Do I need a screen protector really?

I've read through discussions and looked a various products online. Now I'd like to ask experienced iPad users their opinions. Should I buy one? (I sent back my Smart Cover and bought a Marware cover. I like it much better.)

I have always bought screen protectors for iPod Touches and before that, the Palm devices. However, with the iPad, I didn't want to have to fight a larger sized cover, getting air bubbles out, aligning it correctly, etc. So I decided to go with no protector and bought a number of 3M microfiber cloths, as some have suggested. With a protector, I've read that some decrease the screens sharpness/brightness, others make the surface less sensitive to pressure, etc.

Going without a protector has worked out very well. Unlike a Palm with its non-hard, and somewhat delicate surface, the IPad has a glass surface, so I don't believe the odds of scratching it are as likely. What sold me on this was the fact that several reports indicated that Apple removed all iPad protectors from their stores, saying they weren't needed. I suspect there was another reason for this, but that was the deciding factor for me.

I bought the SGP screen protector for the front of my iPad. It looks beautiful! No bubbles at all. I wouldnt know the iPad had a screen protector on if I hadn't put it on myself. The screen protector also came with a skin for the back of the iPad. It was so easy to put on and added just a bit of a grippy feel which is great because I found the iPad a bit slick.

Depends on if you're a gambler or not.

The iPad will work just fine without a screen protector, BUT, if your screen ever becomes damaged because you didn't install a screen protector, then basically you'll need to buy a whole new iPad, because the cost involved in replacing the screen is almost the same cost as a refurbished iPad. The parts alone will cost you around $200.00. Unplanned accidents happen. So a 20.00 screen protector is good insurance to have. The saying "Penny wise, and pound foolish" comes to mind 🙂

As a side note I also feel that it also adds resale value to the iPad. An item like the iPad is updated fairly frequently, and I almost always update to the newest model. Having a screen protector makes it easier to sell the old version, because the new buyer will know that the unit is in like new condition. BTW there are good and bad screen protectors and you shouldn't just assume that they are all alike. I personally use only the ZAGG protector. It uses nano-memory technology and is literally military grade. If it's good enough for the Air Force to use on their helicopter blades, then my little iPad will be safely protected with it also 😉

Well first no one is going to "wrap a helicopter in several layers of screen protectors" so that’s a moot point. As far as the glass goes, safety glass is made precisely by mixing special plastic with layers of glass. Does that make the glass “unbreakable? Of course not, BUT IT DOES make the glass MUCH MORE RESISTANT to finding a breaking point! The majority of people don't whack their fine electronics with hammers everyday, so extreme abuse isn't what we're talking about here. Most people like myself are more concerned with not getting scratches than impact damage, because the likelihood of getting scratches is much more likely. As a tech I have seen many laptops and other electronics, that ended up in the trash simply from wear and tear. Wear and tear that would have been prevented if they had a quality screen/body protector installed. I have yet to see any device that used protection to not look new, even years afterward. I have however seen UNprotected devices that looked like they went through a war, even though they were only a few years old. I like my stuff to look new. I baby all my stuff, but accidents happen, and it’s a small price to pay for all the added protection that a good protector offers. I also like the fact that most good (full body) protectors also add extra grip to the device for easier handling. Those worried about things like impacts should consider something like the ZAGGmate, which carries with it a 1-year warranty against breakage.
