrect."

I'm doing it exactly like you said... what should I do?

Is there a way to reset the process? And try starting over?

hi nicoreme,

For the imac 2011 21.5", the drivers are certainly different.
You can try. It may work for some hardware.

For the knowledge:

- Bootcamp 3.0 + 3.1 + 3.2 provide XP / VISTA / 7 (?) drivers for every imac With Core2 Duo / Quad processors (before 2010)
- Bootcamp 4 provides 7 drivers only.

Unfortunately i don't have any 21.5" 2011 imac to look for drivers.

under Lion, if you can provide the name and tech info of every hardware that is not installed under XP, i may be able to help you... (read the current thread to get more informations)

regards

First thing, install Bootcamp 3.0 and updates 3.1 and 3.2

After, from what i can see, you may try to install some drivers from my archive:

- chipset sandy bridge (dble click on infinst_autol.exe)
- facetime camera HD: Try manual install by pointing to the directory (i'm pretty sure it's the same hardware).

- the audio may install also fine...

- the hdmi audio is part of the graphics card and whould also install. Try manual install by pointing to the directory.

also you could try manual install on the LAN and WLAN adapters ("ethernet" and "controller di rete")

After that, the idea is to try every unknown hardware with every driver remaininig : right click > update pilot > choose by yourself > browse and point to each driver directory. If XP recognizes a compatible driver, it will install it.

Once you have tried every hardware remaining with every driver remaining,

- tell me what's remaining

- please click on "resoconto di sistema" under LION and paste the informations here.

We need more info about your hardware (graphics card, etc).

Ok, but i can't find bootcamp 3.0. I only found the 3.1 and 3.2 update. I read in the other discussions that it's in the snow leopard DVD, but when i mount it, windowsxp tell me that windows 7 is required to install bootcamp.

Is bootcamp 3 and 3.1 and 3.2 necessary? The only peripherals that i need is:

chipset

audio system (what's is HDMI audio? It works in winxp? 😕)

VGA system

LAN

The other peripherals are not necessary for me:

bluetooth

facetime HD

Wi-fi

Yesterday i sucessfully installed chipset and LAN. After that I'm stopped because i couldn't install the audio system. I think that the PCI-Device that you see in this picture http://i42.tinypic.com/282qmn4.jpg is the audio system.

Sorry for my bad english... I'm italian 😉

You can get Bootcamp 3.0 on the OSX 10.6 CD.

If you don't have the 10.6 CD, you can download bootcamp 3 here.

http://filetram.com/rapidshare/bootcamp-mac-drivers-3-0-for-windows-rar-58227708 13

(click on "download with waiting" for each link). Total 1gb.

BTW, I have updated my archive with a new driver for a Memory Stick reader that my XP suddenly found (i think it's a new hardware created after a bios update)... http://egaille.free.fr/imac27
