So I'm new to the whole Mac Universe and bad habbits die hard, so here we go. I just had this Mackeeper pop up and so forth and I down loaded it. After doing so I scaned my mac it said I had all these threats and I thought it was fishy so I googled it and found these post. Thought all was well being that I've been told it's hard to get a virus on these macs but still I down loaded it anyways. I just draged them to the trash to uninstall them being that it was what I was suposed to do, but what now? how much truble am I in? I'm really freaked out cause I got this computer to start my dream of opening a clothing line and hate to see I just flushed all my money down the tube!

Please HELP!

You didn't flush all your money — only what you threw away on MacKeeper. Use the instructions I've linked below to delete it completely from your computer. Note that if you've already deleted a few of the pieces, you won't find them in the course of following these instructions, but proceed through all the steps anyway:

Pop-ups can happen on the internet all the time. It's just that Mac users don't have to believe them when they say you have a virus because you don't.

I just laugh at those goofy pop-ups and close them (and feel a little pity for Windows folks who have to worry about them).

Don't download stuff unless you're very sure you need and/or want it. There are no viruses that affect the modern versions of Mac OS X, but it's possible to get malware (such as trojans) by downloading stuff from suspicious or unknown sources.

When in doubt, come here and ask.

I've always found the people on the Apple forum to be extreamly helpful and knowledgable. I would listen to the advise given.

To add my pennies worth..

I have to say that in the past I have downloaded these so called cleanup SW programs, some expensive and claiming the world., Springclean, Onyx, Diskwarrior etc etc..

Sooner or later I've ended up with a catastrophic problem with my OS which caused me to re-install. These issues happened immeadiatly after using the utility so I can confidently blame them. Now I stay away.

I'm not an expert but I suspect that each time OSX has an update that these utitlities are not keeping in step quick enough, and they end up writing to locations that have changed etc. (Just guessing here)

The old saying "if it's working don't break it" is very true!!

Sorry to say Allan but Disk Warrior totally hosed my OSx. This happened after using Disk Warrior with no trouble at all for quite a while and then one day.. Bam!.. I was getting kernal panics etc.

Re-installed OSX and everything was fine. This was on Tiger and i had a G5 Power Mac. So it was a while ago. But never had the nerve to try it again!

I agree, it was highly recommended to me, and worked well until it killed my G5. I'd be interested to hear the current feedback. Maybe I'll get an update if they have improved things!

I started downloading 'MacKeeper' a moment ago (Before I came acress this forum of course). During the download process, the percentge of download was very suspicious, going from 0% to 300% all the way to over 1000% in a few seconds. I magaged to force quit using the keyboard shortcut, as the usual quit wouldn't work.

This has never happened to me and I will never consider anything from ZeoBit.

Anyone else experience this before, please let me know.

Cheers,

Mike

Thomas is more or less correct, though whether MacKeeper falls into the technical definition of 'malware' or not is rather irrelevant to the end-user experience, but at the very least you should clean out your browser caches, where MK will more than likely have stuck some little suprises that could cause repeated pop-ups.

In Safari menubar, choose ‘Safari > Reset Safari’. Make sure all the options are checked.

This will not only clear out your caches, but everything else stored by the browser. Don’t worry, it won’t affect your bookmarks, but it will reset your ‘top sites’ and history.

If you use Firefox, go to the menubar, choose ‘Tools > Clear Recent History…’ and choose ‘Everything’. Again, it’ll clear everything out but won’t delete your bookmarks.

Obviously, if you use any other browsers like Opera or something you’ll have to find the same options for those too.

I purchased a 17 macbook pro and i love it .. The only thing is though i saw some ads for mackeeper and i was like ok .. let me get it might be program that will have more security. We'll i downloaded it and come to say it messed everything up for me . Everytime i would try to write something or view something on youtube i would get pauses and breaks and i didn't know what i was doing wrong. Here I was thinking it might be my memory but still even at that i still have alot. So today I was curious to find this whole section open about mackeeper the dissatisfaction of the product so i immediately deleted it restarted my mac and it is golden now. thanks guys for your help .

Wow! So glad I looked up this discussion before following the impulse to download Mackeeper. From past experience, I'm always a bit suspicious of software that interacts with or alters system-level components, but I almost fell for Mackeeper's claim of being the No.1 system utility for the Mac. Thank you all for bringing me back to my senses. No thanks Mackeeper, I'll leave my OS in Apple's excpert hands.
