ipad app update asks for wrong apple ID

When I check settings, my correct apple ID shows. But when I do an "update apps", the wrong apple ID shows up, with only the password box available for input. What to do?

I mean that the poster's issue was undoubtedly worked out a long time ago. I don't think they are waiting for answer.

And it is not a "problem". It is a policy - Apps are forever tied to the Apple Account they were purchased under. So, if you want to change your Apple ID, rather than setting up a totally different one, it is always advisable to go to Manage your Apple ID and EDIT the Apple ID to the new ID. That way the new ID is still under the same Apple Account....just the "key" to access it has changed. So, all the purchases are still tied to that account.

And not understanding why you would be unable to update them. If they were downloaded using your ID, you just put in your password, when the box asking for the password comes up. I have a very old Apple ID that I purchased a few apps with long ago. When it comes up, I put in the password for that ID....

Thanks for the definitive answer GB. It needed to be said. We have the intrinsic problem that accounts can't be merged. My original iTunes account was set up in 1999 on a Windows machine. 5 years later I set up my mac.com account, and most (all?) of the apps are associated with the old account. The iPad seems to know, and will not let me log in with the new iTunes account, regardless of the account settings for iTunes or iCloud on the iPad. Something we have to live with.

Hi dcnicholls,

One way to make it as painless as possible is to go to Manage your Apple ID for the old Apple ID and change the password on it to match the password on your @mac.com Apple ID. Then you won't care which Apple ID is asking for a passcode because it is the same for both. That's what I have done for years, and I really can't tell you even how many apps I still have under the old ID....

Manage your Apple ID: Apple - My Apple ID

This solves the issue of having an outdated user name which is no longer linked to an email you have access to.

I had forgotten my password as well as not having the correct date of birth, because when I joined i sort of put in whatever came to mind so I could not get to the security questions to answer.

This took of the issue, including allowing me to update apps I had under the old log in name.(all free apps)

I have never purchased an app
