MacKeeper is horrible malware that causes a "virus warning" to pop up in your browser that freezes the functionality of your computer until you force quit the browser several times. I'm STILL trying to get rid of it! You are misrepresenting your product and I can't imagine what you are gaining from hijacking peoples computers like this other than an evil twisted chuckle. Why don't you show some good will towards the "legitimacy" of your product and tell us how to stop this annoying malicious virus addware that all of sudden started popping up AFTER we did the free (except for the major headache of this software) download? I have deleted it from my system (which was a headache as well) and now I'm getting this popup which I NEVER got before this bogus mackeeper program.

You didn't flush all your money — only what you threw away on MacKeeper. Use the instructions I've linked below to delete it completely from your computer. Note that if you've already deleted a few of the pieces, you won't find them in the course of following these instructions, but proceed through all the steps anyway:

Pop-ups can happen on the internet all the time. It's just that Mac users don't have to believe them when they say you have a virus because you don't.

I just laugh at those goofy pop-ups and close them (and feel a little pity for Windows folks who have to worry about them).

Don't download stuff unless you're very sure you need and/or want it. There are no viruses that affect the modern versions of Mac OS X, but it's possible to get malware (such as trojans) by downloading stuff from suspicious or unknown sources.

When in doubt, come here and ask.

I've always found the people on the Apple forum to be extreamly helpful and knowledgable. I would listen to the advise given.

To add my pennies worth..

I have to say that in the past I have downloaded these so called cleanup SW programs, some expensive and claiming the world., Springclean, Onyx, Diskwarrior etc etc..

Sooner or later I've ended up with a catastrophic problem with my OS which caused me to re-install. These issues happened immeadiatly after using the utility so I can confidently blame them. Now I stay away.

I'm not an expert but I suspect that each time OSX has an update that these utitlities are not keeping in step quick enough, and they end up writing to locations that have changed etc. (Just guessing here)

The old saying "if it's working don't break it" is very true!!

Sorry to say Allan but Disk Warrior totally hosed my OSx. This happened after using Disk Warrior with no trouble at all for quite a while and then one day.. Bam!.. I was getting kernal panics etc.

Re-installed OSX and everything was fine. This was on Tiger and i had a G5 Power Mac. So it was a while ago. But never had the nerve to try it again!

I agree, it was highly recommended to me, and worked well until it killed my G5. I'd be interested to hear the current feedback. Maybe I'll get an update if they have improved things!

I started downloading 'MacKeeper' a moment ago (Before I came acress this forum of course). During the download process, the percentge of download was very suspicious, going from 0% to 300% all the way to over 1000% in a few seconds. I magaged to force quit using the keyboard shortcut, as the usual quit wouldn't work.

This has never happened to me and I will never consider anything from ZeoBit.

Anyone else experience this before, please let me know.

Cheers,

Mike

Thomas is more or less correct, though whether MacKeeper falls into the technical definition of 'malware' or not is rather irrelevant to the end-user experience, but at the very least you should clean out your browser caches, where MK will more than likely have stuck some little suprises that could cause repeated pop-ups.

In Safari menubar, choose ‘Safari > Reset Safari’. Make sure all the options are checked.

This will not only clear out your caches, but everything else stored by the browser. Don’t worry, it won’t affect your bookmarks, but it will reset your ‘top sites’ and history.

If you use Firefox, go to the menubar, choose ‘Tools > Clear Recent History…’ and choose ‘Everything’. Again, it’ll clear everything out but won’t delete your bookmarks.

Obviously, if you use any other browsers like Opera or something you’ll have to find the same options for those too.

Wow! So glad I looked up this discussion before following the impulse to download Mackeeper. From past experience, I'm always a bit suspicious of software that interacts with or alters system-level components, but I almost fell for Mackeeper's claim of being the No.1 system utility for the Mac. Thank you all for bringing me back to my senses. No thanks Mackeeper, I'll leave my OS in Apple's excpert hands.

Very interesting thread. Only reason I'm here is because of an email I received (I'll get to that later).

