No audio in slideshows

Hey there.

I'm using Apple's latest version of Aperture and have no audio in slideshow at all. That goes for...

...slideshows that were imported from iPhoto (and play back with audio in iPhoto just fine).

...slideshows taht were created in Aperture, using the music that belongs to the chosen theme.

...slideshows that were created in Aperture, using any other music that came with Aperture.

...slideshows that were created in Aperture, using music from my iTunes Library.

I already made sure that the box for audio playback under Aperture-Presets-Slideshows is checked.

Also I made sure that all the songs that I want to add to my slideshow can be played back using the "audio browser" in Aperture.

Switching from iPhoto, I also already found out, that it's not enough to choose the track you want, but that you also have to drag it to the filmstrip; which I've done.

The audio doesn't play back in the slideshow preview, as well as the "real" slideshow, as well as any exported movie.

Help of any kind would be appreciated. For now I can export my pictures to iPhoto and create the slideshows there... but in the long run, I want to get away from iPhoto. 🙂

Have you tried importing a song directly into Aperture and seeing if that will play while playing the slideshow in Aperture?

You can test this pretty easily by dragging a song out of iTunes to, your Desktop say, and then drag it from the Desktop into a Project in Aperture.

When you are choosing music for your slideshow, choose Aperture Audio to find the song in Aperture and drag it to the filmstrip as you would normally.

Let us know if that works. 🙂

Yeah, I didn't really think that was the problem but I wanted to list the steps I use to successfully get audio into a slide show and make sure you were following the same steps and seeing the same results.

So you get the green border around the slides with the audio track name in it? And I suppose you've tried it with different audio tracks and different themes. And there is nothing different about your setup? Audio works OK in other Apps, no problems anywhere else?

Well in cases like this where something so fundamental isn't working starting with the basic Aperture troubleshooting steps, http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3805 can't hurt. Do the permissions and repair skip the rebuild. Also try moving the preferences file to the desktop. Also try creating a new empty library impoer one or two images into it create a slideshow and see what happens. Finally if it is still not working create a new user log in as that user run Aperture and try it.

At that point if it still doesn't work you could try a re-install of Aperture.

good luck

One other thing you tried with both audio from iTunes and the built-in audio themes?

Yes, when I add music to the slideshow the green border around the slides appears.

Yes, I've tried different audio tracks from (probably) all possible sources.

Yes, audioworks OK in ALL other apps - especially in iPhoto.

Thanks for the troubleshooting link. I did repair the permissions and even attempted to repair the whole library. Didn't go through rebuild yet. Nothing changed.

Then I tried moving the pref file to the desktop and had to see that it doesn't exist! Even spotlight didn't find "com.apple.Aperture.plist"! Pref changes in Aperture are, however, saved somehow somewhere.

Next step: re-installing Aperture. I'll keep you posted.

OK, re-installing didn't fix it neither. I'd like to know where Aperture stores my prefs, though. Because after I deleted and re-installed Aperture, I wasn't even asked for my serial number...

I even tried the Microsoft-fix and rebooted my machine - no change at all. 😟

Now going to rebuild the entire library. I don't know why this should fix it... but who knows...

Well I'm tapped out. It appears by this last step that its a system/Aperture wide problem, not isolated to your account, other then that I'm at a loss.

One thing looking back at the previous posts you never listed your hardware/software setup. Don't know if it will help but if we know just what your running and running on something might pop out.

If you go into the test account you made to test this out is there a plist file in that users Library/Preferences folder? The missing plist file is very strange.

Also look to see if you have a Library/Application Support/Aperture folder.

Once last thing did audio in slideshows in Aperture ever work?

@Frank Caggiano I'm running a Mid-2010 MacBook Pro with the latest version of Snow Leopard. Aperture is reinstalled from the Trial-Download, then upgraded to 3.1.2 (as stated above: I was not asked to (re-)enter my serial number).

The test account also lacks the .plist file.

I have lots of stuff in /Library/Application Support/ but nothing to be seen of Aperture. I do have a folder called "Apple" but there's nothing Aperture-related in it neither.

@shuttersp33d Yes, that does work. That's what I meant when I wrote "audio browser". 🙂

You may know this already, but some people will sometimes look in the wrong Library folder. You have one at the System level and one at the User level. Make sure you're looking in the user level.

Macintosh HD > Users > [your "house" folder] > Library > Preferences>com.apple.Aperture.plist

Just thought I'd throw that out there. Same goes for the Application Support folder.
