Endless spinning wheel on shut down

If I boot up and do not initiate any software and then shut down, shut down occurs normally. If I initiate any software, I get a blue screen and the endless spinning wheel. I tried the repair disk and repair permissions from the startup disk, to no avail. This is something that began just recently, possibly with upgrading to 10.6.7 but I'm not sure. Safe boot makes no difference either. I am running on a 2.8 GHz, i7, quad core.

Thanks,

Jacob

lstnmysphr: Let me ask some things, as I'm still trying to debug the problem. Disable the Automator script first just to make sure.

1) Does this problem happen every time that you try to shut down or only on some occasions?

2) If it happens sometimes, if you boot up the system, and shut down without opening any program whatsoever, does it shut down properly?

3) If it happens sometimes, have you detected any program that after being run and closed would prevent your system from shutting down?

4) If you boot up the system and don't launch any program, is the file '/.com_kaspersky_iswift_journal' present? (You can check using the Terminal command 'ls -la /').

5) Do you have any Windows system installed on your system through Parallels

The last question is for otjacob as well, as that would help to see if we have that much in common.

Also, note that I have been posting on Kaspersky forums to see if they can help:

Could you try running a verbose shut down (as explained in the Kaspersky forums thread) and post a screenshot of your frozen shut down screen? Mine is this one:

I have for some time (months) been watching the Kapersky forums, but Kapersky seem pretty useless when it comes to trying to fix this. There was another thread on the forum which was also describing this problem (http://bit.ly/r7W8tv). Its not a Lion issue either, as I experienced this prior to upgrading.

1. Its a shutdown related to certain programs. For sure, one of them is Photoshop CS5.1 - there are others though, however I've not spent enough time figuring out which.

2. Yes.

3. As above.

4. Yes.

5. No, just fusion. But others that have this problem don't have either installed, so I don't think its that (they don't even have a bootcamp partition). The common link does seem likely to be Photoshop/Office 2011 based on what I have installed and others I am aware of. There may be something else though. I don't think its Crashplan as has been hinted for several months now as I, and others, don't have this installed.

Deleting com_kaspersky_iswift_journal makes no difference if it is deleted either prior to opening a trigger program (Photoshop) or if it is deleted after opening the trigger program. Either way it still causes a botched shutdown. I don't think this is the causative file. I have similarly tried deleting it on other machines and the problem is unresolved.

I'll take a look at the Shutdown log and see if anything comes up.

After trying several combinations of running programs and then shutting down the system, i watched perfect extremely fast shut down processes.

THE ONLY PROGRAM WHO, ONCE RUN WAS CAUSING THE ENDLESS SPINING WHEEL AT SHUTDOWN ... WAS.................., believe it or no.. iTUNES.

i will investigate a bit further the matter.

I think I am finding a pattern for the endless shutdown cycle in my MacBook Pro. It seems that the rpoblem lies down in Safari or Mission Control, the interesting part is this, both times this issue occured in Lion I had uncehecked the "resume" option at shutdown.

Hopefully Apple releases 10.7.1 really soon as these little Lion annoyances are driving me crazy...😠

lstnmysphr: Thanks for the useful information. You are right. Kaspersky is definitively related, but there are instances on which I experienced the botched shutdown even after having deleted /.com_kaspersky_iswift_journal

However, in my case, in the event that Kaspersky is not run at all, deleting /.com_kaspersky_iswift_journal fixes the problem.

I have been performing some extra tests, and have found out new information:

- The shutdown message about unsuccessfully trying to unmount /Network/Servers, /home and /net appears on some correct shut downs as well (I am not sure if it appears always, or only sometimes). So this is not indicative of what is causing the problem.

- The file /.com_kaspersky_iswift_journal sometimes appears on reboot even if Kaspersky autorun is disabled, and without running Kaspersky at all.

- There are some cases in which even after having manually deleted /.com_kaspersky_iswift_journal, the computer won't shut down. But definitively Kaspersky is a factor in the problem. I experienced the bug after performing these steps:

1) Reboot with Kaspersky autorun disabled

2) Delete /.com_kaspersky_iswift_journal

3) Run Kaspersky

4) Enable Kaspersky autorun

5) Check that /.com_kaspersky_iswift_journal doesn't exist

6) Run and close Photoshop

7) Rebooted and it hanged up.

This is being difficult to debug because rebooting is quite time consuming.

vea1083: If you never had Kaspersky installed I think you are experiencing a completely different Lion bug, that coincidentally results in the same problem. All the rest of the people in this thread are relating our problems to Kaspersky Antivirus 8.0.2.460 for Mac (either currently installed or previously installed and uninstalled).

Aug 11, 2011 6:31 AM in response to xdcdx

More information:

When Kaspersky 8.0.2.460 for Mac is installed, even if the antivirus program is not run (either by its own autorun, or manually), a Kaspersky kernel extension is loaded on Mac OS X bootup.

I believe this kernel extension is the cause of the problem. The extension is also responsible of creating /.com_kaspersky_iswift_journal on each reboot, and it also was preventing it from deleting the file using Finder.

After uninstalling Kaspersky 8.0.2.460 using the included uninstaller, the problem goes away and .com_kaspersky_iswift_journal is no longer created. After uninstall, the system has no problem rebooting and shutting down even after Photoshop CS5.1 is launched and closed.

Here you can find the Kaspersky bundle, it has both the installer and uninstaller.

