delete wrong apple ID from the appstore login

when I try to update my apps on the ipad the box that pops up has the wrong apple ID in it and I can not change it no matter what I do. I have re set the info in the settings and when viewed there the info is correct. When I get into the app store I still get the wrong ID no matter what I do... anyone have any suggestions

This 'left hand not knowing what the right is doing' is extremely frustrating - why do not the devices store a single user ID (at least for the person logged in at the time) so that this can't happen?

What do you mean the App Store "demands a password for the wrong Apple ID"? What are you attempting to do that even requires a password at that point?

Well, I finally figured it out ... some time ago, I retired and needed to change my email address. Because Apple uses email addresses as permanent IDs, this proposed change became a problem; after following guidance from an Apple adviser, I thought that I'd solved this problem. However, when I visited the Apple app store a few days ago, some of the apps bought under the by-then defunct ID needed updating, so the app-store app insisted that I enter the password for that ID, even though I hadn't intended to update these apps; it wouldn't give me any access (under my new ID) so that I could download the sport-related apps that I required. After a couple of hours of frustration, I gave up and carried out a factory reset on my iPhone 5 ('erase all contents and settings') and sacrificed all previously paid-for apps and films - fortunately not a huge investment. However, it did take several further hours to update to v10.3 and reinstall a similar raft of apps as before. At least I now have a working iPhone.

Many years ago, I was a programmer, later an analyst; I soon learned that one should NEVER choose a non-stable ID for any long-lasting object or concept. Hopefully Apple has learned this by now - it should ensure that every user has a permanent, stable ID, which can (or should) be associated with one or more (potentially-changing) email addresses.

Thanks, GB, for asking for more details, I'm sorry that I did not answer sooner - I was away from home and had an unreliable phone signal.

OK, so that is why I asked what you were trying to do. Updating and re-downloading apps do require that that Apple ID that purchased the app be the Apple ID that continues to provide the password, since legally, that Apple ID owns the media.

When you change your email address, unless the change, in any way involves an @me, @me, or @icloud email address as the Apple ID address, then you should be changing the address on that account to then new address. You have a single account. The email address is simply a user ID.

Sounds like you may have been told to set up a separate ID long ago, which is really not the way you want to go, because, in reality, you are setting up a brand new, separate Apple account.

Best advice I can give on that is to keep the password on the old Apple account the same as the password on the current Apple account. That way, if you are asked for a password, it won't matter which account it is for.

Hi. I had the same problem and almost gave up. But finally I tried something that did work for me. I hs an iPhone that belonged to someone else, i managed to reset it back to new (or at least I thought I had) and used it for some time without any problems. Suddenly I had to update an app and I was being asked for the old user's Apple ID. But my App Store was connected to MY Apple ID. Somehow this kept happening even though I singed out and in over and over again. What I did was deleting the app I had to update and downloaded it again. It appears that once you downloaded an app with a certain Apple ID you cannot update it with another one. Hope this helps you.

Sorry, but if you are having the same problem, then it is because of the same reason which has been explained throughout this thread. You have a different Apple ID that owns that media. It is always going to own it, so you can use the password for that Apple ID, or your can delete the item, and re-purchase, or re-download it if it was free, with your own, current Apple ID signed into iTunes, and then those items will now also be owned by the current Apple ID, so no more password requests.

Cheers,

Yes, it is old - if you pay attention to the date, it clearly states 2012.

As for your second post, the app is the app that is asking for a different Apple ID password. If you take the time to read the thread instead of commenting on 5 year old posts, then you will be able to follow the flow.

What is your actual issue? This thread is about being asked for a different Apple ID password when trying to update an app. Is that the problem you are having? If not, then what is the problem you are having?

Not helpful, Chris, and not very smart of you either. I am having the same problem with a used ipad I purchased from someone else. None of your responses answer the question. How do we delete an old apple ID from the app store and use our current one? Why is this even an issue, and why hasn't Apple fixed it yet? I shouldn't even have to be doing this, it should be automatic when I sign in with my ID.

Delete the apps downloaded by the previous owner, they (like everyone else downloaded by an account) are tied to his account so only his account can download updates to those apps.

Why is this even an issue, and why hasn't Apple fixed it yet?

The previous owner should have wiped the iPad prior to selling it, there isn't anything for Apple to fix.

**************** When I sign into iCloud on the iPad in question, ALL associated apps and functions should use my iCloud account info. No one should need to wipe the iPad for this to occur automatically. Yet, it doesn't. Should be a simple fix, yet it persists as an issue. A known issue. For 5 years now. All apps should revert to my iCloud profile, period. All apps I didn't personally download should auto delete or otherwise not appear. Certainly the App Store shouldn't automatically assume that the previous owner's info is the correct sign in info for the App Store once I've signed into iCloud and everything else with my own account info. This is just stupid, and poor operational design on Apple's part.

? Of course they shouldn't, and what has iCloud got to do with downloaded content anyway ? If you've restored to a backup you are downloading exactly what was in that backup - content is tied to the account that bought and downloaded them from the store, they are permanently tied to that account.

The I’d on my apps acount shows is like this

Myaccount. Instead of

myaccount@myisp.com

I am able to login into my iCloud, and in settings, iCloud password. I can log out then log back in. I can logout in the app homepage then log back in. I can log in using my credentials all day long, but when I try to down load app I see the user name minus the@ info. Because I have done it so many times it reply’s that the account is blocked. But yet I can use my credentials everywhere else but here. GO FIGURE

That’s easier said than done. I have tried to reset in different ways. I went to apple store and they think that the image on the phone has gone bad. I am going to reset and erase the entire phone and manually install my apps. I think that if I buy a new phone and transfer the old image I could be in the same boat. This was confirmed by the apple store staff
