I started having this same issue 1 day before I upgraded to OS5.1. After calling apple care I convinced them that this is not a cable issue since I have used 5 different apple USB cables and my phone charger - still does not want to charge as normal. I am replacing the phone & cable at the apple store today since its still under my extended apple care plan.

Think I figured out the problem. It's not the cables it's the voltage in the outlet. Tried my gfs sons iPhone on my charger and it didn't work. I put it on the iPhone and still didn't work. Went into a room on the other end of the house and plugged into a different charger and it worked. I then brought the charger from the bedroom out to the other room and it worked. The oem wires work better but the ebay one works just as well

I have an iPhone 3GS and I've read through all the responses and have tried everything from using OEM charger cables to using a different power source as well as cleaning the connectors and I still get that annoying yellow triangle with the "cannot be charged with this accessory" message. I've even restored the phone at least 4 times and no luck. The other problem is that my external speaker works for certain things like the ringer, but doesnt work for my music, or when placing a call on loud speaker. Losing faith in Apple very fast! Anybody else experienced what I have aand hve you managed to get it resolved?

Hi Everyone, I too have been having this problem now for over a month. I tried most of the suggestions here without success.

However, last night I was charging my phone and it stopped at 66% with this message. I was so tired I decided to leave it until the morning and left it plugged in with this message displaying. When I woke up the phone was charged to 100% with no error message.

I wokeup this morning to the dreadded "Charging is not supported with this..." Yellow triangle error. I tried a known working charger and cable with still no luck.. I read somewhere someone suggested putting the phone into Aircraft mode and switching off the phone before connecting, this didn't work. However my 3GS was able to sync with iTunes but wouldnt charge.

The long and the short of it as the phone is out of warranty Apple wanted £119 for a replacement handset so I started googling, alot of forums point towards a bug with the OS with verious work arounds, none of these worked. I tried cleaning the USB connector which looked clean, that didn't work either. I googled repair companies and came across iPatch in Leeds (My home town) phoned them up and was told they knew what the fault could be suggested I baught the iPhone in. I dropped off the phone and half an hour later went to pick it up and was shown and taken though what the fault was with the defective part. It turns out moisture had got into the USB charging connector and started curroding the connectors, I can assume it was sweat from when I used the phone to listen to music while at the gym.

If your phone is out of warranty it maybe worth looking out a professional 3rd party company to have a look, quote and to repair. I was very satisfied with the service, speed and cost with my repair. If you want to do a DIY job I came across this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IDdlbT7IBwA&feature=player_embedded

I would have done this myself but I didn't want to wait while ordering a new dock connector.

DIY parts - Dock Connector £2.99 - http://www.360upgrades.co.uk/iphone-dock-connector-chargingport-flex-p-665.html

Repair by iPatch £35.00 - http://www.ipatchonline.co.uk/

Good luck!

I've been having this problem now since upgrading the iOS. Today I decided to have the dock connector replaced with a new one. Worked fine for 10 mins then 'Charging is not supported with this accessory.' appeared yet again.

I could upgrade to an iPhone 4 or 4S, but do I really want to be stuck in another 24 month contract with no option to upgrade to the iPhone 5 when it comes out in a few months time?

I need a phone that can actually charge and I need it now because I have sick relatives that I need to stay in contact with. Since I cannot charge the now obselete iPhone 3GS I'm afraid its going to have to be:

GOODBYE Apple

HELLO Samsung.

To be honest I don't even think this an iOS problem because at one point I did a complete factory restore and at the point in the process when there was no software on the iPhone apart from the firmware it still popped up with this ridiculous message. This lead me to believe this message is hard coded into the firmware.
