Restoring iPhone from previous Backup: do another backup first???

I was told by a MobileMe rep that I should restore my iPhone from a Backup. When I connect the iPhone to iTunes (not set to automatically back up when connected!) and press Restore, I get the following message:

"Do you want to back up the settings for the iPhone “iPhone4 VB” before restoring the software? [2 options]: BackUP Don't Backup"

No matter which of the two I click on, I get to the next message:

"Are you sure you want to restore the iPhone “iPhone4 VB” to its factory settings? All of your media and other data will be erased, and the newest version of the iPhone software will be installed."

Actually I do NOT want to restore to factory settings, but to yesterday's backup. Where and how to I get to this option?

P.S. I once did a restore to factory settings and it was quite a lot of work to get my iphone back to the way it used to be (among others, a need to rearrange all apps into pages and folders, etc.)

Any advice would be appreciated.

Cheers,

Veit

So, for my friend, you can restore iPhone using the older backup copy to recover the files. It's very straightforward for the restoration. Simply follow these procedures:

1. Simply right-click on the device in iTunes and select "Restore from backup…".

2. You can then select the backup copy you want to restore. Once you select the correct backup copy, hit the "Restore" button and iTunes will restore your iPhone.

That's it.

Once the iPhone is plugged in and recognized by iTunes, you will want to back up the iPhone. To do this, click the iPhone icon in the left menu. This will bring up a summary of the iPhone as well as options. Click “Restore.” Click "Yes" when asked if you want to back up your data on the iPhone and then you can restore iPhone from older backup.

First, backup your iPhone (right click on your iPhone under devices and click Back Up). To restore from a backup, right click on your iPhone under Devices in iTunes and click Restore from Backup. You can then choose which iPhone backup you want to restore from. Hope this helps.

If you use iTunes backups, there is only one backup (the latest) maintained per device at any point in time. So in this case the new backup overwrote the older backup, and it would be possible to recover only if a copy of ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/ was made before the clean install (through Time Machine or any other solution), restoring that folder on the system and doing a restore from iTunes.

You can see the device backups (with the timestamps) available in iTunes by going to iTunes → Preferences and then navigating to the Devices tab.

Some recommendations and points to note to avoid such a situation and have something to fall back to:

You can have multiple backups in iCloud for a device and choose which backup to restore from (assuming there are no device/iOS compatibility issues).

Use both iCloud and iTunes backups together (once iCloud backup is turned on, automatic backups in iTunes would be turned off; so a manual backup would have to be triggered in iTunes).

When using iTunes backup, trigger a manual backup in iTunes followed by a manual backup in Time Machine before major changes to a device, like re-installing iOS or jailbreaking or restoring iPhone from previous backup.

I had to get a new 5s after 2 weeks for a hardware issue... i made a back up before i got the new phone... however when i sync'd with itunes i made the mistake of selecting new phone instead of restore from a previous back up. as soon as i hit the tab i realized it but it was to late and in the process of accepting the new phone it backed the new phone up and that was the only back up showing to restore from... however i went to preferences and then devices and deleted the back up that happened when i selected "new phone" and then went back to restore and it said this phone has never been backed up... and when i selected restore it reverted back to the back up that i did before i swapped the phone out... phew..... what a refief...... so you can restore from an older back up if you delete the one that you dont want.....

iTunes has a nasty habit of deleting the previous backup every time it does a backup. If you really have an old backup intact, there is a way to restore iPhone from backup. It's a good idea to manually go into your backup directory and manually copy it over to a new name once in a while. That way iTunes won't touch it, and you can use it in an emergency such as yours.

Assuming you have older backups:

* Mac OS: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup

* Windows XP: %AppData%\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup

* Windows Vista: %AppData%\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup

* Windows 7: %AppData%\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup

Go onto iTunes, right click on your device on the left-hand side bar, and their should be an option 'Restore From Backup', or something similar, click that and it'll help you to restore iPhone from previous Backup.

Helpful. Thanks for your help, mortonlevi.

In order to recover iPhone from old bacukp, run through the following 4 easy steps:

STEP 1:Make sure iTunes doesn’t automatically sync with iPhone when connected.

STEP 2:Connect your iPhone to iTunes and Back up by selecting Preferences > Backup from iTunes, or right-click on your iPhone and choose back up.

STEP 3:Restore your iPhone by selecting Restore under Preferences.

Note that restoring the iPhone will restore the previous iPhone firmware. Your iPhone will be completely erased after the new firmware is installed. So make sure your back up is good, you can have a try on iPhone Data Recovery!

Seems useful~~Thanks for the detailed steps.

If the backup is where it belongs (in the MobileSync folder) there should be a button "Restore from Backup" on the Summary page when you click on the iPhone's name in iTunes. You need the latest version of iTunes (11.x) installed.

If iOS needs to be restored also restore it with the Restore iPhone button; when the restore is done it will restore any valid backups that are in the MobileSync folder.

You are right. If you have back up your iPhone data, you can restore iPhone from backup.

To restore information from a backup, use one of the following methods after connecting your iOS device to the computer with which you normally sync:

Right-click (or Control-click) the device and choose Restore from Backup If you have a new phone, you can connect to iTunes and it will prompt to restore from your backup Solution from Apple.com.

You can see the details on support.apple.com

Here are steps about how to extract iPhone backup from iTunes. And you don't need to do another backup.

Connect your device to the computer that you stored your backup on.

Open iTunes. If iTunes tells you there's an iOS update, get the latest version.

Go to File > Devices > Restore from Backup. If you're using Windows and don’t see a File menu, press the Alt key.

Look at the date and size of each backup and pick the most relevant.

Click “Restore” and wait for the process to finish. Your device will restart and then sync with your computer. Stay connected until the sync finishes.
