This is not a hardware issue. Me and my flatmate both have iPhone 4's and I have tried many different cables and 5 different charging options: Laptop, 2 different plugs and 2 different docking stations.

If it's hardware - it's inside the phone, and buying cables every day won't fix this.

The only difference I know is he has not upgraded to iOS5 yet.

what OS versions are people using when having this difficulty?

Yeah, this happened to me too. (Charger not supported) I use the regular APPLE charger sold by APPLE. The problem started slow, only every couple of days. Then every day at least once. Then every charge. Phone will now die in a couple of hours and there is nothing I can do. 😟

1. I cleaned out alot of dust and lint from charger port. Did not fix problem

2. System restore, no luck.

3. Downloaded new software to phone, no luck.

4. Trickle charge or car charger? Havent tried it yet

5. Attempted different outlets in the house, no luck.

6. Threw the phone because I was mad, made me feel better. (not recommended)

I don't know how the phone connects to computer vs charger but it seems to connect to the computer just fine and updates with no problem.

Do you think this is a battery problem? Am I (a broke guy) going to have to give Apple (some rich guys) more money to fix their product? 😕

I FIXED IT

Holy $#!t it's charging.

Hello, I posted the post above. I tried everything and nothing worked. I didnt want my phone to fail last night so i had turned it off. (Held down the circle button at bottom and the lock button at top) to power boost it off.

I turned it on just 5 minutes ago to give it one more chance to redeem itself and IT CHARGES NOW!!!

Hmm... Maybe it did need to be restored and then shut off for a few hours. I dont think it was the dust because it still updated

Conclusion: The phone wasnt charging due to a software issue. Restoring the phone and downloading the new software didnt fix it untill i turned it off (POWER SHUT DOWN) or whatever its called. Shut down for a couple hours. When I turned it on it started charging.

I don't know how much this is going to help, but it appears to be a current (electrical) issue.

I have two iPhone 4 devices (I write software for them); one is at iOS 4, the other iOS 5. They have always been happy charging off of the (powered) USB hub on my desk (which is connected to my MBP). Just now, they started complaining.

Details:

  • All charging cords are from Apple (they are even the newer squared-edge connector which I first saw from my iPad).
  • I have tested both iPhone 4 devices: first connected to the USB hub, and then connected directly to the MBP.
  • I have tested with multiple cords and with multiple ports on the USB hub.

In all cases, the iPhone's are happy when connected to the MBP and are all doom-and-gloom when connected to the hub.

It is well known that modern Mac USB ports make more current available than required by the USB specification; this is why iPads charge happily when connected to Macs (iPads want more current than USB normally provides).

End result: the amount of current available to the phone for charging from my USB hub is below its desired minimum charge requirement, so it is showing me the warning. What has changed and why is a whole different story ... the USB hub was no longer making "solid" electrical contact; I was able to fix the problem by plugging the hub into a different outlet.

And yes, cleaning the iPhone or dock connectors can make a difference: dirty connections cause less efficient transfer of electricity, effectively reducing current.

And, again, yes, changing cords can make a difference; a well-used (worn) cord may not have all of its wires intact; again, effectively reducing current.

So, I hope my little journey into the land of the yellow warning sign helps someone else; it was certainly frustrating for me (but of course, the *is* an explanation).

After it was fixed, it again stopped charging.

I took my phone to the apple store, the employee who helped me said he never seen this happen before. (Where the phone WILL update but WILLNOT charge), His solution was to replace the phone.

Since I'm no longer under warranty.

I am going to replace the battery by myself ordered off amazon, following directions off Youtube.com. I'll write another final post once completed. I havent ordered the battery yet (about 10 bucks) but ill let you know how it goes.

I've cleaned my phone female connectors and male charging connectors with a Qtip dipped lightly in Alcohol followed by a blowing of compressed air and my charging issue still persists. The ONLY charger I can charge my phone with that works effectively 100% of the time is my truck charger. However the male charging wire that came with the phone works rarely*(ONLY with a lot of contortions and manipulation) when connected to the AC/DC connection. I can sometime get it to connect to the USB hub on my computer and it may backup with ITunes but it no longer charges and I have to go thru the same contortions and manipulation song and dance that I do with the AC/DC charger.. I've purchased a new charging cable only to have the same issues with in home charging. Do you or anyone reading this plea for help, have any ideas as to what could resolve these issues, so that I can update my phone on my laptop AND charge it too?
