G4 and endless spinning beach ball

Everytime I try to start a program (Adobe CS2 InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.), my G4 launches the spinning beach ball. I have had to force it to quit, as I can't access the force quit command from the Apple menu. I am able to boot into safe mode, and use my programs, but my fonts are not available in safe mode.

I have corrected file permissions after every reboot, and ran the Apple Hardware Test, which returned the logic board error codes SCC_/3/7 and SCC-/1/5. However, I replaced the original processer with a Newer Technology MaxPower G4 processer about two years ago, so I'm not sure if the Hardware Test is still accurate since it's not the original.

Any help in determining what the problem is would be greatly appreciated!

Were I to guess, I would suspect that your launch services cache is corrupted. THis can be easily tested.

Take a look in /Library/Caches for files that look like this:

com.apple.LaunchServices-014501.csstore

There may be several of these. the significance of the numbers after 014 are the user numbers, 0 for root, 501,501 and increasing, "real" user accounts.

Drag those files to the desktop and reboot. That should cause the cache to be restored.

You may get a "first time launch" dialog box asking if you really want to launch the application for some non-Apple applications. Just click Yes or OK in the dialog.

For a more thorough cache cleanup, you might get AppleJack and install it and run it in automatic mode. That will clean up a bunch of junk that has accumulated.

I tried everyone's suggestions this morning, and it worked well for a while -- was able to get a few jobs done. However, I had to leave for a couple of hours for a meeting, and when I returned, it was behaving just like yesterday.

Any ideas?

First, thank you for your help, I really appreciate it! I did as you suggested, but the first time I rebooted, there was no change. However, I shut down, booted into safe mode, repaired permissions, and restarted normally. My computer behaved very well for awhile, and I was to get a few jobs completed. However, after leaving it idle for a couple of hours, the problem is occurring again.

I am going to download Applejack at home tonight (I am blocked from downloading at work), load that and give it a try in the morning.

Hi there,

Yep, I did make sure that I was looking at All Processes, so we're good there. In the meantime, I installed Applejack this morning and ran it -- it didn't find any problems. I also unplugged all peripherals, leaving just the mouse, keyboard and monitor attached to no avail. Disconnected the ethernet just to make sure that our network wasn't mucking things up. Also created a new user account and logged in that way, all to no avail.

I am stumped and hoping that someone will be able to head me in a direction that might lead to a solution. I'd really like to be able to pinpoint the problem before I start buying new parts. I'm kind of leaning toward the motherboard since the Apple Hardware Test indicated there was a problem, but I'm not sure that it was accurate since the processor is an upgraded Newer Tech and not the original Apple...
