Need Updated Browser

Hi Gang

I'm looking for a newer browser, but I'm staying with 10.4.11

Fire Fox 4 will not work with 10.4.11, neither will Safari 5

I've also read complaints about compatibility issues with Fire Fox 3.6

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanx

Mike

I just use Firefox 3.6. There still seem to be minor updates every few weeks and there aren't many web sites I encounter which don't seem to work. Even those I do encounter I can't specifically say they don't work because of the old browser - people tend to code for Windows users. I also have Safari 3.0.4 which sometimes works with the sites where FF doesn't. After that I figure I didn't particularly need to see that video or hear that music.

I do use a number of FF plugins which didn't seem to work with TenFourFox when I tried it a month ago. I don't think I noticed TFF running any faster than FF for the 20 minutes I used it.

I have been using TFF 5.0 for quite awhile (G4/7450), IMHO far superior to FF3.6.21 because I can use many FF4 + extensions, also quicker, more responsive than FF 3. As of TFF 6.0.1, there is no support for plugins (for security reasons) which they remove from TFF. As a non-techie, I have come to rely on those plugins so I am staying with TFF 5.0, will not update any further, although TFF 6.0.1 seems to be much quicker. Since TFF configures from FF 3.6.21, it is essential to retain your FF 3.6.21 in your apps folder + continue to update so TFF can update from your FF profile. I also, as an extra browser, use OmniWeb 5.11, which, I believe is built on the same framework as Safari 5, so it's like running Safari 5 on Tiger. The TFF website has been offline for awhile as the owner is negotating with another ISP to host it, but you can access the TFF development blog to follow the project, get the browser. Ken.

I haven't installed TFF yet and am puzzled and confused by what you say above about Ff 3.6.21 (now .22) The link I gave earlier to your very helpful discussion with a TFF developer says something which I read as different from what you say above.

Q...Must I continue to keep FF3 on my computer as the settings repository for 10.4fox or can I uninstall FF3. I can't seem to locate a similar, complete profile for 10.4fox, can't seem to even locate the 10.4fox install location. I am quite willing to leave FF3 on my iMac if that means a smooth running 10.4fox. Thanks. Ken.

A: You can remove Fx3 safely, yes (simply drag it to the Trash). This will not disturb your settings, which are normally in your Library folder.

Q: Thanks. Are you suggesting just to move the FF3 icon from the Applications folder to the Trash but leaving the Firefox folder in User/Library/Application Support, as is, where it is, because that's where 10.4fox gets my settings, profile from? Ken.

A: Exactly.

What happens when there are no more updates for Ff 3.6 , which by all accounts will be gone by year's end?

Are the updates for TFF available independent of Ff 3.6? And where do you find them?

In response to your second comment above, have you seen that floodgap, the TFF site, and Cameron Kaiser's site, are finally up and running again as of September 23?

I am no techie but once Mozilla stops updating FF 3.6.22 + TFF incorporates those updates, then we just rely on the updates for TFF. As of the current version 6, TFF is no longer supporting plug-ins, they say for security reasons, which freaks me out because I count on those plug-ins to play various video formats, other content, so I will stop updating TFF as of version 5 to retain the full plug-in functionality. For me this is an excellent compromise because I can use extensions built for FF 4 + above on TFF, which will continue to allow me to use Tiger with a more contemporary browser. I have been using TFF for months, think its quicker, more secure, more functionality, that's just me.

Mrs. H. As far as I know, no version of TFF will run on your Intel MBP. TFF is only for Tiger PPC users. From scanning their website, they hate Intel Macs + their operating systems. Their main goal is to support PPC Tiger users, at least that's what I get. The following is from the TFF website:

TenFourFox requires a G3 Power Macintosh, Mac OS Xv10.4.11 or Mac OS X v10.5.8, 100MB of free disk spaceand 256MB of RAM. Video playback will be poor on systems slower than 1.25GHz;we recommend a G5. Intel Macintoshes are not supported (and will bemercilessly mocked).

Hi Ken, no offense or discouragement intended, but...

Or an intelMac running Rosetta, replying from TFF on Intel as we speak! 🙂...

Not even 10.4/Tiger, but 10.5.8 Leopard... & I think I tried it in 10.6.5 also, but if you need proof I'll try that again... might even work in 10.7.x with th Rosetta hack don't know, & as far as 10.4.11 I suspect it will, but haven't got 10.4 on this iMac yet. 🙂

Thanks again BDA for the continued proof/support that TFF will work on Mr H's Intel MBP.

What about this plugin non-support? I only use Flash, and only occasionally. I saw a workaround at TFF - MacTubes, have you used that?

I love WOT and NoScript, thanks to your earlier recommendation and that's why I want to stick with Ff or go to TFF. Off topic, but a fun YouTube (remembering my penchant for all things from India) you might enjoy this, if you can access it : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LxnZUjeLw08

Have you stopped a v5?

Does TFF offer its own updates - I'm afraid I still don't get the relationship between Ff 3 and TFF - are they linked in some way so that when updates stop for Ff they will too for TFF - kinda defeats my move. I think the answer to this must be no, there will be updates on TFF alone.

In Ff I have prefs set thusly - is there a similar option in TFF?

Thanks for putting up with my constant insecurity on this,

Once again, for TenFourFox, Firefox 3.x is now utterly irrelevant. The purpose of TFF is to bring to Tiger users the functionalitry of current versions of Firefox so that we can go where Firefox 3.x can't. The current non-beta version of TFF is v. 6.0.1, which is far, far ahead of Firefox 3.x that you inexplicably keep bringing up. The current beta version is TFF 7.0b.1.

Sep 26, 2011 1:17 AM in response to Mrs H

Here's TFF 6.0.1 on the same Intel iMac running 10.6.5, (seems a bit slow, but have maybe 100 Windows & Tabs open, too much going on to find out more about the slow speed)...

I do get these errors in Console on launching TFF 6.0.1 in 10.6.5...
