We also had this problem (error 1004 when trying to download or upgrade an app from the App Store) appear after using our iPad 2 for several problem-free weeks.

Rebooting did not help. We waited several days to see if this was a transient error in Apple's server, but this did not help either.

Finally I resolved it by going into the Settings application and entering a security ID for the credit card with which we registered the device.

If find it pretty amazing that the iPad only issues this cryptic "Error 1004" message instead of providing some more details.

If the time zone is not working for you try and type your city location in. I had mine set to NY as I live on the east coast but started receiving this error and after reading some post looked into my time zone and tried typing in my city name and selected the correct one and the problem instantly fixed it's self. My apps are now updating!

Error 1004 is related to having the connection to the store blocked.

There are a number of ways to fix this error.

1 way is correctly configure your security software or disable it, if security software needs updates make sure its up to date.

2 is attempt to reset the network settings. Settings>General>Reset>Reset network settings. This will reset your networks so you will need to reconnect to your wi fi network.

3 make sure everything with your account is set up as far as payment information.

This is related to a network error blocking access to the store. You can also attempt to connect to another network to isolate to that network your connected to.

and as always like pkdaly said, a good reboot can fix many issues. MANY. Just try it!

Okay, I followed the post and did everything. The final key was by michalo13 (thanks) and I wanted to summarize everything into one post. I did ALL of these and the end result was satisfactory downloading/updating from my iPad. FWIW - I am on iPad1...

On the iPad:

  1. Settings> General> Reset> Reset Network Settings
  2. Settings> General> Date & Time> Enable Manual Settings (specific city helped)
  3. Settings> General> Date & Time> Set Automatically
  4. Settings> Safari> Clear Cookies (didn't clear history or cache)

In iTunes:

Store> View My Account> Edit Payment Information (re-enter everything)

This is usually as a result of conflict in apple store verification conflict, simply put, a kind of confusion in apple store account verification. I had same problem.. Follow these simple steps to resolve:

Open Settings

Open store setting and logout the account if already logged in

Open safari setting scroll down, clear history, cookies and cache

Restart your iPad by pressing down the standby button for 5 seconds till you get a "Slide to turn off" button on top

Press same button to turn on

Congratulations, error 1004 is no more showing on your app installations
