Thanks geoffwantirna - I just gave that a try - turned off/diconnected the wif fi from all linked devices and then repowered up the wifi router and then tried the iPhone again with fingers crossed.

Unfortunately no luck - I then tried the other iPhone 4s and it connected straight away - very frustrating!

The iPhone with the issue just had the spinning disk again.

Thanks for the idea though.

Might it be due to the wireless security mode and / or encryption technique?

I found that my iPhone WOULD NOT connect until I set the Encryption Technique to AES.

Once set to AES (it was formerly TKIP+AES) it connected perfectly.

A good test to see if it is a problem with the iPhone not recognising your wifi security settings, is to temporarily remove security from your router altogether.

If the iPhone connects with no security on your wireless router, then that's a good starting point.

My router is set to :

Security Mode: WPA-PSK(NO SERVER)

Authentication: WPA-PSK+WPA2-PSK

Encryption Technique: AES

There seem to be a number of issues affecting various people. Naturally, start with the simple solutions such as turning off your iPhone's wifi, forgetting the network, reconnecting etc.

Only alter your router's setting if you are comfortable doing so!

Thanks for the message InterceptorIII.

I tried the removal of the all security last night and that still had the same effect - all ok on our original iPhone 4s, iPad, 3 other mobile phones, xbox and a laptop.

But our new iPhone 4s? - no the little rascal still does not connect.

The thing is this new iPhone was delievered last thursday and after Apple kindly replaced the phone with another at the Apple Store in Brent Cross on Sunday I am having the same issue with the replaced phone.

As I ponder the situation it seems to me:

1. Is it a BT Infinity Home Hub problem? One iPhone 4s connects no problem, 2 iPhones (a new and replaced one) will not connect, other devices connect without problem including an iPad. I have tried connecting to the BTFon and BTOpenZone as well and the same problem comes up - continual spinning disk rather than connecting.

2. Is it an iPhone 4s problem? lots of people obvioulsy have similar issues on home routers based on this forum issue but two new iPhones having the same problem is surely unlikely.

Actions taken now: replaced phone, reset of the phone - network and everything, modem and router restarted, pairing mode used, security removed entirely, wep tried instead of standard wpa/wpa(2), removing all other wifi devices, tried each channel twice rather than automatic, examined every hub option to see if there any maximums or over-ride etc facilities. I wanted to be able to hard-wire the MAC Address but nothing is available on the BT Hub.

My Homeplug supplier has suggested I need a I could use an Access Point (£40) in my Homeplug LAN and then connect to that device.

Any thoughts?

Thanks for reading and I continue to be open to any pointers as there must be a solution!

I tried all the router wifi channel changes even changed setting mode to 802.11n only - still iphone was dropping out like a dead donkey or just not connecting - then I read that gregt (of hereabouts notoriety) wrote switch to airplane mode, see what happens - how bad was that - anyway, switched phone to airplane mode - bloody h e l l it worked and, when airplane mode was switched off phone didn't drop network ... set wifi network as 802.11n channel 10 mixed Mhz.

will continue to monitor, also android device (sgsii) which didn't have any channel selection problems until trying to fix iphone, but has relaxed now above settings in place.

it is almost 100% the o/s but really as long as network connection works who cares, i4get!

thanks forum

OMG! I can not believe I got my iphone wireless to work and simple it was. After reading through all these tips of which I tried and none worked I came across one that said they used the security key so I tried it and IT WORKED!

I went to settings>wi fi>(the name of my home LAN)>and entered my routers security key and NOT THE router password and Wah Lah!

Holy Cow Batman! how simple was that!

Still struggling - I have tried the Airplane Mode one and tried the Bt Hub passowrd and the security key and still no joy.

I have been able to join a WiFi at a friends house where they have an Orange Live Box.

So, still in the situation on my Bt Infinity where I have one iPhone 4s which connects with no problem and one that does not. Infuriating!

Still open to any pointers - thanks.

Bailly's post on Feb 12, 2012 8:58 PM resolved my problem!

Problem:

Unable to connect to home Wi-Fi network after a iphone4 reset/recovery (following an update freeze).

