Why so many people do not take iPad seriously?

When I was about to buy my first iPad, a great number of my friends said, "don't waste your money" or "iPad is just a bigger iPod...it's a waste". Even though the iPad 2 came out, most of them still think the same way. When i was "researching" the idea of buying an ipad many people on the web seemed to be sceptic about it as well. Personally I enjoy the iPad and I love it's productivity. I do my school work on it, watch movies, show presentations, email, use social media etc. In my opinion, some of you may disagree, even flash doesn't play such a big role in ipad's performance anymore. So why people do not take iPad seriously? In my opinion it's the interface. By interface I mean the home screen, the lock screen etc. When people see the same interface for the iPad as for the iPod, they immediately associate it with a toy and not the tool of productivity. No matter what the marketing guys will say about the iPad people still will think it's an expensive toy until they actually try it. So, what do you think?

I reject your premise. Anyone with an IQ over 80 takes the iPad seriously.

I know people with seven-figure incomes who use the iPad as a business productivity tool.

I think you need to start asking people that have made it past junior high school. Seriously, the opinions you describe are hyper unusual. The iPad is a powerful computer, you can use it to unlock the secrets of the universe, or play video games with it. The choice is yours.

Simple ignorance of a new technology. Tablets are a recent development, so many people simply have no clue about what they really are, what software is available for them, what they can do. Also what they cannot do - as seen by the many posts here of people apparently expecting the iPad to be basically a fully featured touch screen laptop, which it is not.

Back in the late 1980's and early 1990's, when the first real laptop computers were coming out, people said the same thing about them - "don't buy one of those, they are not real computers and you can't actually do anything meaningful on them". But some of us somehow managed to analyze data and write entire dissertations on those early machines (I sometimes miss my old powerbook 140 and Twinhead slimnote).

I think that people do take it seriously as an entertainment device, but if many people do not take it seriously as an all round tool that can be used for everything, it's because the iPad, or Apple, haven't taken it seriously as that sort of tool yet.

When they do decide to make it a serious all round laptop replacement, with the same power and connectivity, as the macbook etc, then they will also have to bring an end to the macbook and maybe even all of the laptops, there really wont be any point in them when the ipad is more advanced. It reduces laptops to just a lovely looking screen, with the option of docking it with a physical keyboards etc, for those that want that.

This really is the beginning of the end for laptops, except that with humans still being pretty stupid and allowing business and money to get in the way of the advancement of our planet as a whole, then progress will of course be dripped tediously to us as slowely as we will tolerate it.

So unfortunately I think it will be another five or six versions of iPad before they are ready to blow their own laptop products off the shelf and into history, and everyone else's laptops too.

I like your thinking :)

I think ultimately laptops will take over pcs and tablets will replace laptops.

Personally I hate this huge box that makes all these sounds when booting and plus it takes up too much space. So I think pcs and their boxes are the next in line to instinct. For the most part I agree with you =)

in a few upgrades the iPad probably will be a sufficient fully performing laptop.

That doesn't matter much if the system remains closed so that the user cannot install his own fonts, keyboards, or apps obtained from somewhere other than the iTunes app store. That will always make iOS a lot less usable for some kinds of serious work than a machine with the full OS X.

Pure and simple they are ignorant. I used to be ignorant about the iPad too. I thought I'd have no use for the iPad and my iPod could do everything the iPad does. Then I bought a iPad for my business because of some recent apps. One thing lead to another... and that's when I graduated iPad U. Now I use my iPad for more things than I do my main Mac. So many great apps and today doctors, lawyers, architects, engineers, pilots, etc all use the iPad. In-fact I think the only people who don't use the iPad, are those people who are ignorant about it 😁

Yeah, i agree, it would be hard to fit a great deal of memory inside a good looking tablet.

But, storage space is becoming less important, and that's a situation being pushed quite hard by Apple itself, it seems like everything will be downloadable, and as with Gmail etc, all music and games and photos can be stored online and just be accessible when we want it. Owning physical stuff is a burden, access to your stuff when you want it is the way things will go.

I personally would buy far more software, music and games, if i could store it all the same way as gmail, i've never had a problem accessing my mail when i wanted it, and never had to back up or think about access to it at all, it's just there.

We wouldn't have to update stuff or worry about it at all, just get online and use your stuff. I'm looking forward to that, i'd probably keep photos private and offline for now, but as for the games and other software, that can be kept and maintained by the makers, and sellers of the products.

I think we may always need a little bit of local memory on our devices, but mostly we don't and the future popularity will be based upon not only the quality of music, movies, games, and software, but also who gives the smoothest and most uninterrupted access to our stuff.

I absolutely love touchscreen and I can't wait until it all gets far more advanced.

(I appear to have posted this twice, if anyone can remove the extra post, or tell me how to, i'd appreciate it, i don't like mess.)