So today this issue has been finally resolved (for me at least):

Until now I'd been running 8.0.6.863.c.d, which through the autoupdater was the latest version.

However browsing the Kaspersky site today I found a new version of the Endpoint Security 8.0 for mac (available here: http://support.kasperskyamericas.com/corporate/endpoint-security-mac-8-0). After upgrading I can cleanly shutdown every time, even after opening Illustrator, Photoshop etc etc.

FYI the update upgrades the software to version 8.0.7.906

Whilst this is only good if your running Endpoint version (not the home version) it shows that Kaspersky have been able to fix the bug and I assume it'll only be a matter of time until it hits the retail version - in fact on the 19th November a version was released to the App Store (8.1.1.65) so I don't know why this hasn't reached the autoupdater for those purchasing outside the App Store. Soon enough I guess?

Anyway, I just wanted to let you know a fix is around - whether or not, or when, you'll be able to get it I don't know.

Is this pproblem STILL not fixed some 3 years on? I run a 21.5 iMac, OS 10.6.8. As with MANY others who posted here but were seemingly IGNORED, my problem ONLY happens when iTunes is run. I have never used Kaspersky, no Office, none of the other supposed culprits. This problem ONLY exists on thIS ONE iMac, not on ANY of my airlines other 193 machines, runnning anything fromOs 10.3 server to 10.6.8 Snow Lepoard.. NONE of our units run Lion, i refuse. The very moment this ONE machine was installed, it has hung with BARE BONES Apple installed software, and ONLY when iTunes is initiated, as said. The problem MUST be in the hardware, as this is unique to this ONE machine. ALL other units which run an EXACT "clone" of this drive, (I have even used this exact boot drive in other units), this problem DOES NOT HAPPEN! So WHY can't Apple fix it when i take it to their store? THEY claim it is MY software that is the problem. I have spent over $10k on trips BACK to the USA, ( i bought this in California while there, but it is working at our location in Kiev, Ukraine) I can not justify this expense on a $1200 unit, Apple!! It is so absurd that after nearly 3 years you have IGNORED so many people withthe same problem, and ALWAYS seem to blame the USER.. not the hardware/firmware.

Dear Pinngwinn.

I gave it up and shoot my iMac down (21.5"/3.06 GHz Core 2 Duo - OS 10.7.5) if the spinning wheel occurs… After killing the lausy Kasperky software (on the parallel side) it became better. But time to time it spinns and some time not. I couldn't find out a cause. In the meantime I had to change my broken HD. But – of course – I needed my TimeMachine backup.

You'd THINK Apple would wish to kep a loyal BUSINESS user happy, after being with them since 1984, but no. I have an appintment on Thursday the 4th, in Dallas, where i have airline business that week, so i'll mishmash the fuel costs on my corp jet,, but i RESENT this bit with my warranty being up on SUNDAY, and after all this time they do NOTHING, and yet expect me to honor my contract to buy some 4000 new iPhone 5's for our airline employees and our several hundred ipads for "digital flight bags".. I don;t think so. If Apple can't find THIS moronic problem after 3 years, i cant TRUST my airline to them! SAD, i had hoped some one of the many skillful users might have found a solution, ( it used to be MY skill, but i am too busy recently to bother!)... I guess, as with all but ONE user i have seen comment here, and in other similar chains/threads. I will give up. but mY giving up will mean SUBSTANTAIL financial loss to Apple.. NOT that at their size even my measly million Euro contract wil matter to them. NAH.. I hate pc's but i guess we have little choice now, with xServes gone, and OS 10 server soon to follow, and now worthless BRAND NEW iMacs.. I bought this one in APRIL 2012..but i have read of others from 2011 on who suffer this on MAcBook PRos, and anything from OS 10.5 on.. Thank for your thoughts,, Rolf..

Dear pinngwinn

I am disapointed too - but not as much for switching to anything not bearing an  apple…

Having also some "experience" with PC from our University (ETH-Zürich), despite all the bugs to find on Apple products too – I would not change the brand. Using Macintosh's since X-mas 1986. Before we were serving mainframe computers, than Wang "desktop mills", CBM, IBM, HP, Apple IIc and finally the Mac, which was a revelation… lol

Back in this time  had wysiwyg - not Teletypers…like the other brands (e.g. IBM/MS).

Sure, Rolf, I understand what Apple ONCE HAD, that is the exact problem, they quit selling xServes, are stopping Os X server in any genuine form, ( i cant call Lion server REAL sever class software any longer! ) I would also prefer to not be FORCED to buy PC's but with Apple not sellng OR supporting any server hardware OR software,, I have no choice. Our business has gone thru 25 to 35% growth each of the last three years. I need NEW equipment, and the old macs, while always very stable, and trusty, can no longer be counted on. When i have new web designs, the OS 10.4 server/apache ( the last really stable and genuine server grade software from Apple) doesn't support Adobe CS6 code for the most part. I have always been a staunch supporter of the many things Apple had FIRST, but now Apple no longer HAS them at ALL, they are a "iDevice" organization only, OSX is headed to IOS doldums. Sorry, Apple is no longer MY computer company of choice. I'll be doing SERIOUS looking to make immediate replacement to the ( as stated) million Euro purchase we had planned from Apple this fall, while i am in Texas to return this iMac to Apple under warranty ( before it expires). SHORT of a serious discussion and proof Apple wants to FIX this glaring problem, OUR business with Apple is DONE, and THAT is a very sad thing for me.
