ipad app update asks for wrong apple ID

When I check settings, my correct apple ID shows. But when I do an "update apps", the wrong apple ID shows up, with only the password box available for input. What to do?

Why it should do that when I'm clearly signed in with my own account

The account that you are logged in with is irrelevant. Everything is tied to the account that downloaded it, if your ex-wife's account downloaded the app you will obviously be asked for that account's password to download updates to it - to get the app linked to your account delete the app and buy and download it on your account

Well, I must be reading the wrong posts because they have all said it is impossible. You can only "hide" them. I have yet to see anywhere that I can actually "delete" them.

And by delete, I don't mean "remove". I am quite capable of removing one from my phone. I want to actual DELETE it from my iCloud account so that it shows "Get" instead of "Download" in the App Store.

If the account I am logged in with is irrelevant, why does it ask for my ex-wife's log in. There is obviously some relationship still in place either between my account and hers, or my phone and her account, Either way I need some way to break that relationship so that I can download it now onto my recently restored phone without having to use her account.

You are reading the wrong posts, hiding an app from the Purchased section does only that i.e. it hides it, it has nothing to do with what you need to do.

I am quite capable of removing one from my phone.

That is what you need to do, you cannot 'DELETE it' from an account (and even if you could delete it you would not be deleting it from your iCloud account, it's the account that you are using for the store that's relevant).

If you've already deleted the app from your phone (if you haven't then do so), download it from your account so that the installed version is linked to your account (you may need to log out of your account, close the App Store app via the phone's taskbar, and then re-open and log back in and download it on your account).

Don't know why you seem to think that it's not irrelevant. Obviously the app was downloaded by your wife's account, that is why you are being asked to enter her account's password.

There is obviously some relationship still in place either between my account and hers, or my phone and her account

The relationship is that you are using her app on your phone.

As you are posting on a thread about downloading app updates I assumed that you were asking about downloading an app update, not a completely different problem. In what order have you done things e.g. are you logging out of your store account (not iCloud), closing the App Store app via the phone's taskbar, doing a soft-reset/reboot, and then re-opening the App Store app and logging in ?

Oct 30, 2017 9:18 AM in response to King_Penguin

I only discovered about 1/2 an hour ago that you can actually log out of the Store separately from logging out of iCloud. It's not like it's obvious at all - like many of Apple's wonderful "hidden" features, that you only learn about by reading tech review posts.

And as I was (according to the store), logged in with my own account, I failed to see how that was a problem.

But, I shall now do it all again in the order you specified.

I wont be holding my breath.

Oct 30, 2017 9:49 AM in response to King_Penguin

Well, that was fun. Logged out of my store account (not iCloud), closed the App Store app via the phone's taskbar, did a soft-reset/reboot, (Shut Down), and then restarted the phone, re-opened the App Store app and logged in.

Same result, it is still asking for my ex's log in.

I'm guessing that maybe you have a reading problem. I just clicked the button above which noted that over 3300 people had said they had the same problem.

I have done all the signing in/signing out, closing all apps, restarting phone etc. etc. etc. and nothing works, the app store insists on asking for my ex-wife's account password (which I obviously must have somehow used to do the original download). Why it should do that when I'm clearly signed in with my own account is one of those wonderful Apple Mysteries, of the same nature as the MS mysteries that I used to rib my Window user friends about.

Is there a particular reason why you feel the need to insult someone? Had you read my response in context, you would have realized that I was responding to someone who had a totally different set of issues, so the number of people saying "me too" on this thread has nothing to do with my response.

So, you have signed in and out of the iTunes & App Store and iCloud, then signed back in. At what point is it asking you for your ex-wife's ID? What, exactly are you trying to do and when, during that process, does it ask you for her ID?

To answer belatedly some of your questions, I have had the grimstad@mac.com account since Apple first introduced this. It was Apple that announced later it was going to get rid of mac.com (never did) and replace it with me.com. Then it happened again with iCloud.com. I protected myself from this madness by getting a gmail account, still using my Apple account for those who knew it. Somehow, around 2002, Apple's database got two account names into its database in a way that "should have been impossible," and it could only be corrected by a DBA at Apple last year. This may or may not be related, but I believe it is not.

For some reason, on some devices, my iTunes store login is simply "grimstad," which the store, quite correctly, says does not exist. How this can be changed on those devices I simply do not know, but I do know that even the correct name is not accessible from devices that work properly. All this was made more confusing because the passwords for iTunes and iCloud and others are actually the same, they are called by different names by those different logins. This I charge is sloppy.

I really need a life that does not include hours of computer debugging, but that is a dream of another time.

OK, I think you are a bit confused about the iCloud.com piece. iCloud.com did not replace the @me and @mac.com email addresses, it was added to the Apple account for them.

So, you have an Apple account that has your Apple ID as johnnyappleseed@me.com or johnnyappleseed@mac.com. When iCloud was introduced, that same Apple account got an iCloud.com email address added to it. If you have an @me or @mac.com, its corresponding iCloud account can be used interchangeably with the @me or @mac.com sign in. So, one Apple account - two email addresses associated with it.

And again, I have no idea how you would have an Apple ID that isn't an email address, but why are you not able to sign out of the iTunes & App Store on those devices? A password is not required to sign out of the iTunes & App Store.

My apologies, I had been fighting with that, and other wonderful new iPhone features, all day, and was getting really frustrated, particularly with the non-helpful answers everywhere (not to mention the 6 hour battery life).

You can hardly blame me for thinking your answer was for that question though. The illogical way this forum is laid out, made it look like a direct response. And the poor layout is testified to by the fact that you have to ask those questions, instead of being able to see the answers in my previous comments.

I was trying to load Kindle back onto my phone after doing a restore from my iTunes, and the iCloud download icon was showing every time I tried to access Kindle in the App Store. Whenever I pressed the download icon it would ask for her ID login. But it is OK now. After (I lost count of) numerous logouts, shutdowns, logins etc it has finally decided to work.

Nov 1, 2017 7:38 PM in response to AppleDrivesMeInsane

Actually, each post has an "In response to" line and the date and time at the top of the text in the post.

And again, I am not responsible for how this forum is laid out, I am a user just like you. So, frustrated or not, there is no reason to take it out on people who are trying to help others.

And, the thread is laid out in the order in which responses are given - very linear. The key is reading the posts in order, and looking at the "In response to" info.