I installed MacKeeper over 6 months ago. So far I have had no problems at all. I don't seem to have the popup problem or have experienced any performance issues (27" iMac, 12GB ram, 1TB HD, multiple external drives). I run Disk Utility every week and seldom is anything out of whack. It found tons of duplicate files and did let me know of a couple sketchy downloads and files. I guess you could say "good user experience". I have no complaints.

THIS is my issue and it's a BIG one. It's about TRUST:

This morning I received this email from ZeoBit.

Hello From the MacKeeper Street Team!

Official Street Team Invitation

Hello,

I would like to start by saying thank you for being a MacKeeper user. We value your support of our software and sincerely hope that MacKeeper has become an integral part of your Mac. We here at ZeoBit are always working hard to constantly improve MacKeeper and we are proud to invite you to become a part of that!

MacKeeper now needs your help!

You probably already know that ZeoBit's MacKeeper is a popular software and with nearly 15 million downloads, you can find real reviews and links to our product at many popular Mac-related websites like MacUpdate, Applegazete, and countless others. Many of these actual review sites rate MacKeeper as a 5 star utility, but not all. The bad thing about the internet is that anyone can have their reputation destroyed at any time and for any reasons and in the last few months we have become a victim of a massive "Negative P.R. Campaign" by an unethical competitor and we would like to make a team of "Real MacKeeper Users and Fans" to help spread the word of real users and real people. We need just a few seconds of your time to just write down how MacKeeper has helped you or if you find any value in our product. You can do as little or as much as you want and we want nothing more than your valuable opinion.

We need you to join our team!

Today I would like to invite you to become not just a regular user, but a real part of the MacKeeper team. If you don't have time or your not interested in helping us, no problem and we just appreciate you using MacKeeper.

I believe that you can help us with just a few seconds of your time to share your thought and views. We believe that if we build a team of people who use and like our products then we can challenge the myths about MacKeeper that are being spread all over the web. We want real people like you telling your real user experience. Are you interested and will you help me?

What Benefits will you get as a Team Member?

I know your time is valuable and for our Street Team members we will give you a Free upgrade of the all new generation of MacKeeper 2012 that was recently launched at MacWorld/iWorld 2012.

This new version of MacKeeper 2012 has over 170 improvements! You can have the chance to get an additional license that you can give as a gift or put on an additional Mac. We will also have additional gifts and prizes for our street team members as a token of our deep appreciation of you spending a few minute of your time. If you value your MacKeeper application please consider joining our Street Team. This is a no pressure offer and you can stop anytime you want.

What will you do as a team member?

This is the easy part, you just share your opinion and views about MacKeeper online. Share your experience with other people on the web and with us, because your voice and opinion matters! We need you and your help and nothing else. Just send me a message and I will be happy to give you more information to get started and get you your FREE Upgrade or Additional Free License. Don't worry we won't bother you if your not interested, we just really need help getting real experiences out and that requires reaching out to MacKeeper users like you. Thank you again!

I work in eComm and marketing. We run many different ecomm sites (and I'm starting a few of my own). I hated traditional retail because of the rampant "pay to play" payola that was needed to get a product on the shelf. This reeks just the same. It's bad to "recruit" your customers to become PR shills for your company. Making a Facebook page for your company is one thing - it's an open forum for people to share their likes and dislikes about a company or product, it's a whole different thing to ask your customers to actively counteract negative publicity on an anonymous basis. Now, I could be wrong and you won't be asked to do this anonymously - if so, I stand corrected, but if not it's a bad PR model that will only bite you hard in the end.

I you send an email out saying, "Guys, we're getting trashed in the media. If you got good things to say about us now would be a great time to do it. We need the help. Thanks!" No free upgrade offer or bonus gift or prizes. I'd be all over that. Like I said, I like the product, but this kind of stunt smells.

It's impossible to "make" a viral campaign. It just never works out well. People are becoming too "Net Sophisticated" to fall for much anymore. Stop trying.
