"There is a problem with your device"

I just plugged my iPad (1) into iTunes to sync and it said there was a new software update available and did I want to install it. I said yes and the update started. After a while, it said there was an error and I needed to restore which I attempted only to have an "There is a problem with your device" message come up. I unplugged it and plugged it in again and the same error message happens every time. I contacted Apple support and they said the "hardware" still has 60 days of warranty left but they want $29 per incident or $79 for ongoing support and an Apple Store is 100 miles away. I would appreciate any help I could get. Thanks.

Works fine in Holland,

Took me several hours yesterday, we did try a lot different things to get the iPad working but nothing worked out. We did talk a lot about because we also thought it was a problem with this specific iPad. Till we mentioned there were more people with the same problem.
