What program(s) are you trying to do this from?

barney. thanks.

on this post i am trying to find a tool to AUTOMATICALLY put file names and or paths on my printed documents. the utility for this in a medium to large office is blindingly obvious and not having it incurs innumerable man hours and confusion. it should be implemented in the next OS unless printing with mac is so hacked together it cannot possibly be done.

not being able to set DEFAULTS exhibits the same kind of total disregard for pro and office users. i should be able to print in two steps for the majority of my docs not five to ten. this is a NIGHTMARE for business use.

BTW, i would /love/ for someone to get on here and show me how to add a numbers and or acrobat print preset for my 11x17 and 12x18 inch docs. this requires ten steps every single time i have to print a doc with no clear way to setup a preset.

considering i spent a year and a half just figuring out how to HACK my way through this multi-factorial rubiks cube - with the final step being manually moving thevtrays to get it to work?????!!!!! - not having the ability to set a preset in lieu of ten darn steps to just print a doc is a BUMMER.

so /factual/ info. on how to get this working would be great. i don't have another year and a half to spendbon this...

I'm not talking about setting them as Default, but as Presets to choose from in the Presets list.

Set up the print dialog like you want and save the settings with a name you can choose.

The Auto-rotate checkbox in Preview doesn't seem to be controlled by the printing Presets.

It appears to be a purely Preview option, but I didn't see (or find) any hiddent preferences in Preview.

I found this that I didn't know about: http://frightanic.com/apple-mac/modify-the-default-i-e-standard-printer-presets- in-os-x/

That was from 2010, so it is likely available in the Snow Leopard version of CUPS.

Your particular printer driver may only offer a few options.

My Epson NX530 had about 6 settings. My R260 had over a dozen.

The Gutenprint drivers may offer more options, if they work with your printer, and work as you need. Last time I used one it just plopped a big mess of settings on one screen, so that may make if more comfortable for you.

Did you ever find the settings for enabling your additional print trays? It should be on the Driver tab of the Options & Supplies settings. That's where I remember it for my old HP Color Laserjet.

hi barney.

thanks for the help here. it is much appreciated.

i guess my point on the default options is that it would be nice if mac would be kind enough to let me set these defaults per my preferences. first there was a way to do this in Terminal (not so convenient for most users), then it was possible to set this in CUPS (and then it wasn't apparently) and now it is not possible to set at all. and i have only been back on the mac for four or five years now.

99% of the time i just want to print to my default settings and if i could set these i would use the presets as presets. using a simple preset would be a /whole/ lot easier than clicking through to get to the Presets and then having to select one of these from a pulldown menu where i have set up fifteen of these on each of my machines for the rare cases when i use them (i took the time to set them up because it would take AGES to find all the settings again for a one shot print....). i mean, the point of having defaults is because this is what i use 99% of the time. it is mind-boggling to me why i have to manage something as simple as printing to an 8 1/2 x 11 inch sheet of paper at least six different ways depending on which software i am printing from (acrobat, numbers, preview, pages, photoshop etcetera etcetera). if they could /just/ give me control of my default settings for Preview and Numbers with respect to NOT ROTATING and NOT SCALING this would be a great reduction in the time i spend printing, not to mention my clicks which absolutely kill during a normal workday.

also, it would be great to figure out how to save my presets for my WF 7520 when i need to go to 11 x 17 or 12 x 18. it is absolutely excruciating to have to do 8 - 10 different tabs, pulldowns, checkboxes etcetera etcetera to get these printed simply because i cannot find a way to set a PRESET.

this means in some software i can set presets but i cannot set the defaults and in other software i can't figure out how to save a preset and i also can't set the defaults. this is inexusable.

can i just ask you about this business about activating an additional paper tray? i checked in the Printer settings in Preferences and i didn't see anything. i mean, it is an interesting idea that i might have to activate an additional paper tray and if this is in fact the case this alone would keep me from getting up from my computer and switching out paper trays to print.

lol. i mean, between manually changing paper trays and thinking about switching over to the "Gutenprint" drivers i feel like mac has given me printing options from the stone ages!

hi barney. again a big thanks for this.

i am seeing that there is a "Optional Paper Input Tray" checkbox that i can check in Preferences > Print and Fax > (select HP 8600 All in One) > Options and Supplies > Driver Tab (sigh) - however - when i get in the same spot with my Epson WF 7520 (which also has two trays and which i would like to print to two trays...) that i do not have the same checkbox option.

that said, if i think about this a little bit i don't think i have ever actually printed to the second tray on the 8600 and in looking here again i am not really even sure where i am supposed to be finding this option. is there a specific place say in Preview or in Pages that i should find an option to print on the (apparently) enabled second tray on the 8600?

is there somewhere else (perhaps i should redownload the driver) i should check for an ability to /enable/ this option on the Epson?

not to beat a dead horse here but if i cannot even FIND a place where i should be able to select the second tray this says /something/ (not good) about the mac printer dialogs and functionality IMHO. honestly i think i get better print options out of iOS7 than i do on my two macs running Lion and Mavericks respectively....

Media (Paper Type)/Quality or Paper Handling would be my guess.

For your WF 7520, Print Settings.

Take a look here: User's Guide (HTML Version)

Loading Paper > Setting the Paper Size for Each Source

Printing From a Computer > Selecting Basic print Settings Mac OS X 10.5/10.6/10.7

Nov 13, 2013 5:36 PM in response to Barney-15E

man. dude. thanks.

i found a "Feed From" at least in Mavericks out of Safari in Media pulldown. this has a "Auto", "Main Tray" and "Alternate Tray".

presumably Main Tray is set when i set the default somewhere for the Tray 1 / Slot 1. Alternate is the other tray when i select the alternate presumably but do you know how Auto is supposed to function? is it supposed to somehow be dependent upon the size of the paper in the software i am using?

i will keep looking toward smoothing this out as your help has been awesome. i do wish things like paper tray or scaling or rotation or paper size could be on the same (front) page at all times so i didn't always have to go hunting for these in different places.