Fix:

Go to your Settings --->General--->Reset--->and choose, Reset Network Settings. This will clear all of the past tries to connect to Wifi. Once you reset, go back into your Wifi options and will be able to see your router. Once you choose it, it will ask for your security code and everything should connect fine.

Thanks Bailly!

OK- I've had the same problem today: Home Wifi working- go to Starbucks- connect to the network there no issues- come home- iphone 4s will not connect to home wifi network-bank head against wall for an hour- call Apple support- doesn't work-Apple guy says try resetting network settings- does not work- apple guy calls back- this time it is a different guy-he suggests turning off the home router and then back on- I resist and tell him out mac, ipad and itouches all work and are happily connected- apple guy says try it anyway- I sigh- I shrug- I go and turn the home router off and then after a minute I turn it back on- I grab the iPhone 4s and try to reconnect to home network...

IT WORKED!

Solved my problem with being unable to connect to my home wifi with iphone4s.

It had been working fine until this morning, when it just said unable to connect to network and the only option available was 'dismiss'. Frustrating to say the least!

Tried reset in network settings, tried airplane mode, tried switching router on/off, tried switching phone on/off..

Then I remembered that yesterday I has set up a wireless camera in a bird box in the garden. Switched that off and bingo! Phone dropped straight back into home wifi.

There are options to chnage the frequency used by the wireless cam, so I'll give them a go.

Cheers

Somehow I got my iphone 4S to work again. It had been working well until today. I could see it try to connect to my network, but the little asterisk would keep spinning and just stop, leaving me with only 3G. Here are the steps I took: First, I checked the settings on my router (2wire 2701hg-b, IP address: 192.168.1.254), and under Home network > advanced settings > Address Allocation Settings, I noticed my iPhone did not have the same settings as my mac and other computers. So, I gave it a fixed address, then told my iphone to "forget this network", rejoined the network, and used the static IP address, while also filling in the other information (subnet mask, router, DNS, search domains) that were listed by my router. Lo and behold, it's working quite well.

Kim9674, I too have this issue. Our family has 2 ipads, 4 itouches and 6 iphones and all work except one. That phone does connect to every other network I have ever tried and also connected to the home network until about 1 month ago. Now I have tried EVERYTHING and it just won't connect. I have:

1. reset the phone

2. forgot the network

3. tried with no security

4. restarted the router

5. reset the router

Given that 11 apple products work fine but one doesn't I have trouble thinking it is anything but the phone. Of course, the Apple Genius is convinced otherwise since, surprise surprise, the iphone connects to the Apple Store network (like every other network I have tried.)

This is extremely frustrating. I am sure that the phone has stored some router information (even through the reset) and that file is corrupted somehow. It is enough to give Android a try...

Have you tried with every other wi-fi device switched off? I found my problems were down to a conflict with another wi-fi device. It is perfect all day and then it drops every evening and some weekends. After tearing my hair out for weeks, I discovered that it is because of a conflict with another device. Unfortunately, it's something in the house of my adjoining neighbour that causes the trouble - the connection only drops when he's at home! I first realised it when he was away for a couple of weeks and had perfect uninterupted connectivity. We've talked about it, but can't identify the offensive device, except to think it might be his work laptop which is heavily security screened because of his job.

With anyone else, though, to see if the problem is another of their own devices, I'd suggest turning everything else off, and then try to make the connection with the iPhone. If that works, turn the other devices on one by one until you find the conflict - then reset the offending one.

Just to back up what JMOR66 said, this was driving me mad, I tried forgetting my home network, tried a hard reset, reset the network connections, all with no joy. All other devices in the house were connected fine, and my 4S was connected to another connection 5 minutes earlier with no problems. A hard reset of my BT homehub solved the problem, a soft reset was no good.

There seem to be two groups of problems here.

Group A has an issue that can be solved simply and easily by doing the obvious things like re-sets, re-boot routers, forget networks etc. Group B (my group) has tried everything suggested here six times and had ZERO results.

But, today looks like it was my (and I hope the rest of you too) lucky day: Apple released iOS 5.1.

I hope that I'm not being premature in declaring the problem solved, but for the last hour—the first time in 6+ weeks, my iPhone 4S is connecting (and more importantly, STAYING connected) to my home WiFi.

I'll be back if the issue reappears, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this thread dies a quick death.
