iPhoto 11 DOES NOT save edits and you cannot export them

I have seen numerous posts regarding the inability to export or save photo edits on iPhoto 11. The same people keep recommending the same solutions in these posts, but those solutions do not work. It may be that this problem is limited to Macbook Air laptops or something like that but the solutions that are provided do not discuss the type of Mac being used, etc. Simply put, this problem is widespread and no workable solution has been suggested. Any new ideas would be most appreciated. Thanks.

Larry,

hi, me again. I'm not here to argue. I've been an Apple devotee since the 80's, currently have 3 Macs, an iPhone, iPad and Apple TV. I've sung Apple's praises long and hard (though the recent dumbing-down of some mac apps has taken a little of the shine off for me). When I posted a few weeks ago I was annoyed, having been working on a photo that would't hold its edits. Again. Normally I don't bash Apple.

This is an old thread and a long one, but you should read it. I know you haven't because, in the light of it, your statements here appear foolish. Briefly: unable to fix this problem, the Original Poster left his computer at an Apple Genius Bar where it was reformatted and everything reinstalled from scratch. The Genius then reproduced the problem. He then copied one of the OP's photos to the store computer and reproduced the problem there. At this point he rightly told the OP that the problem wasn't fixable. That's why I know not to accept your offer to troubleshoot. I've done plenty of it but, from the preceding, I know pushing on is futile.

It's great (for you) that this problem hasn't manifested for you. I don't know enough to hazard a guess at what's going wrong, but I think there's a clue in this thread: one poster has two photos of a landmark, taken at the same time, one of which displays the problem and one that doesn't. There's a clue in there somewhere ...

You can't claim there is no problem in iPhoto until you can reliably edit a photo that someone else can't. And, as the Apple Genius demonstrated, that's not possible. If the problem exists, it's unfixable. And, from the number of unrelated posters in this thread, I think it's fair to say the problem is widespread.

I daresay Apple gave up on this a long time ago, knowing that they were ditching iPhoto for the new Photos app in Yosemite. That will be out soon and, hopefully, this problem will disappear.

Let's be nice and just assume you're clueless.

Ok Mr Apple PR guy obviously trying to deflect blame

I do not work for Apple. I have no shares in the company and no connection with them whatever. I have no interest in deflecting blame from anyone. All I keep saying is that if you want help with your issue then make your own thread with enough details that allows someone to help. It's also nice if you're not rude, bad-mannered and aggressive. As I've commented on this forum before: if some stops you on the street and asks for directions politely you're a lot more likely to help than if someone foaming at the mouth and swearing does. remember everyone who responds here is a volunteer.

I'm having the same issues that ARE FULLY DESCRIBED IN THIS THREAD MANY TIMES in 10.8.5 using, iPhoto 9.4.1. In the year of our Lord 2014, oct 10th

Thing is, this thread goes back to 2011 and predates both 10.8 and iPhoto 9.4.1. So, why would you expect me to re-read this thread just to discover what you're too lazy to write yourself?

You try it yourself and let us know exactly how you succeeded…doesn't sound like you know iPhoto very well. All you have to do is take a few minutes and try it if you know it.

Exporting works exactly as designed on both my Macs, one on 10.9, one on 10.10, both using the current version of iPhoto. I can't recall the specifics of 10.8 and 9.4.1 but I can say that I have never had a problem exporting.

Is that clear and unambiguous for you? Is there another way I can say that the problem you seem to be having is local not systemic?

And why would you restrict access to the new discussion… very suspicious… !!!

Y'all need to keep taking the paranoia pills. I have no ability to restrict access to anything. Like you, I'm just a user of iPhoto. Unlike you I understand how the forum works and am not paranoid.

While your at it you see if you can undo the total dumbed down destruction of bookmark management in Safari 6 …thats another problem you can do a search on and find many complaints… maybe the apple is finally rotting. A known bug that goes unfixed for …4 years?

Dear lord why would I want to do that for you? Why would I want to do that for someone too lazy to go to the Safari forum and ask that question himself.

You have a nice day now.

Hi LRT505,

Since posting your issues with iPhoto 3 years ago, what did you do? Did it ever get fixed? Are you using another photo editing program? Oddly, I never had the problem until this past year even though I have been using iPhoto for thousands of photos over the past 10 years. Just started for me this past summer. Trying to go through all the sites and posts to se if anything has been resolved is exhausting. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Hi All

I am a new Apple user have bought my first Mac Book Pro in spring. But I am finding it very difficult to edit photos. I previously used Photoshop 6.

Do you think it would be worth paying to buy a new version to go on the applemac. I run a little blog/journal of my travels and I have been unable to update it since I got the apple stuff as I just cannot work out how to manipulate resize and rename my photos and file them easily for reuse on the blog.

At first I thought it was me as I am not very technical, but after some internet research it looks as though it may be a fault on the program

I also tried using Photogene on the iPad but when I export to the mac all the edits are lost. I am at my wits end, I have lost most of my followers for what was a promising little blog getting well over a hundred views a day after only a few months.

This works for me consistently. I think it is a permissions problem.

I highlighted the photo that would not save edits, went to File/Show in Finder/ then selected the modified file.
In the finder, I selected the modified photo (that was not actually modified), and clicked "Get Info" (Command I). I changed the permissions so that everyone can Read & Write.

Then I went back to the photo in iPhoto. In the edit menu I chose, Revert to Original, and SAVED the reverted photo.

I was then able to edit again, and iPhoto would save it.

This has been a huge problem for me, and I'm glad I don't have to take the photo OUT of iPhoto any more to fix it!

This question dates from 2011. There have been many versions of both iPhoto and the OS since then. Permissions issues within the Library are best resolved by using iPhoto's own tools.

Back Up first, of course and then hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to check and repair Library permissions.

Two and a half years later I am having this same problem on my iPhoto 9.6.1

Specifically, PNG screenshots taken in iPhone(s) of recent iOS versions can be edited but the edits disappear on closing the edit box in iPhoto.

My solution is the opposite of what MacOS claims to be, easy and convenient, but at least I can use it in the cases I do need to fix up a PNG. No rocket science below, but use at your own discretion and risk. 🙂

- In iPhoto Export the PNG Original as a Maximum size JPG.

- Import the JPG (now a new Original image even if you export and save with the same filename, e.g. to keep your photos in sequence by number).

- Edit the new JPG imported into iPhoto to your heart's content. Each Edit is saved.

- Delete the PNG if you don't need it.

- (Optional) Export the new edited JPG and re-import if you do not want disk space wasted when iPhoto keeps original copies of edited photos).

Hope that helps until I/we find a better replacement for iPhoto which is not as lacking in "library" and integration options (like FaceBook/Flickr/comments/and more) as Photos currently is.

Thanks.

Imran
