Keyboard Language Indicator Popup

When switching keyboard input source the onscreen display showing input source no longer pops up on screen. Is there a way of getting this back?

Mac OS X (10.6.6)

I have downloaded and installed onyx and run the clear cache scripts and automation and the problem is still there after a reboot unfortunately. Any other pointers?

With El Capitan in 2015 Apple changed the default shortcut for changing languages to Control plus Space, so the old potential conflict with Spotlight is gone.
