What happens to my websites created in iWeb when iCloud replaces IWeb as is rumoured... they will be lost?

Hello OT,

I was wondering if you could help me. I was currently in my 60 day free trial when Apple slammed the door shut on me. I signed up for MobileMe because my wife wanted to start a blog. She has been very very happy with iWeb and things were going real smooth. That is until Apple pulled the rug out from us.

Now we have just a few weeks left on our trial, with no option to extend. Everything she has worked on, all the hours she has put into this, are going up in smoke.

What is the best, easist option to change over to for blogging? I've read all that I can and always come back to Wordpress. But I just dont understand it. It is sooo incredibly technical. How can blogging be so hard, except with iWeb, which is now useless? The Wordpress help files are simply mind bogglingly technical.

I'm a life long Apple user, since System 6, but am beyond mad at what I have to go through now.

I use my MM space to host 3 different non-iWeb sites. It really looks like they will have to be moved. The main apps in the iCloud suite that will be offered for free are all I really need. I am not that interested in the music sync service since I only bought 2-3 tunes online out of my +10,000 tune iTunes library - I buy CDs. I am a fan of physical media - I have re-ripped my collection every time the tech goy better (mp3>AAC>LossLess) and every time drives got cheaper. The $99 a year spent on MM web hosting will now go to GoDaddy I guess. Looks like we have a year to move things...

I've seen Posterious recommended. I made a quick test blog with it to demonstrate embedding a 3rd party blog into an iWeb page: Embed a Site Within an iWeb Page. I have no other experience with 3rd party bloggers. We don't know if the iCloud will be able to host sites, etc. so I would look for a 3rd party hosting server like HostExcellence.com. But we just don't know at this time.

Using a non MMe server will require using a 3rd party blog if you want to have others comment on the blog.

Hey rattty

The best and most simple Apple/'app' style blog (and I've tried them all) is Tumblr... It has a cool iPhone app, still cool on the iPad, plus has some amazing templates and with loads of the fashion industry moving to it it can't be bad...

PS I run A Dr Who fan site thing and luckily made my blog on there linking to it from iWeb ... Have a look www.doctorwhoinfo.tumblr.com a see what you think 'simples'

Ciao!

Yes, I am very worried as well. I run my own wine education business through MobileMe, http://www.globalwinetour.com as well as the 209 page website for IWEG (http://www.iweg.org), the large professional wine school in Toronto. One big issue is secure logins for students. The current site hosted on Apple has secure logins for students at different levels. What the **** can I do if this service is eliminated? The app offers the secure option, but everything I hear is that hosting sites can't accommodate that part of the website!

This is very troublesome for me, and what sounds like many others hosting business related websites. I am a Mac fan, but if they eliminate this without telling us properly, my love for Mac is gonna deplete some!

If anyone knows of a host that provides the "secure login feature" on iWeb, please post the link here! I look forward to getting more information as soon as possible.

Cheers 🙂

Wordpress and Blogger also have the added bonus of being part of a larger community that is actually looking at reading blogs. I have a blogger account simply because iWeb made it easy to auto mirror information to it

Despite Apple taking a "wait till Fall" approach, all signs point to a complete abandonment of iWeb and web hosting, which is a crying shame because they did in fact, make the easiest, prettiest web development tool of all time, and Apple products are creative tools and should be used for web development.

I have Dreamweaver, but I hate using it for simple sites, just like I prefer Photoshop Elements to Photoshop for 90% of the things I need to do. Heck, instant Alpha in iWork pretty much gets the job done!

(in browser editors are IMHO pretty limited - not to mention an oxymoron and Facebook is NOT a replacement for my own websites thank you very much)

I would seriously look into migrating to a 3rd party hosting service like HostExcellence.com. The have excellent customer support, actually ear to ear!, very good prices (as low as $3.95/mo which includes a free domain name, unlimited bandwidth and disk space) and is quick. It also supports password protection for select pages or whole sites with multiple username and passwords.

And we can still use iWeb with it.

I am going to be migrating and hosting at GoDaddy. They offer more space (150GB), unlimited bandwidth, 500 email accounts, 25 MySQL databases and more for $6.99 a month - $15.12 less than MM. MM was much better integrated with the Mac of course, but I use other authoring tools anyway. It has been a long time since I used iWeb but I'm sure it can be made to point to any location for a site - or local files can be moved there.
