hdmi audio support

I have a 2009 MacBook Pro. I bought a Moshi DPI to HDMI adapter and hooked it to the TV. No audio. I knew this may happen so I bought a 3.5 mm to Red/White RCA output and plugged it in the headphone jack on the MacBook and into the TV. Still no audio. Any ideas?

The MDP to HDMI only works with April 2010 and later MBPs.

RCA: do you have a 3.5mm stereo mini plug to RCA adapter, with the 3.5mm plug plugged into the headphone jack? Have you set the proper output in the Sys Prefs > Sound? Have you set the proper input on the TV?

When I plug in the 3.5/RCA to the TV the System Preferences doesn't show any option other than 'headphone" for output. It's Sony TV, I tried to find somewhere to change the input on the TV without success. I tried connecting the RCA to all the available inputs on the TV. No luck.

I've read where connecting a " Mini DisplayPort to DVI (Apple-branded) and then DVI to HDMI" could work. Thanks for your input. Open to suggestions.

If you plug headphones into the headphone jack do you hear sound?

If yes then you need a cable to connect the headphone out (1/8" trs minijack) to whatever your sony tv needs on the input, if (as you mentioned) it is RCA then an adaptor from stereo trs minijack to 2 x mono rca plugs will be needed. You will also need to turn up the volume on the mac to (probably) around 70% to provide enough voltage for reasonable gain on the TV.

On the TV end: you need to connect the RCA (normally red and white) to the proper input on the TV. In some cases, the audio will not work without the video also being connected, so make sure you have them both connected at the same time, and in the proper place. After that, you'll need to change the inputs on the TV. It's like changing channels, only in this case, you're changing inputs.

MDP to DVI or HDMI is what you need to do for video. On your model of MBP that will not carry audio, thus the need for the mini jack to RCA adapter.

Trying to follow you here - Are you distinguishing between a 3.5mm/RCA and and a 1/8"? I looked up 1/8" trs minijack and it looks just like the 3.5mm/RCA I was using. Thanks for your help.

3.5mm and 1/8" are exactly the same thing. Csound1, please do not confuse the issue here.

TO TJK

Read my post again, I never mentioned 3.5mm, duke9 did, you just lost your thread track.

TO DUKE9

I am distinguishing between RCA and MiniJack, which are most certainly not the same, an RCA plug is a 2 wire single channel system carrying signal on the pin and ground on the shield, it will not carry a stereo signal and will not fit into a minijack socket.

So once again IF your tv has rca sockets (reasoned from this"I bought a 3.5 mm to Red/White RCA output") everything I said on my previous post applies, if your tv does not have rca sockets then post its model # etc and I will look up what you need.
