Permissions won't stay repaired

Prior to upgrading to Snow Leopard, I ran Disk Utility and repaired permissions. I assumed the permissions actually got repaired, since Disk Utility said they did.

I installed Snow Leopard and ran Disk Utility again to repair permissions again, (I run Disk Utility before and after installing software updates), and found that it seemed like the same list of permissions that needed repair the first time needed it again.

I verified the disk and verification stopped and said I needed to repair the disk by starting from an install disc. I did that, but Disk Utility could find nothing to repair. I ran it again to be sure and the disk passed verification.

I restarted on my hard drive and ran Disk Utility to repair permissions again and once again, the same long list of faulty permissions were in need of repair and Disk Utility said it was repairing them.

At the end of the permissions repair log is this message:

"Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired."

Could this be the source of my problems? Can I delete this file? Do I need it? I don't use Apple Remote Desktop, and I assume it has something to do with Apple Remote Desktop.

I HAVE HAD THE VERY SAME PROBLEM, I EVEN TOOK MY COMPUTER TO THE APPLE STORE, AND EVEN THEY TOLD ME, DISK PERMISSIONS ARE NOT RELEVANT AND SHOULD BE IGNORED. BUT I TOTALLY DISAGREE WITH THAT. THIS ONE ACTION FIIXED MOST OF MY PERMISSIONS. The messages you get are not indicative of anything. You should ignore them. That's the way it works, according to Apple documentation already provided on this thread.

If you object, you are free to discuss it with Apple support. Everyone here is an Apple User like you, not an Apple employee.

I would also like to suggest to anyone still running 10.6.8, that Apple chose NOT to supply a 10.6.8 version of its latest Security Updates for Safari or anything else that may be vulnerable. You should strongly consider upgrading to a Mac OS X version that is still getting Security Updates, or disconnecting your computer from the Internet.

I'm totally puzzled by your reaction and your response.

For one, I've been here long enough (12 years) to know the exact nature of this user to user forum.

Secondly, I am not running Snow Leopard but Lion 10.7.5, though I do have a 10.6.8 boot partition on a 2nd internal HD for "just in case".

My comment that Disk Utility should NOT be reporting lines that Apple says we can ignore was only meant as reassurance to those being freaked out by the DU report. I know better than to presume an elephantine bureaucracy like Apple's or Adobe can be influenced by direct complaints or by forum messages. 😝

SOMETHING is wrong with the computer. It now takes around 5 minutes to access our company file server on the network. I click on the drive I want to access and the little wheel spins in the lower right corner of the window. This didn't happen before upgrading to Snow Leopard.

Me too: I can't even connect to the older mac, soon to be retired, on a home network, both directly connected to the same router.

Regarding the lack of security updates for Snow and now Lion:
Since the last post here, a shocking announcement of a mega-security hole in OS X, NOT APPLYING to Snow Leopard at all:

I am now having this problem and stumbled upon the thread. This is old as heck, but I wanted to also say that I agree with you and SimonJester. People like LincDavis are why techs get such a bad rap. A lack of social skills, certainly a need to feel superior and a general lack of politeness and thoughtfulness.

Why oh why, on so many boards is the deal where someone posts a thread and it doesn't appear to be 100% accurate for the forum, which is largely subjective anyway....and someone decides to get on and be snarky and point out it's on the wrong forum. If a moderator does it, that's there job....if you aren't a moderator, and you take it upon yourself....there's a good chance you're just a jerk. The world needs more understanding, kindness and people who want to be helpful to one another. Anything else, is a sign of a person with problems. I used to hate on them, today I choose to pray for them. If you have, enjoy or do reply like LincDavis's example, and as I've outlined....chances are you may be fairly miserable and have the need to bring others to your level of misery. A pity....on both sides.
