When I access this forum using the iPad, the toolbar with fonts, font characteristics, paragraph format, insert image, link, emoticon etc. appears for maybe a half-second and then disappears. Is that normal or is there something that I'm doing wrong?

You're right--I should give Atomic a try, instead of just gnashing my teeth.

Safari's performance on the iPad on the iPad forums falls into "the jokes just write themselves" category.

No they won't notice about your point total--they'll be too busy dealing with complaints about the absence of Flash. It does make me wonder why the necessity for the constant signing in. Are they afraid we'll hack ourselves to the next level?

There is a 15 minute time limit to edit your post - on a computer - I'm pretty sure. I use Safari and iCab on my iPad and if I walk away from the iPad or the computer for longer than 10 minutes or so, I have to sign back in - no matter what browser or device I use.

That is a relatively new annoying feature that The site designers must have implemented because I used to be able to stay signed in all night. I could go to bed, leave the iPad or computer signed into this site, and be able to pick up where I left off. Now I feel like I'm signing in every 10 minutes.

I have no preference regarding the requirement to sign in after a brief timer but I do believe that the editing timer should be brief. I see it as primarily a mechanism to correct mis-spellings and/or poor grammar. If the timer is too long and the poster changes the content or meaning of the post, the responses will be a mess.

Guys, there have been loads of discussion on this on the 'Using Apple Support Communities' forum.

These forums just don't work correctly on the iPad and it is long overdue for Apple to have fixed this.

For me, Safari doesn't show the formatting bar when 'replying'. Although I can get the formatting bar in Atomic or iCab (the best browser on the iPad, IMO), the keyboard won't popup.

So, I am stuck with Safari for use of this forum.

Yes, lg, there have too many discussions about this. But KP claimed that the edit functions worked with the Atomic Browser. It doesn't work for me. I have the same experience that you describe, the formatting bar appears but the keyboard does not pop up. I also think that iCab is the best overall browser for the iPad, but the one browser that I have the most success with on this site is Safari. Other than using it for this site, I would probably delet Safari if I could do so.

;)

Sorry, but I thought it was working when I tried it a couple of days ago, I thought that I'd tried typing and that it had worked - obviously I was wrong. You can get the keyboard if you go into the HTML option on the right end of the edit bar (though that then hides the edit bar), but you then don't get the 'cursor' or the hourglass repositioning function - which is no good if you're as good a typist as me and have to keep going back to correct spellings and add missing words (as you don't appear to be able to unless you delete back to where you want to correct).

Identifying the browser as something other than iPad shows the edit bar, but it doesn't seem to allow the keyboard to be used (I thought it did when I tried it a couple of days ago). You can use the HTML option on the end of the edit bar (which hides the edit bar), but you then don't get the 'cursor' or the hourglass repositioning function - which I suppose is okay if you're a good typist (unlike me) and don't have to keep going back to correct spellings and add missing words (as you don't appear to be able to unless you delete back to where you want to correct). And going back to the 'full editor' with the edit bar does allow you to add an emoticon, but it adds it before the text that you've just entered
