Why can I not be kept 'signed in'?

For a number of years now, it has been a real pain having to login every time I come to these forums. Other forums I use have the usual 'keep me logged in' option. Why does it not work that way here? I thought that with the recent format change, that issue would have gone, but no.

Once you have logged in you stay logged in until you close Safari or other browser.

We have never been able to log in automatically on the Apple forums - for security reasons.

Well, no amount of ranting will change it!

In my case, you are not correct about remaining logged in until I close Safari. If I am logged in, and move to other sites, after a while I am no longer logged in. If I respond to an email notification from these forums, I find I have to re-login, even if I haven't closed Safari down.

You case appears to be unique. It was true when these new forums were first started, but was corected a couple of months ago.

If your password is in your Keychain, and you don't delete cookies from Apple, you will stay logged in.

Sorry, just noticed the 'rant' reference. Do you seriously consider what I said to be a rant? Does expressing an opinion constitute a rant now? Wow!

Several people here have expressed their opinion a lot stronger than me, yet you haven't criticised them. I'm confused, and if I was at all paranoid.........

Oh well.

Having to log every hour on the hour when these new forums first opened was a continual complaint by most if not all users.

Eventually the Hosts successfully managed to adjust the new Jive software (that runs the forums) to stop that happening. I have remained logged in for the past 14 hours even though, for two thirds of that time, my Mac has been asleep.

I cannot offer a rational explanation of why this doesn't work for you, but there is one thing I can suggest you can try (as long as you can remember your password to the forums): delete all cookies to do with Apple, and delete the keychain entry, as well as your History. Close Safari and re-open. Type in the URL for the forums, your ID and password, and thereby set up fresh cookies and keychain entry.

Stay connected for a few hours and post back with results!

Yes, that's what I thought.

I'll try what you suggested above, as I never, ever close down Safari. I have a feeling this is time related. It seems that after a certain period of time of inactivity on the forum, that I have to login.

As I said above, I have to login many times per day.

Still, I'll report back after I've tried your suggestion. It'll be tomorrow as it's time for some sleep!

Kurt, it doesn't work. I did everything you suggested. Logged in to the forums, did a bit of (web!) surfing, left my Mac for a couple of hours, went to the forums, and hey presto! Yes, I had to login - again!

It seems to me that if I don't have any activity on the forums for around 30 minutes, then I have to re-login. I'm not the only one who is experiencing this.

It's a major pain. For example, if I reply to a forum notification email, I am taken to the thread, but I am not signed in. So, then I go to the login page, and my place on the relevant thread is lost as I am taken to the standard user-logged in page. I then have to go back to the email, and re-link from there.

If this is a rant, then I'm sorry, but, this whole thing puts me off using these forums, which is a shame as I have enjoyed being here for a number of years now.

I would really like to know who to contact regarding this issue.

Any ideas?

Don't know where I got the Kurt from 😊

Probably had me on the brain from a response just a bit ago in another thread. 🙂

But it has been really weird here for at least the last couple of weeks. I keep getting logged out for no reason I can figure out. And I don't mean after 30 minutes.

For example (and this has been happening a LOT), I can login, see that I'm logged in at the top, and go to any given forum. I spend all of 10 seconds there and click a link to move back to the top of forums, or another location. All the sudden, I'm logged out!

And it doesn't follow this particular pattern. It happens randomly. Sometimes I get logged out immediately after logging in. Just move to my first choice and I'm out. Other times I can be jumping around the forums for 5 minutes, and bang!, I'm logged out again. It isn't even always possible to log back in when that happens. I have to shut down Safari and start over.

I've tried clearing any cookie related to anything with Apple or Discussions in the name. No help. After saving a backup of the file which holds all of your cookies, I've even cleared all of the cookies, shut down Safari, started it again and logged into the forums. Still no change. I still get logged out at random intervals.

Why can I not be kept 'signed in'?
