I had the same issue and solved it by disabling and later again enabling the Noise Cancelation. This setting can be found via Settings -> General -> Accessibility -> (Hearing) Phone Noise Cancellation.

So it appears this hasnt had a solid answer yet to resolve the issue.

Follow Article http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414

After the restore process DO NOT RESTORE FROM BACKUP.

Choose the setup as new- Disconnect the device.

Follow Prompts on screen- once back at home page - test make a call - if doesnt work or only works on speaker phone- you have a Hardware issue and need the device replaced or serviced.

This just worked for me! I could only hear out of the speaker on a call (when speaker was pressed). I thought I'd give it a this a go to listen to a voicemail, repeatedly press speaker in the top right. At first nothing happened (I must have pressed it about 30 times!). I then started playing with the volume buttons whilst I pressed the speaker button and noticed, when not on speaker, the volume read 'headphones' on the screen. Ah!

Maybe it thought there were headphones plugged in the whole time? I cleaned out the headphone jack with a cotton bud in case there was anything there (moisture, dust etc). Speaker on and off once more and it worked! Bizarre! I hope it stays working 😀

Thanks for the tip, I never would hve tried this otherwise!

Good luck everyone!

My iPhone 4 had no sound or mic during phone calls, but facetime/skype/voice recorder/... all worked fine.

Tried restore with and without backup, updated to 7.1.1 which was just released, then I tried some of the cardboard placements and adjusting a screw near the camera, but nothing fixed it.

I have however managed to resolve my problem, so I thought I'd share it here.

I found this video which helped me:

Taking out the logic board itself is explained here:

http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/iPhone+4+Logic+Board+Replacement/3143

I cut an approximately 3x3 mm square from a credit card and plcaed on top of the chip, after reassembling everything I could call again after a week of not being able to.

I was apprehensive about it at first, but the only tricky bit was getting the shield off the chips and that turned out to be not too hard. Some of the screws are super tiny though, so make sure you keep track of all of them!

Everyone, I think I know what's going on here. It has to do with the internal wiring. Something inside the phone is either shorting to ground or it doesn't have a good ground. (Forget the cleaning routine; these people are likely just twisting their phones while cleaning them.)

To test the theory, start a phone call. During the phone call and with the volume all the way up, grab the phone by both ends and give it a little twist. It should immediately work! Stop at this point because you know that the phone has a problem.

Now you could open it up as in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oAAda5Xj3-s for example. You would need a very small and specialized screwdriver that's compatible with these phones. IFIXIT makes this P5 pentalobe for a few dollars. You might, however, take your phone into an Apple store, show them this forum thread and suggest that many, many iPhones appear to have a systemic problem that they need to fix.

I had all these same problems/symptoms. If, after receiving an incoming call or having someone pick up on an outgoing call, I hit the speakerphone button then I could complete the call with speakerphone. I spent three hours at the Apple store only to be told it was a hardware issue and that I could live with it or buy a new phone. I decided to live with it but it quickly became a pain to always have to use speakerphone with calls. If you have the same problem-I may have an answer. I tried EVERYTHING I found online and nothing worked for me until I found my answer by accident. I was trying to listen to a voice mail someone left when I realized I had the same problem for VM's as I did for calls. I hit the speaker button inside VM (upper right corner) so I could at least hear the VM. One day while listening to a VM this way I got really mad and hit the speaker button 4-5 times in a row as I was very angry! It ended on speaker off but as I went to hit the button again I could hear a little bit out of the earpiece! I quickly hit the sound up button on the side of the phone and turned the sound way up and it was working! It lasted about three calls and then stopped working again. When it stopped during a call I tried hitting the speaker button a few times on the keypad during the call but it didn't work so I finished the call on speaker. As soon as the call was over I went into VM, played an old VM and hit the speaker button there until it started working again. It took about 7 times but did work! This time it lasted over a wekk then I went through the whole process again. This third time has now lasted 2 months and is still working perfectly for me. I know this is long but if it works for anyone else it's worth it! I don't know why the speaker button on calls didn't fix it, only in VM and maybe it will be different for others, but I'm convinced it is some weird software issue and until they solve it, I have this little trick working for me. Good Luck!

I had exactly the same problem on brand new iPhone 4S. Only 2 weeks old.

In the end i backed up the phone then restored back to original OS using iTunes. I tested phone and sound problems were resolved. I then restored the backup and tested again and sound problems still resolved. I think there is something weird going on in the OS that causes this problem.

PROBLEM SOLVED (SORRY FOR MY ENGLISH, I USED GOOGLE TRANSLATE)

4 months ago , I bought an iPhone 4 ios 7.1.2 16GB priced at 60 euros , I knew not hear the loudspeaker and the microphone goes in calls , but otherwise perfectly functional applications ! We looked on the internet and stuff like methods , but did not work , I tried to downgrade to iOS 7.1.2 software to 6.1.3 did not work, until I found a video which I said that 's stupid , but not I had that try , and I said I had nothing to lose. I would put the following link : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IGTu-_f2XYk
but before fitting the plastic piece I used a hair dryer to heat the chip respectively , we have installed heated plastic, after which we mounted back in the phone card !, I did not expect any work by Nohow but it functioned successfully!

I had the same problem, no sound was coming from earpiece, whereas Speakerphone and headphone was working fine. When using volume button, it read "headphones" on the screen. OS or system assumes your headphone is still ON.

I tried all different suggestion which didn't worked. What i tried was "Close all the opened app, and thats it, and it worked fine. Hope it works for you too.

Good luck.

Same thing…. No sound through earpice. I could only hear through headphones and speakers. My iPhone 5 was acting like the the headphones were plugged in when they weren’t. I could tell because when I adjusted the volume the notification said “Headphones”. I tried several things I found on this site and others. What eventually fixed it was cleaning out the charging port (lightning bolt) on the iPhone 5. Once it was cleaned the "Volume" notification would appear when I adjusted the volume buttons.
