iPhoto 11 DOES NOT save edits and you cannot export them

I have seen numerous posts regarding the inability to export or save photo edits on iPhoto 11. The same people keep recommending the same solutions in these posts, but those solutions do not work. It may be that this problem is limited to Macbook Air laptops or something like that but the solutions that are provided do not discuss the type of Mac being used, etc. Simply put, this problem is widespread and no workable solution has been suggested. Any new ideas would be most appreciated. Thanks.

hi i have been having the same problem but i think i have found the solution (certainly works on mine) it seems to be about the apple ID's with mine. because i am a long term mac user my old apple id(not an email address) was not accepted as an icloud one so i had to use my mobileme one, any image i had in my library with my old user ID will not save any edits to it, but my new ones imported since the id change will, so i think the only way around it would be to export the entire library then reimport under the new ID ( a major pain with 13'023 photos) i have tried this with one pic and it worked

Hello,

I have iLife '11 and have had the same sharpness problem since iLife '08. Tried all possible "solutions" and nothing worked. I did some research a couple of years ago and found this link:

http://support.apple.com/kb/TA23135?viewlocale=en_US

In case you cannot open the link here is the most important part:

"When you view an image at less than full size, iPhoto smooths it (a technique known as anti-aliasing) to get rid of artifacts that result from scaling down the photo. The relationship between anti-aliasing and sharpening is a trade-off; although anti-aliasing does not modify the actual image file, it does counter the effect of sharpening when viewing the image at less than full size.

Because of this, if you sharpen a photo, close it, then reopen it again at a less than 100-percent view, you may get the impression that your sharpness changes were not saved. In reality they were, but since the image has been re-aliased to fit your screen, the image's true sharpness may not be apparent."
(Apple Support Article: TA23135)

The article was modified on July 28, 2011, which makes me belief that the issue is still present and prevalent, and not just isolated to a few people.

I think the problem that ces161616, LRT505, and darrenfrosaltburn are experiencing is actually occurring to everyone ( I might of course be wrong), but people editing photos at 100% would not notice such problem (usually users editing small size photos or medium size photos in very large screens). Probably many people do not notice this sharpness issue (my wife for instance) because the difference could be minimal, and you will still see that all other changes remain once you exit the edit window. But for people that like to edit their photos this is really an issue.

hi lepac the problem i am having is any edits refuse to stay put, even cropping or retouching,

I have the same problem and have tried everything. The changes are visible as long as it's in edit mode, but as soon as click edit again to close the edit options, back the original it goes. It's weird because when I click on edit again, the changes magically come back. Taking screen shots obviously works, but I don't have time for that when I edit a lot of pictures..it should not be this difficult. I like(d) iPhoto, but anyone have suggestions for a different program??

You can get the modified versions, copy them somewhere else and re-import them, and then re-arrange your events. After doing that, you might want to delete the real original if you want to keep your library skinny. Painful but at least this is the only work-around I found! It's better than doing a screenshot since your image will stay full res.

Also, you can identify where your modified files are by using the menu: File->Reveal In Finder -> Modified Files

I sincerely hope someone is looking at this issue. It doesn't seem to affect a lot of people but still...

I'm still on OS 10.6.8 and iPhoto 9.2.1.

iPhoto has the same problem, but not for all pics. I can't tell which, but I think it's for some added in the last 6 months and edited using Photo Elements. I discovered today that if I edit a photo, change anything on the adjust tab, then exit edit mode, it returns to normal behavior. No telling what that's all about, but it's easier than the manual export, import, re-do meta data approach I'd begun using.

Hi All,

Has anybody found a fix for this iPhoto saving issue? I have a wide range of Macs old and brand new. The problem being not being able to save de-noise (edit) for one eample. Oddly crop and retouch work though???

9.2.1 doesnt work by the way...

The only fix seems to be a screen grab which is a rubbish solution for pic from an EOS 7D for example.

I had the same problem and found A solution, but it is definetly not THE solution. Here it goes:

1. Rebuild your library with the iPhoto Library Manager already mentioned. This should give you all your original files but none of the modifications

2. Import the photos from the "Previews" folder from the original library to your new library. These are the edited pictures

3. Move the newly imported photos to the events which they belong to (This can take you quite a while, depending on how many photos you edited).

I think due to some bug iPhoto loses track of the connection between the original and the edited photo. That's why, when you do a Rebuild with iPhoto Library Manager, it is completely blind to the edited photos. I am not sure yet if my newely created library will keep track of the edited photos correctly. I will keep you updated on this.

This is by far the single most annoying and time-consuming bug I've encountered since I switched to Apple. I'm shocked that Apple hasn't released a patch yet if there are so many people complaining about this. This type of bug is not a cosmetic error or a nice-to-have but really a case of breaking the data structure. This really makes me wonder if the switch to Apple was such a good idea. Yes, everything runs really smooth, and the ease of use of apps like iPhoto really amazes me. But when it does go wrong, oh boy, all **** is unleashed.

The fix I found that sticks (but I don't know why) is to go to the adjust tab in edit mode, then change some setting on that tab and save. Changing edits on the other two tabs didn't work. With ~6k photos, this has been an enormous pain. I'd guess this is something I could have automated if i'd take then time to learn how to do that.

Apple should fix this with a release that rebuilds the library and corrects it. This is crazy.
